I, too, was shocked to learn that we are not only getting a new sapphic rom-com, but one starring none other than Rebecca Ferguson and Greta Lee. And yes, I can assure you, it is real.
The two actors are set to lead Honeymoon / Funeral, a new queer romantic comedy from director Nahnatchka Khan, according to Deadline. The film has reportedly been shooting in London in recent weeks, which means a release date is not too far off.
The premise is a classic romance trope of accidental connection. Ferguson and Lee will play two women who meet while flying from Los Angeles to London. One is traveling alone on what should have been her honeymoon after her girlfriend leaves her at the altar. The other is returning home for her mother’s funeral.
Rather than going their separate ways after landing, the strangers end up spending the week together. Further plot details remain under wraps, including exactly how romantic their time in London becomes, but I think we can expect plenty of room for sparks to fly.
Who Is Behind Honeymoon / Funeral?
Khan is directing the movie from a screenplay by Julia Bicknell. Khan previously directed the Netflix romantic comedy Always Be My Maybe and the time-travel slasher Totally Killer. Bicknell’s television credits include Yellowjackets, The Midnight Club, The Haunting of Bly Manor and 13 Reasons Why.
The two lead actors recently appeared together in A House of Dynamite, a political thriller about the race to stop a nuclear missile detected heading toward Chicago. Now, they’re reuniting onscreen and trading the threat of nuclear disaster for a sapphic romance.
Ferguson is probably best known for playing Lady Jessica in the Dune films and fan-favorite spy Ilsa Faust in the Mission: Impossible franchise. She also stars in and executive produces Apple TV’s sci-fi series Silo.
Lee, meanwhile, earned widespread acclaim for her heartbreaking performance as Nora in Past Lives. Audiences may also recognize her as the effortlessly cool Maxine in Russian Doll or from her roles in The Morning Show and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.
Jennifer Carreras, Khan and Bicknell are producing the film through Khan and Carreras’ Fierce Baby banner. MRC is financing and overseeing production, while FilmNation is launching international sales ahead of the Toronto International Film Festival market.
No release date has been announced for Honeymoon / Funeral.
