Troye Sivan Responds to FDA Crackdown on Poppers and Calls it the End of the ‘Poppers Party’

0

Troye Sivan’s latest Instagram post speaks volumes about his reaction to the FDA’s increasing scrutiny of poppers, a popular recreational drug in the LGBTQ+ community. The gay singer and actor, known for his hit song “Rush,” shared his thoughts with followers in a playful yet somber way, acknowledging the shift in the landscape of poppers’ availability and use. On Sunday, Sivan posted a photo of himself with a sad expression—quite the contrast to his more upbeat appearance on the cover art for his song “Rush,” which was heavily inspired by the effects of poppers.

Sivan’s post, which included the caption “mfw the poppers party is over,” was a clear response to the growing controversy surrounding poppers, a substance commonly used in club scenes and by people in the queer community for its euphoric effects. The song “Rush,” a standout track from his latest album Something to Give Each Other, reached number 77 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number two on the Hot Dance/Electronic chart. In the song, Sivan sings, “You got my heartbeat racing / My body blazing / I feel the rush / Addicted to your touch,” drawing a direct comparison between the rush felt from poppers and the intense emotions of love and desire.

Sivan’s Instagram story comes in the wake of increasing regulatory pressure on poppers from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), an issue that has sparked a great deal of debate across social media. In particular, Sivan’s reaction seemed to be in direct response to an article by The New York Times, which asked the question, “Is the Poppers Party Over?” The piece outlined the FDA’s crackdown on certain manufacturers of the substance, which has long been used as a party enhancer, especially in the LGBTQ+ community. In the story, various popular brands of poppers were shown alongside commentary about the potential end of the poppers era.

The New York Times Instagram post about the article quickly became a hotbed for comments, many of which expressed frustration with the FDA’s focus on poppers, given the context of more pressing health issues facing the nation. One Instagram user, @grantgold_, remarked, “Won’t do anything for a measles outbreak or public health funding, but god forbid there’s poppers. Such a joke.” Another user, @lowercaseletter, added, “America banned poppers faster than guns.” Comments like these reflect a sense of disbelief that poppers, a substance used primarily within the LGBTQ+ community, are receiving such heavy regulation while other public health issues remain unresolved.

The FDA’s actions have led to tangible consequences for businesses that rely on selling poppers. In March, the company Double Scorpio, which sold poppers under the brand name Double Scorpio Cleaner, ceased all operations following a search and seizure conducted by the FDA at its offices. The company wiped its website and social media accounts, replacing them with a statement that referenced the government action. The statement, dated March 13, 2025, expressed gratitude to the company’s supporters and reassured the public that it would continue to communicate through alternative channels moving forward.

“Thank you to everyone who has supported us these last eight years,” the statement read. “We’ve always cared about making an authentic product and being engaged with and supporting our community.” Double Scorpio went on to explain that they were not the only company affected, noting that the FDA had conducted similar actions against other manufacturers and sellers of poppers. Pac-West Distributing, which produces the Rush brand of poppers, also wiped its website following similar concerns.

The FDA’s crackdown has garnered heightened attention due to the involvement of Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who was recently appointed secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services under President Donald Trump. Kennedy, who has a long history of controversial views, has previously claimed that poppers are linked to AIDS, citing unproven associations between the substance and the virus. “The virus is a passenger virus, and these people are dying mainly because of poppers,” Kennedy said in a video. He also argued that a significant portion of the first AIDS-related deaths involved individuals who had used poppers.

These claims have been widely criticized by the scientific community, with many experts disputing the supposed connection between poppers and AIDS. However, the resurgence of anti-poppers sentiment under Kennedy’s leadership has sparked concern among many in the LGBTQ+ community, especially since poppers are widely used by individuals at gay clubs, parties, and other spaces within the community.

While the FDA’s crackdown continues, the broader conversation around poppers has revealed a deeper cultural divide, particularly when it comes to regulation of substances that have a disproportionate impact on marginalized communities. For many in the queer community, poppers have become a ritualistic part of their nightlife and socializing, and the ongoing effort to restrict access to the substance is seen as yet another form of regulatory overreach targeting the LGBTQ+ community.

Troye Sivan, known for his advocacy on LGBTQ+ issues, has once again used his platform to draw attention to the issue. By sharing his thoughts on Instagram, Sivan not only expressed personal disappointment but also underscored the cultural significance of poppers in the queer community. His song “Rush,” with its catchy hook and bold lyrics, has become an anthem of sorts for those who have embraced the effects of the drug, and the artist’s reaction to the crackdown highlights the tension between personal expression and regulatory control.

As the FDA’s crackdown on poppers continues, it remains to be seen how this issue will unfold in the coming months. For now, artists like Sivan, who have closely intertwined their music with queer culture, continue to bring attention to the evolving debates surrounding substance use and regulation, shedding light on the intersection of public health policy and personal identity.

Chappell Roan Becomes First Artist Since Beyoncé to Debut at #1 on the Country Charts

Chappell Roan has achieved even more success with her new song, “The Giver,” debuting at #5 on Billboard’s Hot 100 and claiming the #1 spot on the Hot Country Songs chart. This milestone makes Roan the first artist since Beyoncé to achieve such a feat, with Beyoncé also debuting at #1 on the Hot Country Songs chart in 2023 with “Texas Hold ‘Em.”

Chart-Topping Success

Roan’s achievement marks her third top 10 hit on the Billboard Hot 100, following the success of “Good Luck, Babe!” which peaked at #4 last year, and “Pink Pony Club,” which reached #7 earlier this month and is currently ranked #9. “The Giver” also makes its debut in the top 40, marking Roan’s first-ever appearance at such a high level on the Hot 100.

A Historic Debut

With “The Giver” claiming the #1 spot on the Hot Country Songs chart, Roan becomes just the third woman ever to debut at #1 with her first-ever entry on the chart. The only other women to achieve this are pop icons Bebe Rexha, who hit #1 in 2017 with “Meant to Be” featuring Florida Georgia Line, and Beyoncé with her 2023 debut of “Texas Hold ‘Em.”

Hot 100 Updates

Meanwhile, on the Hot 100, Kendrick Lamar and SZA’s collaboration, “luther,” holds steady at #1 for its fifth consecutive week. In other chart news, Doechii’s “Anxiety,” which samples Gotye’s 2012 hit “Somebody That I Used to Know,” becomes her first top 10 hit on the Hot 100.

Chappell Roan’s remarkable debut further cements her place in music history as she continues to break boundaries and blaze new trails across genres.

Historic Houston Throuple’s Polaroid Collection Up for Auction

A rare collection of over 9,700 Polaroid photos, chronicling the lives of a groundbreaking Houston throuple, is set to be auctioned at the upcoming ABAA New York International Antiquarian Book Fair. The collection, spanning from 1964 to 1991, documents the polyamorous relationship between Jay Hollenburger, Arthur Slaughter, and Gary Grether, affectionately known as JAG.

A Groundbreaking Throuple

The three men began their romantic journey around 1970 when Hollenburger and Slaughter, who had been together since 1961, welcomed Grether into their relationship. A quote from the couple during this time captured their dynamic: “I don’t love you any less, but I love this man as well.”

Hollenburger, Slaughter, and Grether lived openly as a gay throuple during a time when such relationships were not widely accepted. Slaughter was particularly vocal about the importance of being visible, believing that greater societal acceptance of the LGBTQ+ community would come from better understanding. The trio often hosted elaborate parties, including the annual “Follyball” event in the 1970s, which uniquely combined drag shows with volleyball.

A Legacy of Photographs

Hollenburger meticulously documented their lives together, recording the date, location, and names of attendees for nearly every Polaroid photograph. Archivists believe that Hollenburger could have amassed as many as 20,000 photos throughout their years together. Many of the images capture the vibrant social circle and festive gatherings the throuple hosted.

The collection provides an intimate glimpse into the lives of this historic trio, offering both a personal and social history of the time. The Polaroids span decades, documenting the evolution of their relationship, friendships, and community. Tragically, Grether and Slaughter both passed away due to AIDS, in 1990 and 1995, respectively. Hollenburger, the last surviving member, passed away in September 2024, and the photos were later acquired at his estate sale.

The Auction and What’s Next

The Polaroid collection will be available for sale at the ABAA New York International Antiquarian Book Fair, which will take place from April 3 to 6 at the Park Avenue Armory. The photos offer a unique and candid look into the lives of a pioneering polyamorous trio, and their legacy as trailblazers within the LGBTQ+ community.

For collectors, history enthusiasts, and those interested in LGBTQ+ culture, this collection provides a rare window into a chapter of queer history, captured through the lens of love, community, and acceptance. Scroll below to see some of the photos that will be at the auction!

Midori Monét Reflects on Winning Miss International Queen USA and the Power of Trans Visibility

Midori Monét’s journey to becoming Miss International Queen USA was nothing short of captivating. From perfecting her glam look to the emotional moment when her name was called, Monét’s rise to the crown is a story of resilience, passion, and community. As she prepares for the Miss International Queen competition in Thailand, her message of visibility and self-empowerment continues to resonate, especially on Trans Day of Visibility.

The Road to the Crown

When Midori Monét was crowned Miss International Queen USA, she was ready for the spotlight, but not without a bit of backstage humor. “Let me just put on a lash in like two seconds if that’s okay,” she told Pride with a playful grin, moments before she made her appearance as the reigning queen. Known for her calm demeanor, Monét quickly transformed into the poised and confident winner the world had come to expect. But beneath the pageantry, there’s much more to Monét than just a beautiful face and a crown.

“I am a full-time entertainer, community member, and organizer,” she says. “I am a ballroom house mother, a sister, a daughter, and a friend that anybody would want to have.” Her self-description reveals a woman who wears many hats—each with the grace and nurturing energy of a dedicated leader.

Overcoming Doubts and Reaching New Heights

Monét’s journey to becoming Miss International Queen USA wasn’t always easy. She recalled competing in Miss Washington USA, a cisgender pageant, where she placed in the top six. Despite her success, she was overcome with self-doubt, feeling as though she didn’t belong in the competition. “I told myself that as a trans woman, I don’t belong here… I felt as if I let myself down,” she reflected.

A post shared by TuckItUp (@tuckituppp)

However, when the opportunity to compete in Miss International Queen presented itself, Monét decided to embrace the challenge. With only two months to prepare, she threw herself into creating a pageant package that included clothes and routines, many of which she designed herself. Her bold decision to compete paid off, and she became the third Black winner of the prestigious title in the franchise’s history.

Life Beyond the Crown

While Monét’s pageant success has been a major achievement, her journey isn’t solely about the glitz and glamour. As she reflected on her experiences, Monét shared the challenges of navigating life as a trans woman in the United States, particularly during politically charged times. She recounted a recent trip to Houston, where the fear of public spaces, such as restrooms, weighed heavily on her mind.

But rather than allowing fear to dominate her experience, Monét is determined to use her visibility to make a difference. “We need to be visible,” she says firmly. “We need to stand up and use our voices to show everyone that we are thriving.” Her message isn’t just about personal empowerment; it’s about the strength and unity of the trans community, particularly trans women of color.

8 Groundbreaking and Heartwarming Moments from Trans and Non-Binary People Who Shaped the Past Year

Trans Day of Visibility Highlights Resilience and Achievements

Trans Day of Visibility, observed annually on March 31, provides an opportunity for the LGBTQ+ community to celebrate and honor trans and non-binary people worldwide. In a year marked by challenges, including anti-LGBTQ+ legislation in the U.S. and shifts in gender-affirming care policies in the UK, it is crucial to acknowledge both the struggles and the triumphs of the trans community.

Nikki’s Olympic Achievement

Non-binary athlete Nikki Hiltz competed in the 1500m final at the Paris 2024 Olympics, finishing seventh. Hiltz, a middle-distance runner who founded the Pride 5k charity race, used their platform to advocate against what they called “ignorance and hate” directed at trans athletes. The Pride 5k has raised over $172,000 for The Trevor Project since its inception in 2020.

“Anti-trans rhetoric is anti-woman,” Hiltz wrote in an Instagram post during the Olympics. “These people aren’t ‘protecting women’s sports’, they are enforcing rigid gender norms, and anyone who doesn’t fit perfectly into those norms is targeted and vilified.”

Non-Binary Eurovision History

Singer Nemo from Switzerland made Eurovision history in 2024 as the first non-binary winner of the competition. Nemo’s winning track, “The Code,” explores their journey of self-discovery and acceptance of their non-binary identity.

In an interview with The Associated Press before the semi-final, Nemo expressed the beauty of being a non-binary artist on a major international stage. “Knowing they like a song where I am unconditionally myself, and I talk about the journey of finding myself and being non-binary, and knowing that it touches them… [is] really beautiful,” Nemo said.

Sarah McBride Makes Waves in Congress

Delaware Democrat Sarah McBride became the first openly transgender member of Congress in January, following the U.S. election. McBride, 34, made history as the first trans person to be sworn into the U.S. House of Representatives and has been a vocal advocate for trans rights.

“The Republican party is obsessed with culture war issues,” McBride said in March, criticizing right-wing politicians pushing anti-LGBTQ+ legislation. “The American people deserve serious legislators [and] serious elected officials who are focused on bringing people together to deliver real results for the American people.”

Alex Consani Breaks Boundaries in Fashion

Model Alex Consani made fashion history in December by becoming the first openly transgender woman to win Model of the Year at the 2024 Fashion Awards. Consani, 21, had previously broken barriers by becoming one of the first two openly trans models to walk the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. She has also appeared in a Charli XCX music video and walked for designers including Hugo Boss, Burberry, and Chloé.

Literary Success with Dylan Mulvaney

Influencer Dylan Mulvaney achieved success with the release of her debut book, “Paper Doll: Notes from a Late Bloomer,” in March. The book, which explores her first year of transitioning, became a New York Times bestseller. “They hate to see a trans woman winning,” Mulvaney joked on Instagram after making the bestseller list. “The dolls, we stay winning.”

Advocacy Against Transphobia

Amidst rising anti-LGBTQ+ and anti-trans sentiment, trans and non-binary celebrities and activists used their platforms to advocate for the community.

“As trans people our identities have been criminalized, and we found ways to have community, to have joy, and to be ourselves,” Laverne Cox said in an interview discussing political challenges. Elliot Page added, “We are at a time in history where the rights of LGBTQ+ people are being revoked, restricted and eliminated throughout the world, and the effects are devastating.”

Representation in Entertainment

Trans and non-binary actors continued to increase representation in television and film. While representation remains limited, with trans characters accounting for only 5% of characters in TV and film from 2023 to 2024, their presence is considered crucial. Laverne Cox starred in “Clean Slate,” portraying a trans New Yorker, and trans actor Mary Malone received praise for her role in the Netflix thriller “Missing You.”
