Pop fans officially have a new countdown on their hands. Ariana Grande kicked off the rollout for her next album era today by unveiling the first teaser for “Hate That I Made You Love Me,” the lead single from her upcoming record Petal (buckle up buttercup, we’re on the verge of new Ari music!).
The short clip, shared across Grande’s social platforms on May 18, leans fully into atmosphere instead of giving away the chorus. Presented in black and white, the teaser flashes fragmented words from the song’s title alongside close-up photos of the singer. The audio sounds warped and delicate at the same time, resembling dripping water that’s been distorted into something moodier. There are no lyrics and no vocals, just enough tension to send fans into detective mode online.
“Hate That I Made You Love Me” arrives May 29 and serves as the first official taste of Petal, Grande’s eighth studio album, due July 31. The singer previously revealed that the track was produced alongside longtime collaborators Max Martin and ILYA, the duo behind many of her biggest pop hits. When announcing the single earlier this month, Grande called it “one of my favorite songs I’ll ever write.”
A New Era Starts Before Tour Season
The timing of the release puts Grande’s next chapter into motion just ahead of her upcoming tour. Her Eternal Sunshine Tour launches June 6, marking her first major trek in six years. By the time Petal arrives at the end of July, fans will already be deep into the live experience.
The tour includes 41 dates across North America and Europe, with scheduled stops in cities including Los Angeles, New York City, Montreal and Chicago before wrapping with a 10-night run at London’s The O2 Arena.
Grande has kept details surrounding Petal relatively locked down so far, which has only fueled anticipation. The album follows the massive success of Eternal Sunshine, which dominated charts and social media discourse throughout 2024 while producing hits that quickly became staples in her catalog.
Fans Are Already Reading Into Everything
Even without vocals, the teaser instantly sparked speculation about the emotional direction of the single. Some fans compared the eerie production to dream-pop and ambient electronic music, while others are convinced Grande is about to deliver another devastating breakup anthem. Either way, the internet is already dissecting every frame like it’s a true-crime documentary.
The visual presentation also signals a tonal shift from the brighter aesthetic tied to Eternal Sunshine. Instead of polished glamour, the “Hate That I Made You Love Me” teaser feels colder and more intimate, hinting that Petal may explore a darker emotional lane.
For now, Grande is keeping the mystery intact. But with the first single only days away and a full album landing this summer, the Petal era has officially started blooming.
