So I just do it. But I recognize that transitioning is beautiful. Why not let the world see what that looks like?”

“Coming out is always viewed as this grand reveal, but I was never not out. Today is about clarity: I am a trans woman. My pronouns are she/her. My name is Tommy,” she concluded.

Darren Criss, renowned for his role as the charming Blaine Anderson on Glee, has recently described himself as “culturally queer.” So, what does that mean? 

A Trailblazer on and Off Screen

His portrayal of Blaine, the talented and openly gay lead singer of the Dalton Academy Warblers, helped shape one of television’s most memorable queer couples alongside Chris Colfer’s character, Kurt Hummel.

Beyond Glee, Criss continued to influence the queer narrative through his performances. His role in American Crime Story: The Assassination of Gianni Versace as Andrew Cunanan earned him critical acclaim, including a Primetime Emmy Award and a Golden Globe. These roles deepened his connection and respect for the queer community, which he openly celebrated at a recent appearance at the Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo.

“It was f**king awesome,” Criss exclaimed to an enthusiastic crowd, reminiscing about portraying a gay relationship (Glee) on mainstream TV. He added, “Nowadays, we just call it a relationship on TV. But to contextualize it, a gay relationship on mainstream Fox, that’s a pretty cool thing to be a part of.”

“I have been so culturally queer my whole life,” he shared, shedding light on his upbringing. “Not because I’m trying to be cool but because I am trying to be cool. The things in my life that I have tried to emulate, learn from, and be inspired by are 100 percent queer as f**k.”

Should Straight Actors Play Gay? 

In 2018, Criss made a significant decision about his career trajectory. After playing three high-profile gay characters, he announced that he would no longer pursue queer roles. “There are certain [queer] roles that I’ll see that are just wonderful,” he told Bustle. “But I want to make sure I won’t be another straight boy taking a gay man’s role.”

There has long been a discussion in Hollywood around whether or not straight actors should play queer characters. Some actors have even come forward stating they want to see more gay actors in straight roles.

Stepping into the spotlight with a poignant response is Daniel Radcliffe, the actor whose portrayal of Harry Potter has made him a household name worldwide. 

“It makes me really sad, ultimately,” Radcliffe told The Atlantic. “I do look at the person that I met, the times that we met, and the books that she wrote, and the world that she created, and all of that is to me so deeply empathic.”

Radcliffe mentioned that he has not been in contact with Rowling since she began expressing her views against the trans community.

Radcliffe’s reaction went beyond mere disagreement; it was a thoughtful reflection on the importance of affirming and supporting transgender and non-binary individuals. His stance emerged not just as a counter-narrative to Rowling’s comments but as an influential moment that highlighted the potential for discord between public figures over deeply divisive issues. 

Daniel Radcliffe’s Advocacy for Transgender Rights

In 2020, Radcliffe wrote a heartfelt statement for The Trevor Project and publicly addressed the controversy surrounding J.K. Rowling’s anti-trans comments. 

He eloquently affirmed, “transgender women are women, and transgender men are men,” setting a powerful example of allyship and inclusivity.

“To all the people who now feel that their experience of the books has been tarnished or diminished, I am deeply sorry for the pain these comments have caused you,” he wrote, referring to Rowling’s previou tweets. “I really hope that you don’t entirely lose what was valuable in these stories to you.” 

His advocacy didn’t spring up overnight; rather, it’s been part of a long-standing commitment to LGBTQ+ rights, significantly amplified through his work with The Trevor Project. 

To The Atlantic, the actor said he crafted his statement to distinguish Rowling’s opinions from those of the franchise’s community.

“I’d worked with the Trevor Project for 12 years and it would have seemed like, I don’t know, immense cowardice to me to not say something,” he said. 

“I wanted to try and help people that had been negatively affected by the comments… and to say that if those are Jo’s views, then they are not the views of everybody associated with the Potter franchise.”

Radcliffe acknowledged the pivotal role J.K. Rowling played in his career, stating, “Harry Potter ‘would not have happened without’ Rowling,” and admitting, “nothing in my life would have probably happened the way it is without that person.” 

However, he emphasized that this does not bind him indefinitely to her views: “But that doesn’t mean that you owe the things you truly believe to someone else for your entire life.”

The Show Must Go On

The talk show wrapped up in May 2022, marking a significant pause in DeGeneres’s career. Reflecting on her setbacks during her stand-up show, she quipped, “For those of you keeping score, this is the second time I’ve been kicked out of show business… Eventually they’re going to kick me out for a third time because I’m mean, old, and gay.”

Post-show, DeGeneres engaged in a heartfelt Q&A with the audience, expressing the emotional toll of losing her talk show. “This was like, ‘What is going on?’ It was so hurtful. I couldn’t gain perspective. I couldn’t do anything to make myself understand that it wasn’t personal,” she shared. 

Despite these challenges, she revealed plans to feature her stand-up material in a Netflix special this fall, suggesting that her days in showbiz are far from over.

Facing the Music

DeGeneres acknowledged the extreme reactions she has faced throughout her career. “It’s been such a toll on my ego and my self-esteem. There’s such extremes in this business, people either love you and idolize you or they hate you,” she told the audience, “and those people somehow are louder.”
