The Threesome isn’t shy about diving straight into the messy, complicated fallout of one impulsive night. The film follows Olivia (Zoey Deutch), Connor (Jonah Hauer-King), and Jenny (Ruby Cruz) as their wild hookup throws all three into the raw chaos of adulthood.

For Jenny, it also marks a milestone: her first same-sex kiss with Olivia. Ruby admits it wasn’t exactly a fairytale moment.

“Well, Jenny’s experience is complicated. I’m going to speak for what I know, which is Jenny’s experience. And she thought this was the most epic night of her life, I would say. And that proved to be more complicated and kind of sad and stressful. So I think maybe, I think it was, yeah, I think for Jenny’s first same sex kiss, I think, yeah, it could have gone a little bit smoother for her. Maybe.”

Meanwhile Jaboukie Young-White, who plays best friend Greg, said the kiss was perfectly timed.

“Because if you have, assuming that the third person is a heterosexual cishet person, then they’re going to be able to coach you through. They’re kind of giving you a play by play and giving you critiques. You’re kind of bringing your own knowledge of what you respond. I think it’s really perfect. I really think it’s ideal.”

Jaboukie’s character may not be at the center of any threesomes, but he knows how to stand by his friends, even when they’re making a mess of their lives.

“I think he likes the mess… I really think that if that happened to me, I would jump at the opportunity to be all in their business. But the exchange for that is that you usually have to give advice if you’re going to be in someone’s business like that. You can’t just take that and run. You have to kind of pay the toll. But gay people are holding the straight world together. That’s the other thing too. If we were to withdraw what happens, unfortunately, we are the unsung heroes.”

Up next, Jaboukie is bringing another gay best friend to life in The Love Hypothesis, Amazon MGM’s rom-com based on Ali Hazelwood’s bestselling novel. Directed by Claire Scanlon, the film stars Lili Reinhart as Ph.D. student Olive Smith and Tom Bateman as her intimidating professor, Adam Carlsen.
