Marcos Angeleri: His Football Career and Estudiantes Roots

A sourced look at Marcos Angeleri's Estudiantes titles, spells in England and Spain, Argentina debut and return to the club after retiring.
Author:

Marcos Angeleri built his football career at Estudiantes de La Plata, winning major titles before playing in England and Spain. After retiring, the Argentine defender returned to the club where he had developed as a young player.

Club records provide a clearer account of that career than the biographical details in an earlier version of this article. Angeleri was born in Treinta de Agosto, Argentina, on April 7, 1983, according to Málaga CF’s official signing announcement.

From Estudiantes to European football

Angeleri made his Estudiantes debut in 2002. He was part of the club’s 2006 Apertura championship side under Diego Simeone and its Copa Libertadores-winning team in 2009.

His career then took him to Sunderland in England. He returned to Estudiantes in 2012 before joining Málaga in the summer of 2013. Those dates matter: his move to Spain came after his English spell and his return to Argentina.

Málaga’s announcement also records his senior Argentina debut against France on February 11, 2009, under coach Diego Maradona. By the time of his 2013 signing, he had represented Argentina four times.

Returning to the club that raised him

In a March 28, 2021 interview published by Estudiantes, Angeleri discussed returning to work for the club after his playing career had ended. He recalled living in the club’s accommodation as a teenager and making his first steps through its teams.

He said his interest in football administration had developed while he was still a player. Conversations with former teammate Juan Sebastián Verón helped lead to the opportunity, and Angeleri described a role supporting the club’s football operations while remaining willing to contribute elsewhere.

That interview connects the two stages of his career: a player shaped by Estudiantes and a retired professional returning to contribute his experience. It is a documented part of his public life, with Angeleri speaking in his own words.

Correction, October 24, 2026: This article has been rewritten as a career profile. The earlier version misstated Angeleri’s birthplace and the timing of his move to Málaga. Unrelated intimate material and links have been removed.
