Ohana Means Nobody Gets Left Behind

Tia Carrere just reminded us all what “ohana” really means.

In an exclusive chat with PEOPLE, the Wayne’s World and Lilo & Stitch star opened up about her 19-year-old son Jude coming out as transgender. And honestly, her genuine support has us feeling all warm and fuzzy inside.

Jude Finds Happiness Out of the Spotlight

Carrere revealed that Jude, whom she shares with ex-husband Simon Wakelin, typically stays away from the bright lights of Hollywood. But he did step onto the red carpet recently for the premiere of Lilo & Stitch. Unfortunately, Carrere had to miss the big night—she was busy filming another project in the Philippines. (Talk about a busy schedule!)

While Carrere’s place is clearly on-screen, Jude prefers a quieter life. Hollywood might not be his scene, but he’s definitely making waves in his own way. Instead of acting or music, Jude thrives in art and working with animals. Carrere mentioned he’s great with animals and deeply creative. “I don’t know what career he’ll choose, but he’s got such a talent with animals,” Carrere proudly shared with PEOPLE.

Supporting Jude’s Authentic Self

What matters most to Carrere is Jude’s happiness and comfort. “He’s incredibly clear about who he is and he’s genuinely happy,” she shared. For Carrere, seeing her son embrace his identity and live authentically is everything.

Carrere also praised Jude’s thoughtful nature. She described him as the unofficial therapist in his friend group. “He’s always the designated driver, always taking care of everyone else,” Carrere laughed. “That’s just Jude. He’s naturally caring.”

Tia Carrere’s Career Flourishes With Lilo & Stitch

Meanwhile, Carrere’s own career is taking off (again!), thanks to Disney’s blockbuster Lilo & Stitch remake. Carrere plays Mrs. Kekoa, a compassionate social worker. The movie is dominating the box office, earning a huge $341 million globally on opening weekend.

“It’s rewarding to portray someone real and relatable—not just glamorous,” Carrere noted.

Carrere’s Future Plans: More Acting, More Music

Looking forward, Carrere has no plans to slow down. Between new acting gigs and ongoing music collaborations with her Grammy-winning musical partner Daniel Ho, she’s excited about what’s next.

“I want to keep creating for decades,” she said enthusiastically. “Acting, singing—it’s all part of my passion.”

Clearly, Carrere and Jude truly understand what ohana is all about: loving and supporting each other, no matter what.
