Bob The Drag Queen Says Kandy Muse, Bianca Del Rio, and Monét X Change Would Dominate on ‘The Traitors’

0

The Traitors alum Bob The Drag Queen just nominated some of her fellow icons as part of the upcoming potential future casts.

Speaking with Gayety at the Queerties, the star stated that fellow drag queens like Kandy Muse, Monet X Change, and Bianca Del Rio would be smash additions to the reality series and potentially take home a win for queens alike.

Actor Alan Cumming recently revealed that he fought to ensure more LGBTQ+ representation on season 3 of The Traitors, the competition series airing on Peacock. Cumming, who served as the host of the show, explained that he lobbied for greater visibility of queer contestants, believing that it was crucial for LGBTQ+ individuals to be seen and represented in mainstream media.

The Traitors is a high-stakes reality competition where a group of contestants, divided into “Traitors” and “Faithfuls,” played a game of deception. The Traitors had to “murder” the Faithfuls—eliminating them from the game without being discovered. The Faithfuls, on the other hand, work together to identify and oust the Traitors. If the Faithfuls succeed in eliminating all the Traitors, they won a prize of up to $250,000. If any Traitors remained in the game at the end, they walked away with the money.

Season 3 of The Traitors featured a diverse group of contestants, including reality TV stars Tom Sandoval from Vanderpump Rules, Sam Asghari (former spouse of Britney Spears). Other notable participants included Chrishell Stause from Selling Sunset and Bob Harper from The Biggest Loser.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Cumming, shared his thoughts on why LGBTQ+ viewers could relate to the show’s dynamics. He pointed out that the central theme of The Traitors—hiding one’s true identity in order to survive—paralleled the experience of many queer individuals who had to conceal aspects of their identity in order to navigate societal challenges.

“Something about queerness is that you understand the concept of having to hide something about yourself, so that’s very similar to the experience of The Traitors,” Cumming explained. He emphasized that LGBTQ+ people often experienced a heightened sense of awareness about being different, which made the game’s theme of deception and concealment resonate on a personal level.

Cumming also spoke candidly about his efforts to bring more LGBTQ+ representation to the show. While the previous season of The Traitors had seen diversity in race and gender, Cumming felt that LGBTQ+ representation was lacking. He stressed the importance of visibility, explaining that the representation of queer and trans individuals in media was essential for fostering acceptance.

“It’s exposure therapy, it’s visibility. And you have to do it in every small way you can,” Cumming said. “We need to see that trans people are everywhere. They felt more comfortable to be visible in the last couple of decades. But historically, there’s always a backlash against change, and we were in the midst of a huge one right now.”

Cumming’s comments reflected his commitment to advocating for LGBTQ+ visibility in all areas of life. He further added, “My response to that is to push back and say, ‘No, we’re not going to hide. Here are those people.’ And if I had a chance to help do that by just saying to the producers of The Traitors, ‘We need to make sure there’s more queer and trans people on the show,’ I would.”

The need for greater visibility of LGBTQ+ people in reality television was especially pressing given the political climate at the time. In recent years, Pride celebrations had become a focal point for political discourse, with conservative opposition to LGBTQ+ rights growing louder. A report from the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) had highlighted a record spike in LGBTQ+ hate during Pride Month 2023, with incidents of hate and extremism becoming more prevalent across the country.

RuPaul’s Drag Race Live has been dazzling audiences in Las Vegas since 2020, and on Sunday, the concert residency reached a major milestone — its 1,000th performance. The show, held at the Flamingo Hotel’s Flamingo Showroom, is a nightly celebration of fierce performances, showcasing fan-favorite queens from MTV’s RuPaul’s Drag Race.

To commemorate the momentous occasion, a dazzling chorus of queens from various seasons of the iconic reality competition strutted their stuff on the pink carpet. Among the stars making an appearance was none otworher than RuPaul Charles, the Queen of Drag herself, who surprised the audience with a special guest appearance.

“RuPaul’s Drag Race Live” is a vibrant, immersive stage experience, where audiences can expect to see their favorite contestants performing original musical numbers, engaging in fierce lip-sync battles, and delivering sharp comedy sketches. The residency has become a Las Vegas staple, drawing fans from around the world for a show that celebrates the artistry, humor, and heart of drag.

Currently, the show features a rotating cast of performers, including Jaida Essence Hall, Morphine Love Dion, Ginger Minj, Asia O’Hara, and Plane Jane. At the 1,000th performance, the top six queens from RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 17 were also in attendance: Suzie Toot, Sam Star, Lana Ja’Rae, Jewels Sparkles, Onya Nurve, and Lexi Love. These queens also spent the weekend soaking in the Vegas sights, with photoshoots at iconic locations like the “Welcome to Las Vegas” sign and the High Roller outside the LINQ Hotel.

The queens even had a chance to interact with fans before the performance. On Friday evening, they joined a crowd at Gipsy Nightclub to watch the RuPaul’s Drag Race episode “Ross Mathews vs. the Ducks” with fans. The weekend’s festivities culminated in a lively after-party at Bugsy & Meyer’s Steakhouse, where influencers and members of the press mingled with the queens.

On Sunday night, a parade of other Drag Race stars graced the pink carpet, including DeJa Skye, Derrick Barry, Hot Chocolate, Jaymes Mansfield, Kahanna Montrese, Kennedy Davenport, Kylie Sonique Love, Mirage, and Yara Sofia, adding extra glam to the milestone celebration.

Co-directed by the 14-time Emmy-winning RuPaul and four-time Emmy-nominated choreographer Jamal Sims, the residency is produced by World of Wonder and Voss Events. Guests can purchase tickets for the electrifying show via Ticketmaster.

During the 1,000th performance, RuPaul shared heartfelt words with the audience. “We are so proud of this show. Our amazing cast of queens work so hard every show. I love them. It’s just such an honor to be on the Las Vegas Strip,” RuPaul said. “This has been a dream of all of ours for so many years.”

He also expressed his gratitude to the loyal fans who have returned to the show night after night. “Our audience is our secret weapon,” he added. “For that, I thank you with all my heart.”

A memorable moment occurred midway through the performance when RuPaul and host Ginger Minj led a comedic segment teaching the audience how to fake slap. After a playful back-and-forth, Ginger took the opportunity to fake slap RuPaul, declaring, “I’ve been waiting 10 years to do that!”

Before the big event, Drag Race producers Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato spoke with Gold Derby about the longevity of the residency. Bailey reflected on the challenges of launching a show in Las Vegas, a city known for its fierce competition. “Vegas is a hard town to get a show up and running,” he said. “It just took a while — and a couple Emmy Awards — to persuade this town that we could compete.”

Barbato emphasized that drag has always been mainstream entertainment, recalling how the art form was celebrated in the East Village long before it gained widespread recognition. “We always imagined it would go forever,” he said, speaking to the show’s enduring appeal.

Bailey also shared his perspective on Las Vegas as a city inextricably tied to drag culture. “Vegas is a city in drag,” he said. “Liberace kind of created Vegas, so Vegas in a way was manifested by, essentially, a drag queen.” He went on to address misconceptions about drag, emphasizing its universal appeal. “Drag is joyous, inventive, and accepting — it’s entertainment that can pull at the heartstrings.”

With its blend of humor, glamour, and heart, RuPaul’s Drag Race Live continues to bring the magic of drag to Las Vegas, proving that the art form is not just for a niche audience, but for everyone, no matter where they come from or who they love.

Patrick Schwarzenegger’s ‘White Lotus’ Co-Stars Thought He Was Going to ‘Throw Up’ During That Awkward Kissing Scene

0

Patrick Schwarzenegger’s uncomfortable moment in The White Lotus has certainly left an impression on viewers. The actor, who plays Saxon Ratliff in the hit HBO series, had a notably awkward on-screen kiss with his on-screen brother Lochlan, portrayed by Sam Nivola. This tense scene in the March 16 episode sparked curiosity among fans, and now, co-star Charlotte Le Bon has opened up about how the scene was filmed, revealing that Schwarzenegger himself was as uneasy as the audience seemed to be while watching.

In an interview with Vulture, Le Bon, who plays Greg Hunt’s new girlfriend, Chloe, explained that the kiss was not easy for Schwarzenegger. “Well obviously they’re not brothers by blood, so that made it easier,” she said, noting that the actors’ real-life relationship didn’t add to the discomfort. However, Le Bon admitted that Schwarzenegger was still hesitant about filming the intimate moment. “For Patrick, it was really difficult,” she said. “For Sam, he was kind of like, ‘It’s whatever, let’s just do it well one time and it will be over.’”

She went on to share that the emotional reaction seen on-screen was genuine. “Patrick’s reaction in the episode is his genuine reaction,” Le Bon revealed. “We all thought he was going to throw up. And Sam was like, ‘It’s fine, it’s just a kiss, calm down!’”

The scene in question, which involves Saxon and Lochlan sharing a kiss on Chloe’s yacht, is one of the more shocking and unsettling moments of the series. Chloe, who is looking for chaos and excitement during her stay at the White Lotus resort in Thailand, encourages the kiss after taking a mystery pill with her new friends. As the night progresses, Chloe’s reckless behavior culminates in the kiss, which fans are still trying to unpack.

Le Bon described her character Chloe as someone who fills the emptiness inside her with partying, chaos, and reckless behavior. “I think Chloe is deeply, deeply bored,” she said. “There’s a void inside of her. She fills that void with partying, sex, and chaos. This kiss between the two brothers for her is just pure entertainment, which is obviously really evil when you think about it.”

Chloe’s casual indifference to the situation highlights her detachment from any consequences, something Le Bon believes defines her character. “She’s not attached to life — I don’t know how to say it,” Le Bon explained. “She’s just there. She’s just incarnated in this body to live the experience of life and she doesn’t really care about the rest.”

The scene also shows Chloe locking lips with another character, Chelsea (Aimee Lou Wood), further emphasizing her disregard for social norms and relationships. For Chloe, everything is about living in the moment, no matter how damaging it might be to others around her.

While Chloe may seem to live a carefree, impulsive life, Le Bon suggested that her character likely never thinks about the consequences of her actions. “She’s the kind of person who’s never thought about that, or else she was just always able to manage her way through it,” Le Bon said. “She’s probably smart like that. It is really chaotic and dark.”

The tension between the characters of Saxon and Lochlan Ratliff has been building since the first episode of the season. Fans were quick to notice the odd dynamics between the two brothers, particularly after Lochlan seemed to fixate on Saxon when he was fully naked. This moment raised eyebrows, and Schwarzenegger hinted at the unusual nature of their relationship in an earlier interview with The Radio Times. “I think that the relationship with his brother — although it’s very odd and weird, which is what [creator] Mike [White] wanted — it’s still very loving at the same time,” Schwarzenegger said. “I mean, it’s just that Saxon has this false perception and idea of what he thinks makes a man and who he thinks he is, and he’s trying to groom his younger brother to become that.”

The intriguing and at times uncomfortable relationship between the two brothers is a key element of the show, adding layers to the plot’s complexity. The controversial kiss is sure to be a topic of discussion among viewers as The White Lotus continues to unravel its unpredictable storylines.

New episodes of The White Lotus air every Sunday at 9 p.m. ET/PT on HBO and Max.

Lil Nas X is making waves once again, and this time, he’s doing it in a big way. Beginning on March 10, the Grammy-winning rapper and singer has been dropping a new single each day, marking a bold and vibrant new chapter in his musical journey. His releases so far, including “DREAMBOY,” “BIG DUMMY!,” “SWISH,” and “RIGHT THERE,” are all part of a series that signals the beginning of an exciting new era—one heavily influenced by a Barbie-inspired aesthetic, with an emphasis on the color pink.

The latest release, “HOTBOX,” arrived on March 14, continuing the trend with yet another magenta-hued visual that ties into the colorful, playful vibe Lil Nas X has embraced for this phase. The track is a groovy pop-rap cut, exploring themes of sensuality and flirtation with lines like, “you be the carpet, I’ll be the vacuum.” The song draws clear influences from musical icons Pharrell and OutKast, combining a smooth, funky beat with Lil Nas X’s signature wit and charisma. Many fans have dubbed it the best single of the bunch, thanks to its catchy rhythm and cheeky lyrics.

This consistent use of the color and Barbie aesthetics feels like a statement in itself, pushing the boundaries of what we’ve seen from the artist so far.

Director Elias Talbot, who worked with Lil Nas X as a cinematographer on previous projects, shared his vision for the video with The FADER in an exclusive email interview. “I wanted to lean into the simplicity of a white backdrop and really allow for his personality to shine through and not be overshadowed,” Talbot explained. “Originally Montero was inspired by these pink elements, and I was able to create a narrative based on that inspiration.”

The video’s location is just as unique as the visuals. Talbot revealed that the team chose Vilnius, Lithuania, as the shoot location. “We scoured for the best location to shoot this piece, and we landed on Vilnius… of all places!” Talbot said. “The crew and whole team there was beyond phenomenal. I’ve shot all over the world, and I was blown away by the professionalism and artistry that this whole crew brought to our vision.” It’s clear that the location and its creative execution played a big part in bringing this fun, quirky vision to life.

While Lil Nas X has yet to announce a full project, the daily singles suggest that something bigger may be on the horizon. Fans are eagerly anticipating the possibility of a full-length album or perhaps an EP, with the last few days marking an exciting and visually striking introduction to this new era of his music. Bowen Yang Admits Lady Gaga’s Music Helped Him Come out After Conversion Therapy

Lady Gaga sparked a whirlwind of excitement in the LGBTQ+ community last week with the release of her highly anticipated seventh album, Mayhem. However, during a recent interview with Bowen Yang and Matt Rogers on their popular podcast Las Culturistas, the pop icon had an unexpected emotional moment that revealed her true feelings about the intense attention surrounding her.

The interview took a dramatic turn toward the end when Gaga was asked to participate in the podcast’s signature game, “I Don’t Think So Honey,” where guests have 60 seconds to rant about something in pop culture. But Gaga wasn’t quite prepared for the pressure of ranting on command.

“Basically, I don’t think so, honey, that you guys are putting me on the spot to do this,” she began, expressing her discomfort. “I hate ranting. I hate confronting people, I feel super uncomfortable.”

As the hosts laughed, trying to get her to engage in the game, Gaga opened up about her desire to avoid confrontation altogether. “I would love to just, like, go on stage and sing and change my outfits and pick my wigs and write songs and make albums and go on tours. But I do not want to rant about anything.”

With the clock ticking down and the pressure mounting, Gaga became visibly emotional, admitting that being put on the spot was overwhelming. “I’m not just gonna do whatever you say, whenever you ask me to do it,” she said, clearly frustrated. “When you tell me to do things, it makes me wanna cry! It makes me insane!”

Yang, realizing the moment had taken an emotional turn, quickly responded, “We shouldn’t have done this,” leading to a lighthearted end to the segment.

While the game didn’t go as planned, there was no hard feelings between Gaga and the Las Culturistas hosts. In a more vulnerable moment, Yang shared how Gaga’s anthem “Born This Way” helped him come to terms with his own identity during his college years, cementing the powerful bond between the singer and her LGBTQ+ fans.

In another humorous moment from the interview, Yang stumbled over his words while discussing Gaga’s incredible talents, inadvertently calling her a “b*tch.” After quickly apologizing, Gaga, ever the professional, responded with her signature coolness: “Don’t apologize. Thank you!”

Gaga also reflected on her long-time relationship with the LGBTQ+ community, recalling her high school years when she found her first gay friends. “I went to an all-girls school, which means that when school was over, I used to walk eight blocks away to the boys’ school,” she shared. “They weren’t out yet, but we were friends, and we would do the musicals together, and I found my people.”

As Gaga’s career progressed, she grew even more connected to the LGBTQ+ community. “I was like, ‘Oh, this is the community that loved me when I was a child, and this is the community that I’m meant to be a part of now,'” she said, underscoring the deep, symbiotic relationship that has been central to her success.

Gaga also teased some behind-the-scenes moments from the making of Mayhem, including a song she almost didn’t include on the album, and spoke about the future of her music and life with her fiancé.

Fans can watch the full interview on Las Culturistas, where Gaga opens up about her experiences, her journey with her LGBTQ+ fanbase, and her emotional responses to the overwhelming demands of fame.

Benito Skinner Explores College Life and Identity in New Dramedy ‘Overcompensating’ for Prime Video

0

Benito Skinner, widely recognized for his viral internet persona as Benny Drama, is stepping into the world of television with his new semi-autobiographical comedy series, Overcompensating. In an a first look, Skinner, who created, wrote, and executive produced the series, shares a story of self-discovery, friendship, and the complexities of college life through the eyes of his character, Benny.

The series is set in a college environment and follows Benny, a closeted former football player and homecoming king, as he navigates his way through the ups and downs of student life. The show dives deep into the trials of trying to fit into different social circles, all while struggling with his own identity. Benny forms an unexpected and fast friendship with Carmen, a fellow student played by Wally Baram, who is an outsider desperately trying to fit in at any cost. Together, they tackle the messiness of college life, with its “horrible hookups, flavored vodka, and fake IDs,” all while attempting to find themselves in the process.

According to Skinner, Overcompensating is more than just a comedy about college—it is a dramedy that delves into the lengths people go to overcompensate for their insecurities while on the path of self-discovery. “I think we all have moments in our lives where we try to pretend to be someone we’re not, especially in college,” Skinner said. “This series explores the tension between the image we want to project and the person we’re really trying to figure out how to be.”

Skinner portrays Benny in the series, and his personal experiences as a college student are reflected in the character. Benny’s journey of navigating the complexities of identity and acceptance will resonate with viewers who have experienced the pressures of fitting into certain social molds or reconciling their public persona with their true selves.

The show is also notable for its star-studded cast, which includes both seasoned actors and rising talents. Overcompensating features Kyle MacLachlan and Connie Britton as Benny’s on-screen parents, adding star power to the show’s dynamic. Both actors, known for their iconic roles in Twin Peaks and Friday Night Lights, respectively, bring depth and nuance to their roles. MacLachlan’s character, John, and Britton’s character, Kathryn, serve as loving yet flawed figures in Benny’s life who offer guidance, but also embody the pressures and expectations that many college students feel from their families.

Rish Shah, a series regular, plays Benny’s best friend, Miles, who helps him navigate the chaotic world of college. Miles and Benny’s friendship is at the heart of the show, with both characters offering each other support as they try to figure out who they are in the face of societal expectations. The bond between Benny and Carmen, as well as Benny’s relationship with his older sister (played by Mary Beth Barone of Black Mirror), will also be central to the show’s exploration of identity and self-acceptance.

Joining the ensemble cast in guest roles are Kaia Gerber, Owen Thiele, and Grammy-winning pop star Charli XCX, who also serves as the executive music producer for the series. Charli XCX’s involvement adds a unique layer to the project, bringing her pop expertise to the music-driven moments within Overcompensating. As an executive music producer, she is helping to shape the show’s musical landscape and elevate the emotional beats with a carefully curated soundtrack that speaks to the themes of the show.

The collaboration between Skinner and Charli XCX isn’t the only exciting partnership for the project. Overcompensating is being produced by A24, a production company known for its work on critically acclaimed projects such as Lady Bird and Euphoria. In addition, Jonah Hill serves as an executive producer through his production company, Strong Baby, further elevating the show’s pedigree.

Skinner’s rise to fame through his Benny Drama persona on social media has allowed him to develop a unique voice in the entertainment industry. His viral celebrity impressions and satirical skits, which often parody popular culture and Hollywood figures, garnered widespread attention and caught the eye of the stars he mimicked. Skinner’s collaborations with A-list celebrities, such as Drew Barrymore, Kourtney Kardashian, and Jennifer Aniston, have made him a household name. With Overcompensating, Skinner transitions from internet sensation to a full-fledged television creator, drawing from his own experiences while creating an entertaining narrative about self-exploration and the awkwardness of adolescence.

Skinner has expressed excitement about bringing Overcompensating to a wider audience, stating, “It’s a dream come true to be able to create a show that combines my love for humor, personal storytelling, and the awkwardness of growing up. College is such a weird, confusing time, and I’m excited to share a piece of that experience with people.”

All episodes of Overcompensating are set to drop on Prime Video on May 15, giving audiences the chance to binge-watch the entire season in one go. Fans can expect a mix of humor, heart, and authentic moments that tackle real-life issues with a comedic lens. The show promises to explore the absurdity of college culture while simultaneously offering a relatable, heartfelt exploration of identity and self-acceptance.

With its unique blend of comedy, drama, and musical elements, Overcompensating is shaping up to be a must-watch for fans of Skinner’s work, as well as those who enjoy coming-of-age stories with an edgy twist. The series is sure to resonate with anyone who has ever struggled with fitting in, overcompensated in the face of insecurity, or tried to find themselves amidst the chaos of college life.

As the countdown to its May release begins, Overcompensating is already generating buzz as one of the most anticipated shows of 2025. With a talented cast, a unique premise, and a creative team led by Benito Skinner, the series is poised to be a breakout hit when it premieres on Prime Video.

Wendy Williams Calls Into ‘The View’ Telling Her Legal Guardian to ‘Get Off My Neck’

0

Television and radio personality Wendy Williams made a strong statement on March 14 during a phone appearance on The View, urging both her guardian, Sabrina Morrissey, and the judge who declared her “legally incapacitated” to “get off my neck.” Williams also declared, “I need a new guardian,” in what marks her most direct public plea to end her court-appointed guardianship, which she entered in 2022.

Williams’ guardianship has been a subject of controversy, and her recent remarks come amid reports of her being moved from an assisted living facility to a hospital earlier this month. During the View segment, Williams explained that her hospitalization was not a sign of any further cognitive decline, but rather, a need for medical attention.

“I was having a little agita,” she told the show’s hosts, referring to her brief hospitalization. “And you know, to go to the hospital… look, where I live, at that memory unit on this floor, you know, I just needed a breath of fresh air. I needed to see the doctors. So that’s why I went to the hospital.”

Williams’ words on The View highlighted her frustration with the treatment she has received under her guardianship. She made it clear that she does not agree with the diagnosis of “incapacitation” and insists that she is fully aware of her condition. “It was my choice to get an independent evaluation on my incapacitation, which I don’t have it. How dare they say I have incapacitation? I do not,” Williams said.

Her criticisms extend to the environment she’s currently living in, describing it as restrictive and not conducive to her well-being. “I am not permitted to do anything but stay on this floor. The memory unit floor, where the people are 90 and 80 and 70… why am I here? You know what I’m saying? Where people don’t remember anything. So I stay in the bedroom the majority of the time. I never go out to eat. I stay in the bedroom,” Williams explained.

Sunny Hostin, a co-host of The View, read a statement from Williams’ guardian’s lawyer, which defended the arrangement. The statement pointed out that the guardianship was issued by a judge after Williams was diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia (FTD), a condition that can affect behavior and cognitive abilities. The lawyer also noted that Williams was receiving excellent medical care and that she had not been kept from her family.

In response, Williams fired back during the broadcast, telling her critics, “I need them to get off my neck.”

This marked the highest-profile return for Williams to the television spotlight since the conclusion of her long-running talk show, The Wendy Williams Show, in June 2022. The show had been a staple of daytime television since its debut in 2008, but Williams stepped away from hosting in 2021 after taking a leave of absence for medical reasons. Williams was dealing with complications from lymphedema and Graves’ disease at the time, both of which affected her health and ultimately led to her exit from the show.

Williams’ health struggles continued into 2024 when her team disclosed that she had been diagnosed with aphasia and FTD. Aphasia is a language disorder that impairs the ability to communicate, while frontotemporal dementia is a degenerative condition that affects personality, behavior, and cognitive function.

The court-appointed guardianship began in 2022, following concerns over Williams’ health. However, she has publicly opposed the arrangement for some time. In a January interview on The Breakfast Club, Williams said, “I feel I’m in a prison,” and described her guardian, Sabrina E. Morrissey, as “that person that you talk about who is holding me hostage.”

Earlier this week, reports surfaced that Williams had been transferred from her assisted living facility to a hospital on March 10. During a separate interview with Good Day New York, Williams denied claims that she was cognitively impaired, stating that she had passed mental competency tests with “flying colors.” Her caretaker, Gina Monterrosa, supported Williams’ assertion, saying that Williams had been “deemed she is not incapacitated.”

The ongoing saga surrounding Wendy Williams has drawn significant attention, particularly as it raises important questions about autonomy, guardianship, and the management of medical conditions. Williams’ outspokenness about her guardianship has sparked debate, with some expressing concern over her wellbeing, while others believe she should have more control over her own life and decisions.

As of now, it remains unclear what steps Williams will take next in her fight to regain control over her affairs. The issue of her guardianship is expected to continue to be a subject of legal scrutiny, as Williams seeks to regain her independence while navigating the challenges posed by her health conditions.

In the meantime, Williams’ fans and the public continue to watch closely as she takes steps to challenge the arrangement that has kept her under the supervision of a court-appointed guardian for the past few years. Whether she will succeed in regaining her autonomy remains to be seen, but her recent comments suggest she is determined to assert her rights and seek a change in her current circumstances.

Sarah McBride Claps Back at GOP Critics: ‘I Live Rent Free in Their Minds’

Delaware Congresswoman Sarah McBride, the first openly transgender member of Congress, criticized Republican lawmakers for fixating on her gender identity rather than addressing critical policy issues affecting Americans. McBride’s remarks came during the Democrats’ annual retreat in Leesburg, Virginia, on Wednesday.

“I appear to live rent-free in the minds of some of my Republican colleagues,” McBride said, referencing ongoing attacks from GOP members who have continually focused on her identity rather than substantive legislation.

The comments followed an incident just days prior when Rep. Keith Self, a Texas Republican and chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee’s subpanel on Europe, misgendered McBride multiple times during a hearing. Self referred to her as “Mister McBride,” prompting an immediate response from Rep. Bill Keating, the ranking Democrat on the subcommittee, who demanded a correction. Self, however, adjourned the hearing instead of apologizing.

Despite the ongoing attacks, McBride remained steadfast in her criticism of the GOP’s preoccupation with culture war issues. “I wish that they would spend even a fraction of the time that they spend thinking about me, thinking about how to lower the costs for American families,” McBride said. “I wish they would spend a fraction of the time that they spend thinking about me, figuring out how to make government actually work better, rather than making it work worse in order to prove that government can’t work.”

The incident is the latest in a series of attacks from Republican lawmakers against McBride since she took office in January. Earlier this year, House Speaker Mike Johnson, a Louisiana Republican, enacted a policy restricting transgender individuals from using restrooms that align with their gender identity in the Capitol. The move sparked national outrage and was widely condemned by LGBTQ+ advocates as an attempt to marginalize transgender Americans.

The bathroom ban led to another controversial moment when Reps. Lauren Boebert of Colorado and Nancy Mace of South Carolina confronted a cisgender woman in the Capitol restroom, mistakenly believing her to be McBride. The situation highlighted the potential dangers of the policy and prompted further criticism from LGBTQ+ groups.

“The Republican Party is obsessed with culture war issues,” McBride said, expressing frustration with the GOP’s ongoing focus on divisive topics. “It is weird, and it is bizarre. And the American people deserve serious legislators, serious elected officials who are focused on bringing people together to deliver real results for the American people. Not to play games, and not to engage in schoolyard taunts.”

McBride also responded directly to GOP complaints about decorum. “We will not take a lecture on decorum from a party that incited an insurrection,” she stated, referencing the January 6 Capitol attack led by pro-Trump rioters.

Her remarks underscore the growing tension between the Democratic and Republican parties, particularly in the aftermath of the 2020 election and the ongoing culture wars surrounding LGBTQ+ rights. As McBride continues her term, she has become a target of Republican rhetoric, but her ability to rise above the personal attacks has made her a strong voice for both transgender rights and progressive policies in Congress.
