Lili Reinhart already has her next project in mind, and she wants it to be gay. While promoting her new rom-com, the actress revealed she’s trying to bring a novella about lesbian vampires to the screen.
Reinhart is currently promoting The Love Hypothesis, the film adaptation of Ali Hazelwood’s novel. She plays a Ph.D. student whose impulsive kiss with a professor leads to a fake relationship that starts to feel all too real.
During an interview with Hits Radio about the movie, the Riverdale star was asked if there was another book she’d like to see adapted. She had an answer ready.
“There is a book that I’m trying to get adapted that is about lesbian vampires and people are too afraid to make that,” Reinhart said. “So if you work at a studio and are watching this video, I don’t know why you wouldn’t make that in this day and age. That’s what I’m trying to do.”
She didn’t name the novella, and there’s no announced adaptation yet. Could she mean Sheridan Le Fanu’s Carmilla, the gothic classic about a female vampire and the young woman who falls under her spell? Or perhaps Carmilla & Laura, S.D. Simper’s romantic retelling? V.E. Schwab’s Bury Our Bones in the Midnight Soil has also been brought up, though that book is a full-length novel, and Reinhart specifically said “novella.” For now, the title remains a mystery.
“I’m instantly way more interested in doing a movie if my character is a little gay,” she continued. “Because I’m a little gay. Literally.”
Reinhart, who has spoken openly about being bisexual, has brought queer characters to the screen before. For one, in Riverdale’s final season, Betty Cooper was part of a quad relationship with Archie, Veronica and Jughead.
She later played Harper, a gay woman navigating a long-term relationship with Jesse, played by Alyah Chanelle Scott, in Hal & Harper. And in Forbidden Fruits, her character Apple shares a kiss with Cherry, played by Victoria Pedretti, amid the film’s charged friendship dynamics.
For now, Reinhart is starring in The Love Hypothesis, the adaptation of Ali Hazelwood’s novel. But if a studio takes her up on that vampire pitch, we’re more than ready to support.
