Nearly two years after the curtain fell on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Ellen DeGeneres stepped back into the spotlight. At her recent stand-up gig at the Largo in Los Angeles, DeGeneres didn’t shy away from the controversies that nudged her off the daytime TV throne. 

“Oh yeah, I got kicked out of show business,” she declared, her tone dripping with irony. “There’s no mean people in show business.”

Controversy and Comebacks

Back in 2020, a storm brewed over The Ellen DeGeneres Show when allegations of a toxic workplace surfaced. An article by BuzzFeed shed light on accusations from 11 anonymous staff members who cited “racism, fear, and intimidation.” While the blame was primarily pinned on executive producers, the damage to DeGeneres’s reputation was done. A Twitter thread by comedian Kevin T. Porter that year labeled her as “notoriously one of the meanest people alive,” inviting others to share similar stories.

Despite her surprise at these accusations, DeGeneres apologized to her team, and three executive producers were dismissed following an internal investigation. Critics saw this as a belated effort to salvage her public image amidst mounting discontent.

The Show Must Go On

The talk show wrapped up in May 2022, marking a significant pause in DeGeneres’s career. Reflecting on her setbacks during her stand-up show, she quipped, “For those of you keeping score, this is the second time I’ve been kicked out of show business… Eventually they’re going to kick me out for a third time because I’m mean, old, and gay.”

Post-show, DeGeneres engaged in a heartfelt Q&A with the audience, expressing the emotional toll of losing her talk show. “This was like, ‘What is going on?’ It was so hurtful. I couldn’t gain perspective. I couldn’t do anything to make myself understand that it wasn’t personal,” she shared.

“We can explore that, and it won’t necessarily affect if I’m exploring something with someone else, you know?” Jauregui added, highlighting the flexible nature of her current relationship dynamic.

She playfully confessed that a special someone could completely change her outlook. “I’m like, ‘Forget it. Everybody leave. I’m getting married.’ I’m such a Cancer,” she laughed.

In a candid moment, Jauregui also touched on her sexual identity, suggesting she might be demisexual—a person who needs a deep emotional connection to feel sexual attraction. “I went through the phase of trying to just sleep with people, and I hated it. “In order for me to be really turned on and enjoy sex, I need to know that you care about me as a human being. I can’t be transactional for you,” she concluded.

Davies, renowned for his storytelling prowess, shared with Variety that Gatwa’s Doctor won’t shy away from embracing his queer identity. This isn’t about putting a label on the Doctor’s sexuality but rather letting his innate “lightness and joy” shine, something Davies feels resonates with queer energy. 

He cheekily noted that past incarnations of the Time Lord “weren’t exactly the straightest men,” suggesting a rich subtext has always been woven into the fabric of the character.

As the first out queer actor to take on the role, Gatwa’s casting alone is a bold statement. The inclusion of queer themes won’t dominate the plot but expect subtle nods and explorations throughout the series. Davies made it clear: “We’re not delivering a neutered Doctor.”

Davies has always pushed the envelope, and casting Gatwa was no exception. The search for the new Doctor was broad, including men, women, Black, white, non-binary actors, and those who keep their sexuality private. Davies thrives on challenging norms: “It’s very hard for anyone to stop me doing these things… you’d have to be a pretty brave executive to say: ‘Don’t go there’ to me.”

This casting choice follows in the footsteps of Jodie Whittaker, the first female Doctor, who faced challenges from fans clinging to traditional portrayals. Gatwa has a fierce message for detractors: true fans understand that regeneration and change are at the heart of Doctor Who. “You’ve not been watching,” he asserts, if you think the Doctor should fit a single mold.

“I didn’t [know I was coming out], but I kinda thought, wasn’t it obvious?” she told the reporter. “I didn’t realize people didn’t know.”

She acknowledged the mixed feelings it provoked. “I’m lucky enough to be in a time when I’m able to say something like that and things go OK for me,” she said, acknowledging that not everyone’s experience with such revelations is as forgiving.

The singer emphasized the importance of self-identity and the pressure to conform to labels. “Nobody should be pressured into being one thing or the other, and I think that there’s a lot of wanting labels all over the place,” Eilish argued. Everyone say “hi” to Jack Maddox (AKA our forever crush Jonathan Bailey).

It’s real! Jonathan Bailey, the Bridgerton star and upcoming Wicked heartthrob, has joined the cast of Heartstopper for season 3. According to Netflix, Bailey is joining for a cameo appearance as Jack Maddox, Charlie’s Instagram-famous crush.

The Heartstopper Family Keeps on Growing

Though fans had pieced together clues about Bailey’s involvement, Netflix finally confirmed it, ending the speculation. However, the dreamy actor is not the only one joining the Heartstopper fam.

‘I am incredibly excited to be welcoming three new cast members to the Heartstopper family,” shared author Alice Oseman.

In addition to Bailey, Eddie Marsan (Back to Black, Ray Donovan) and Hayley Atwell (Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One and Captain America: The First Avenger) will be guest starring.

“Hayley Atwell joins the Nelson family as Nick’s Aunt Diane, who takes Nick on a summer holiday to Menorca and has some tough advice to impart about his relationship. Eddie Marsan will be portraying a beloved character from the graphic novels: Geoff, Charlie’s wise and straight-talking therapist.”

Atwell’s entrance is bittersweet, as fans mourn Olivia Colman’s exit as Nick’s mom. Fortunately, Nick won’t be alone this season! His aunt will be there to help navigate him through tough times in his relationship with Charlie.

“It was an absolute joy to see Hayley, Eddie, and Jonathan’s talent alongside our existing cast, and I can’t wait for the Heartstopper fans to meet these new characters,” Oseman concluded.

In this interview with Caitlynn McDaniel from Gayety, stars Anne Hathaway and Nicholas Galitzine, alongside director Michael Showalter, shed light on the charming dynamics and behind-the-scenes magic of their latest romantic drama, The Idea of You.

The film, set to premiere on Prime Video, promises a journey of love, music, and self-discovery, centered around a 40-year-old single mom and a young pop star.

Unveiling the Magic Behind the Scenes

Showalter is enthusiastic about the unique storyline, saying, “I’m just really interested in these characters as people.” He elaborates on the relationship between Solène, played by Hathaway, and Hayes, portrayed by Galitzine, emphasizing these characters’ depth and challenges. 

“I hope that women and men too, see Solèn as a powerful woman who’s making her own decisions,” Showalter added. “And she’s a mom, but she’s also a sexual being and she’s got hopes and dreams and all of those things, and she’s just making her own decisions for herself. And I think she’s a really powerful character and a great role model.”

Showalter raved about recreating the popular desert festival but revealed they actually filmed it during the winter. 

“You can even see there’s steam or whatever coming out of their mouths. We shot the movie in late November/December, so we’re actually in Atlanta when we were shooting that.”

A Spark On and Off Screen

The chemistry between Hathaway and Galitzine is palpable, both on-screen and off. 

“It’s funny. We knew that they were absolutely perfect for each other,” Showalter said of the casting. “Just every day just coming into set, working together, having fun, seeing them create their characters and sort of become these two people and go on this journey for me. It was awesome.”

On-screen, their chemistry is undeniable, and off-screen, they bonded charmingly through texts.

Their first bonding moment, as recounted by Hathaway, involved exchanging get-to-know-you questions, which quickly evolved into voice memos due to the intensity of their exchanges. This not only built their characters’ connection but also fostered a genuine rapport between the actors.

Oh, and Nicholas is Greek, in case anyone did not know.

Hathaway also expresses her joy in rom-coms and her hope to continue working in the genre, reflecting on her experiences with iconic directors. 

When asked if she will be in any future romantic comedies, maybe even one that stars the Queen of Genovia, Hathaway, unfortunately, did not have a grand update. However, she is eager to get the ball rolling.

Challengers promises more than just intense tennis matches. It delves into a complex exploration of queer relationships, highlighted by provocative sauna scenes and playful exchanges that hint at the characters’ fluid sexual dynamics. Speaking to Variety, O’Connor comments on the intricacies of their interactions, “Yeah, I think they’re all fluid. They’re trying to understand where that plays out and how it plays out. 

“I don’t know if there’s a clear cut answer to that, but I think that they’re all completely tied [to each other]. They’re all in.”
