Love Inc., the equality-minded® wedding publication, has unveiled the first-ever LGBTQ+ Honeymoon Safety Index, a nationwide ranking of U.S. states and Washington, D.C., based on safety and inclusivity for LGBTQ+ travelers.

The new index evaluates destinations using six pillars: legal protections, anti-LGBTQ+ laws, hate-crime statistics, local community climate, inclusive hospitality, and access to affirming care. Scores were calculated from trusted sources, including the Human Rights Campaign, FBI hate crime data, and public acceptance polling from PRRI and Pew Research Center.

Top-Ranked Destinations
Leading the way are Washington, D.C., Hawaii, and Massachusetts, offering strong protections and welcoming environments. Other high-ranking states include Oregon, Vermont, and California.

Bottom of the List
Conversely, states with fewer legal protections and higher risks include West Virginia, South Dakota, and Alabama. Overall, the index helps couples identify where they can enjoy a romantic escape without safety concerns.

“Every couple deserves a honeymoon that’s not only romantic but also safe,” said Brittny Drye, Love Inc. founder and editor-in-chief. “The LGBTQ+ travel market contributes billions to the U.S. economy, and couples should know where their love is truly celebrated. This index gives them that insight.”

How the Index Works
Each state received a composite score between 0 and 100, reflecting legal realities and lived experiences. Modifiers accounted for regional differences, such as inclusive cities within conservative states. Grades range from A (strong protections and affirming culture) to F (high risk and limited protections).

Love Inc.’s initiative comes amid rising concerns about anti-LGBTQ+ legislation, hate crimes, and cultural exclusion. After over a decade covering weddings with an equality-focused lens, Drye and her team created the index to give couples a practical guide for planning safer and more affirming honeymoons.

Planning Your LGBTQ+ Honeymoon
The index allows newlyweds to make informed decisions on where to celebrate love without fear. Whether it’s a tropical retreat in Hawaii or a city getaway in D.C., couples can now weigh both romance and safety when booking their trip.
