In a new interview with the Associated Press, Brendan Fraser said he’s been waiting 20 years to make the version of The Mummy he’s always dreamed of. Earlier this month, Variety confirmed that Universal is officially developing a fourth installment with Fraser back as Rick O’Connell with Radio Silence duo Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett set to direct.
“The one I wanted to make was never made,” Fraser said, reflecting on the franchise that launched in 1999 and gave us a bisexual awakening and 3 blocks of cinema: The Mummy, The Mummy Returns, and The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor.
“I’ve been waiting 20 years for this call,” he said. “Now? It’s time to give the fans what they want.” Translation: the chaos, the camp, the sexual tension on screen? It’s coming home.
Rachel Weisz Is BACK — Rejoice, Bisexual Nation
In addition to Fraser returning, Rachel Weisz is confirmed to reprise her role as Evy Carnahan — the brilliant, bookish, occasionally reincarnated Egyptologist who helped launch a thousand bisexual identity crises.
Weisz skipped the third movie, but she’ll be stepping back into Evy’s boots for the upcoming sequel. For many fans, this alone is enough reason to pre-order a ticket.
Radio Silence Takes the Reins
Directors Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett — aka Radio Silence — are the duo behind Ready or Not and the 2022 revival of Scream, making them the ideal team for a franchise that has always thrived on adventure, humor, and hot people running from curses.
Fraser previously said he’d return if “someone came up with the right conceit.” Well, apparently someone did. And it wasn’t 2017’s Tom Cruise reboot, which Fraser politely noted lacked one crucial element: fun.
“It is hard to make that movie,” Fraser told Variety, “but the ingredient we had going for our Mummy… was fun. That was what was lacking in [Tom Cruise’s] incarnation.”
So… What’s This One About?
Universal hasn’t revealed the plot yet. But, sources are saying:
- It’s not a reboot.
- It will ignore Tomb of the Dragon Emperor completely, which many fans consider a blessing.
No word on who else might return, but the community is already manifesting:
- John Hannah as chaotic brother Jonathan
- Oded Fehr as Ardeth Bay, the desert warrior who confirmed half of Tumblr’s sexuality in 2001
Adventure Movies Are Back — And They’re Hot
Fraser and Weisz stepping back into this world after two decades? It feels tailor-made for the exact audience who grew up watching them dodge booby traps while developing inexplicable crushes on both leads simultaneously.
No release date has been announced yet.
