Eric Dane Will Guest Star on Season 2 of ‘Brilliant Minds’ as an ALS Patient

Eric Dane will guest star on the Zachary Quinto-led medical drama, playing a patient diagnosed with the same neurodegenerative disease he lives with in real life.

Dane’s character Matthew is a firefighter who struggles to share his ALS diagnosis with his family. He will appear in the ninth episode of the ongoing second season of Brilliant Minds.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS, is a rare and progressive neurodegenerative disease that attacks the nerve cells responsible for controlling voluntary muscle movement. Over time, it leads to muscle weakness, paralysis, and difficulty speaking, swallowing, and breathing, while cognitive function often remains intact.

Sometimes called “Lou Gehrig’s disease,” after the baseball legend who brought national attention to it in the 1930s, ALS affects people of all backgrounds and currently has no known cure. Advocacy groups and researchers continue to push for better treatments, awareness, and support for those living with the condition and their loved ones.

Since revealing his diagnosis in April, the Euphoria star has become a passionate advocate for ALS research and funding. In September, Dane joined Congressman Eric Swalwell, along with advocates and medical experts from I AM ALS, to call for better resources and care for those living with the disease.

During their discussion in Washington, D.C., he opened up about what drives him to keep fighting — his two daughters. In a video shared by Swalwell, Dane vowed to “fight until the last breath” to help find a cure and be there for every milestone in their lives.

Despite his diagnosis, Dane hasn’t slowed down. He’s continuing his work on season 3 of Euphoria and recently starred in Prime Video’s Countdown.

Inspired by the life and work of neurologist Oliver Sacks, Brilliant Minds follows the brilliant but enigmatic Dr. Oliver Wolf and his team of interns as they navigate the uncharted frontier of the human mind. Alongside medical marvels and ethical dilemmas, the series dives into the characters’ personal lives, tackling issues of identity, relationships, and mental health.

The series also made history, as Quinto became the first openly gay actor to play a lead gay doctor on primetime network TV.

“I’ve always loved medical dramas, but I imagined how much more powerful they could’ve been if they had a gay lead,” showrunner Michael Grassi told Gayety. “With Oliver Wolf, we get to see him as a hero, a son, a mentor, and now, a romantic lead. That’s something I wish I had growing up.”

Season 2 of Brilliant Minds is now airing on NBC, with new episodes airing Mondays and streaming the next day on Peacock. Dane’s episode will air on November 24.

Directed by Jeff Darling and written by Evan M. Wiener, He Went That Way is a gripping 1964 thriller that transforms the typical buddy road trip into a chilling tale based on true events. With a runtime of 95 minutes and a riveting NR rating, the film stars Jacob Elordi as the 19-year-old serial killer Bobby, who takes an unexpected ride with celebrity animal handler Jim, portrayed by Zachary Quinto.

Set against the desolate backdrop of Route 66, the story takes a wicked turn when Jim’s precious cargo, the beloved TV sensation chimpanzee Spanky, becomes an unwitting companion to the increasingly tense duo. As stress escalates and the clash of their fiery personalities creates a volatile atmosphere, the road they travel becomes a treacherous path fraught with danger.

Dive into this exclusive clip, where Elordi and Quinto’s dynamic faces an electrifying test.

    Based on a True Story

In 1964, the real-life chilling encounter between ice skater Dave Pitts, his chimpanzee Spanky, and a young hitchhiker amid a killing spree inspired Conrad Hilberry’s novel Luke Karamazov. This eerie tale comes to life in He Went That Way, Jeff Darling’s directorial debut. Tragically, Darling’s promising career was cut short by a 2022 surfing accident, leaving behind a visually striking legacy.

With stellar performances by Elordi and Quinto, this taut thriller keeps audiences on the edge of their seats.

Watch: Lukas Gage Give Zachary Quinto a Happy Ending in Hilarious ‘Down Low’ Trailer

“Accidents happen. It was your first time being gay did you really think you weren’t gonna make any mistakes?”

The trailer for Zachary Quinto and Lukas Gage’s hilarious R-rated comedy Down Low promises some extremely gay chaos. So far, audiences can expect at least one naked Quinto, one happy ending, and one dead Grindr hookup.

Down Low is a “chock full of tastelessness”

The official synopsis reads: “A deeply repressed man, the uninhibited young man that gives him a happy ending, and all the lives they ruin along the way.” Quinto plays Gary, a divorcee attempting to take back his life and live out the queer dreams he has repressed for 50 years. That’s where he meets Cameron (Gage), a sex-working twink who gives Gary an unforgettable massage and then decides to help him take charge of his life.

With Cameron’s help, Gary joins a dating app and quickly schedules a hookup with a handsome stranger (Sebastian Arroyo). However, things go downhill quickly, and soon, the men are hiring a so-called expert to hide a dead body because the hookup guy is (you guessed it) dead and bleeding all over the Mountain Ashwood flooring.

There is some light at the end of the tunnel, as Gary tells Cameron he is glad he met him “even if multiple people are dead because of it.” Later in the trailer, he even refers to himself as a “cool, hot zaddy.” We love to see him coming out of his shell!

Gay Sex Apps and Dead Bodies

Down Low was co-written by The White Lotus Star and Phoebe Fisher. It also stars Judith Light, Simon Rex, Christopher Reed Brown, and Audra McDonald.

Gage described the comedy as an unhinged take on Pretty Woman. “Originally, we really wanted a fast-paced, f**ked-up rom-com. But it was always about two very different people that are in this larger-than-life, crazy circumstance and what they learn from one another within this 24-hour period,” Gage told Vulture. “There’s a little bit more heart in this version. It was needing a little bit more of a soul and a little bit more redeemability from the characters.”

Down Low will be available to stream on October 10.

AHS: NYC is shrouded in mystery. However, we know it follows a series of bizarre deaths and disappearances in New York City. On October 12, FX released a new teaser featuring classic AHS imagery: blinged-out S&M gear and a syringe injecting blood into an 80s cocktail.

What’s the theme of American Horror Story: NYC?

While FX and Murphy have been tight-lipped about all of the previous seasons of the long-running show, this season seems particularly mysterious. Since FX announced the season’s theme, AHS took to social media to share various images and cryptic messages. Very few details about AHS: NYC has been released over the last few months. However, the show’s social media channels have been very active and perhaps hold clues.

On October 12, the @AmericanHorrorStory Twitter account tweeted a video promising “a season like no other” with a caption that included the phrase “Let it consume you.” This led some fans to speculate that the new season could have a cannibalistic theme.

On October 6, the @RyanMurphyProductions Twitter account shared a teaser for the upcoming seasons with a caption that reads, “The deadliest year. A season like no other.” So, will AHS: NYC be the deadliest season yet? We’re about to find out.

American Horror Story: NYC premieres on October 19 on FX and streaming on Hulu the next day.

Zachary Quinto Opens Up About His PrEP Comments

When Zachary Quinto made comments about PrEP, the Twittersphere went absolutely berserk. But, in a recent interview with Michelangelo Signorile of the Huffington Post, he addressed his comments brilliantly.

In an effort to exmplin his position on HIV prevention and PrEP, Quinto said:

“Look, I just think we need to be vigilant as a community and a community of gay men. It was not my intention to judge anybody or to rankle anybody, or to put myself in some kind of superior position by any means.

I think if people use PrEP as part of a responsible regimen of taking care of themselves and preserving their bodies and their well-being and the well-being of the people they’re having sex with, then more power to them. There was this thing that I was ‘slut-shaming.’ Anybody who knows me knows that that is the last thing I would ever do. I just think that we can’t let our guard down.”
