If there was any doubt that Heated Rivalry has become one of the biggest queer television phenomena in recent memory, the 2026 Canadian Screen Awards put that conversation to rest.
The hockey romance capped off a staggering weekend by winning 16 awards, sweeping every category in which it was nominated and cementing its place as the breakout hit of the year. Yet despite the show’s record-setting haul, much of the online conversation afterward centered on one person: Hudson Williams.
The actor, who stars as Shane Hollander in the adaptation of Rachel Reid’s beloved novel, picked up the award for Best Lead Performer in a Drama Series. Rather than deliver a standard thank-you speech, Williams leaned into the fandom that helped turn the series into a cultural force.
And yes, that meant talking about his famous “bottom eyes.”
A Speech Tailor-Made For The Fandom
Accepting the award, Williams immediately acknowledged that the honor felt incomplete without co-star Connor Storrie, who portrays rival-turned-lover Ilya Rozanov.
Storrie, an American actor, was ineligible for the award despite his central role in the series. Williams made sure to give him his flowers anyway.
“If I could cut this award down the middle I would because if these gay, yearning, little bottom eyes didn’t have a big sexy Russian to feast upon, my performance wouldn’t be as good. To the honorary Canadian Connor Storrie, I share this award with you,” Williams said.
The room erupted with laughter, while fans online quickly declared it one of the best acceptance speeches of the night.
The joke referenced a running social media obsession that has followed Williams since Heated Rivalry premiered last November. Across TikTok, X and Instagram, viewers have repeatedly joked about the actor’s expressive looks during the series’ emotional scenes, often describing them as “yearning bottom eyes.”
For longtime fans, the moment felt perfectly on brand. The actor has built a reputation for approaching the show’s popularity with humor, including previous viral interviews where he cheerfully engaged with some of the internet’s more unhinged reactions to the series.
Heated Rivalry’s Record-Breaking Weekend
Williams’ win was only one piece of a remarkable showing for the Crave drama.
Over two nights, Heated Rivalry collected 16 Canadian Screen Awards, completing a clean sweep of all its nominations. The series claimed top honors including Best Drama Series, Best Direction, Best Writing, Best Lead Performer and Best Supporting Performer for Sophie Nélisse.
The production also earned recognition across technical categories, taking home awards for photography, editing, sound, production design, costume design, visual effects, casting, original music and original song.
Adding to the momentum, the show won the Cogeco Fund Audience Choice Award, underscoring the passionate fan base that has helped propel it far beyond Canada.
The success is especially notable given the unusual awards-season situation surrounding the series. Despite becoming one of the most talked-about LGBTQ+ dramas in North America, Heated Rivalry remains ineligible for Emmy consideration because it did not originate as a U.S. co-production.
That technicality has done little to slow its momentum.
From Red Carpet To Winner’s Circle
Williams arrived at the ceremony looking every bit the leading man audiences have come to expect.
The actor continued his now-signature red-carpet aesthetic, wearing an espresso-colored Dolce & Gabbana tuxedo styled by Anastasia Walker. The look featured a deep neckline that has become something of a trademark for Williams during awards season appearances, from the Golden Globes to the Met Gala.
But while the fashion drew attention, it was his speech that became the evening’s most memorable moment.
After thanking Storrie, Williams also expressed gratitude to his parents and longtime partner, Katelyn Rose Larson, crediting them for supporting him throughout the whirlwind success of the past year.
What Comes Next
Fortunately for fans, the story is far from over.
Heated Rivalry has already been renewed for a second season, with production expected to begin in August 2026. The new installment is currently slated to premiere in April 2027.
Until then, viewers will likely continue replaying Williams’ acceptance speech, and turning “yearning bottom eyes” into an even bigger internet phenomenon.
After all, not every awards winner thanks a meme while accepting one of the highest honors of their career. Williams did, and the fandom loved him for it.
