There are plenty of places to stay in wine country, but few leave an impression that lingers long after checkout. Staying at The Charles Napa Valley felt less like a hotel visit and more like being welcomed into someone’s thoughtfully curated home, one where every detail is intentional, but nothing feels overdone.

From the moment we arrived, that feeling was immediate. We were greeted by the innkeeper, Runie, whose warmth set the tone for the entire stay. Hospitality can sometimes feel scripted; here, it felt natural. Within minutes, we were ushered into the main living space where an evening spread was already in full swing.

A Happy Hour Worth Lingering Over

Picture this: a table dressed with wine, cheeses, and small bites that quietly demand your attention. It wasn’t just a quick pour-and-go situation, it was an invitation to slow down. Chocolate-covered strawberries sat alongside a charcuterie board that felt carefully assembled rather than obligatory. And the wine? Exactly what you’d hope for in Napa.

We dropped our bags upstairs and came right back down, because honestly, why wouldn’t you?

This kind of social hour is part of what defines The Charles brand. The property builds on the success of its sister location, The Charles Pacific Grove, which has already carved out a reputation for combining design with an inclusive, guest-first experience. That same philosophy carries through here, right in the heart of Napa.

Rooms That Invite You to Unplug

After settling in, we took a moment upstairs to reset, and that’s when the room really revealed itself. Rich wood furnishings grounded the space, while natural light poured into a spacious bathroom that felt like a quiet retreat of its own. It struck a balance between polished and comfortable, never tipping too far in either direction.

There’s something about a room that makes you want to stay in just a little longer, even when you have plans. This was one of those rooms.

A Property With Stories to Tell

Later, Runie walked me through the grounds, offering a closer look at what makes the property special. Originally a 1906 mansion built by Napa craftsman E.W. Doughty, the space carries its history well, blending its past with a refreshed point of view shaped by designer Charles Gruwell.

Outside, the energy shifts. Fire pits flicker on the patio, a small waterfall hums in the background, and there are pockets of space designed for doing absolutely nothing, which, in Napa, might be the best activity of all. There’s also the convenience factor: you’re just minutes from downtown, where tasting rooms, coffee spots, and boutique shops are all within reach.

Mornings That Feel Like a Throwback

If the evenings are about unwinding, the mornings are about ease. Walking downstairs, you’re greeted by the smell of fresh waffles, the kind that instantly taps into something nostalgic. Guests gather in the dining area, and before long, plates of food and juices start making their way to the table.

What stands out isn’t just the meal, it’s the atmosphere. Conversations spark naturally. Travelers swap stories. There’s a sense that everyone is in on the same little secret: this place just works.

More Than a Stay

At its core, The Charles isn’t just about aesthetics or location, it’s about how people are treated the moment they walk through the door. That commitment starts behind the scenes and carries through every guest interaction. Hotel partner Ryan MacCarrigan has been intentional about building a framework that prioritizes inclusivity from day one.

“From the beginning, we made a deliberate investment in inclusive hospitality training for staff and scalable, replicable hotel operations,” MacCarrigan said. “Our proprietary C.H.A.R.L.E.S. Method provides a disciplined blueprint for growth.”

That structure isn’t just corporate language, you can feel it in real time. Whether it’s the ease of conversation at breakfast or the genuine warmth from staff, there’s a sense that everyone is welcome here, no caveats attached. For LGBTQ+ travelers especially, that kind of environment isn’t just appreciated, it’s essential.

MacCarrigan emphasized that the goal goes beyond a single stay. “Our main goal is to bring style and a safe, inclusive hospitality experience to the global traveler,” he said. “We want it to become a movement in the hospitality industry, inspiring others to create artfully designed hotels that celebrate diversity, equality, and inclusion.”

It’s a vision that feels aligned with the experience itself: thoughtful, open, and rooted in making sure every guest feels like they belong.

By the end of the stay, one thing became clear, The Charles isn’t just where you sleep between tastings. It becomes your anchor. The place you look forward to returning to after a full day out. And in a destination filled with options, that’s what sets it apart.
