British pop star Mimi Webb is no stranger to powerhouse ballads and glittery, feel-good anthems—but with “Mind Reader,” a standout track from her new album Confessions, she’s serving something especially euphoric. The fan-favorite bop, which dropped alongside the rest of the project last month, features none other than pop hitmaker Meghan Trainor, in a collaboration that feels as natural as it is electric.

In a recent exclusive interview with Gayety, Webb opened up about how the track came together and the supportive, girl-powered environment that made it possible.

Webb, beaming with excitement, explained that the collaboration was born from more than just musical chemistry, instead, it was rooted in label camaraderie and a shared sense of sisterhood.

“We’re actually all on the same label,” Webb said, referring to Epic Records. “It’s kind of like a little girl group behind the scenes. We all know each other, we all work with the same team. It honestly felt like a little family.”

That familial feeling played a big role in the track’s genesis. Webb revealed that she and Trainor had both been spending time in Los Angeles around the same period, often crossing similar paths. The idea to collaborate came from mutual enthusiasm and encouragement from their teams.

“Meghan’s team—and mine too—were like, ‘We want to make this happen. Meghan would love to work with you,’” Webb recalled. “And I was like, ‘Oh my gosh. Me? Really?’ It was such a supportive moment. There aren’t many girls on our label, so it felt really special.”

When the day finally came to hit the studio together, Webb says Trainor didn’t just show up—she took charge.

“She was so prepared. She walked in like a mastermind,” Webb said, clearly still in awe. “She comped all my vocals—she’s amazing at vocal comping—and was literally on her laptop directing me. ‘Do that bit again,’ she’d say, and I’d be like, ‘Oh my God, is this going to be approved by Meghan Trainor?!’”

It wasn’t just a first-time collaboration for Webb—it was her first time recording vocals with another artist present in the room.

“I’d never done a session with another artist before, let alone sung vocals in front of one,” she admitted.

Originally written for Webb’s project alone, the song quickly evolved into something that felt bigger—something worth sharing. “Meghan loved the song so much,” Webb said. “And I got to a point where I thought, ‘I can’t do this without her.’ It just wouldn’t feel right. It felt like a moment we both really wanted to share.”

Webb’s sophomore album, Confessions, explores emotional highs and lows, navigating fame, heartbreak, and self-discovery. “Mind Reader” stands out for its shimmering production and feel-good energy, pairing perfectly with both Webb’s signature vocals and Trainor’s vibrant pop sensibility.

And if their behind-the-scenes bond is any indication, this might not be the last time we see the two teaming up.

“It was just so lovely. Everyone was so supportive, and we really vibed,” Webb said. “The energy in that room—honestly, I’ll never forget it.”
