The world of Bridgerton has always been built on sweeping romance, longing glances, and complicated love stories. But in the seasons ahead, the series is preparing to explore something new for the franchise: its first leading queer relationship.

The evolving dynamic between Francesca Bridgerton and Michaela Stirling is expected to take center stage in a future season, though it has not yet been confirmed whether their story will lead Season 5 or Season 6.

While fans have already seen hints of their chemistry on screen, the show is deliberately taking its time to build their relationship from friendship into something deeper.

Actress Masali Baduza, who plays Michaela, shared her excitement with Gayety about bringing that kind of story into the Bridgerton universe.

“I was so excited. Just auditioning for the part, I was just like, ‘Oh, this is going to be really good,’” Baduza said. “I’ve not yet seen a story like this take center stage yet, so I’m excited for when that happens.

“And yeah, I’m just so excited to show some woman-loving-woman. You know what I’m saying?” Yes. Yes, we do.

Where Francesca and John’s Story Stands Right Now

Before Michaela fully entered the picture this season, Francesca’s love story began with John Stirling.

In the series, Francesca forms a quiet but deeply meaningful relationship with John, played by Victor Alli. Their connection stands apart from many of the whirlwind romances in the Ton. Instead of dramatic sparks, their bond grows from shared understanding and calm companionship.

By the end of the current storyline, the two have built a relationship grounded in comfort and mutual respect, and they eventually marry and travel to Scotland together.

In Julia Quinn’s novel When He Was Wicked, John dies unexpectedly, leaving Francesca widowed and forever changed by the loss. His death becomes the emotional catalyst that eventually leads her toward another love story.

That second love story is where Michaela enters.

The show has already begun laying the groundwork for that emotional shift by introducing Michaela into Francesca and John’s world.

Actor Hannah Dodd explained that viewers will begin to see how Michaela’s presence complicates Francesca’s life.

“So obviously Francesca and John have been working on the pinnacles of it all and getting the information that they need,” Dodd said. “And I think they’ve got themselves in a really nice place and feeling very, very confident and comfortable within their relationship.

“And then this one shows up.

“I think Francesca knows that it’s going to cause some chaos and there’s definitely some confronting feelings that are going to come up for her.”

A Friendship That Changes Everything

For now, Francesca and Michaela’s story begins as a friendship.

That dynamic reflects the structure of the original books, where Francesca forms a close bond with Michael Stirling while John is still alive. The show reimagines that character as Michaela, transforming the eventual romance into a queer love story.

Baduza and Dodd also broke down the last few episodes of season 4, where these two women continue to challenge and complement one another.

“I think people will be surprised,” Baduza said. “Because there’s a dramatic shift that happens between the two of them.”

Dodd echoed that sentiment, explaining that their personalities naturally create both tension and connection.

“I think they’re two women that are very different to each other,” she said. “And I think that can cause conflict and it also can be exactly what each other needs and we explore all of that.

“So yeah, we’re excited for people to get to know the two of them together.”

Showrunner Jess Brownell on Building Their Story

Showrunner Jess Brownell told Gayety that the writers are intentionally grounding Francesca and Michaela’s relationship in friendship first, mirroring the emotional structure of Quinn’s original novel while expanding it for television.

“One of my favorite scenes is the scene in the study where Francesca is a little bit drunk and they start out at odds, but then they come to a place of understanding,” Brownell said.

“And Francesca’s wearing icy blue and Michaela’s wearing fiery red. It kind of says it all.”

Brownell explained that the creative team wanted the early stages of their relationship to feel rooted in connection rather than immediate romance.

“For us this season in paying homage to the book, it was really about getting Fran and Michaela to a place of developing a beautiful platonic friendship,” she said.

“That’s something that the character of Michael in When He Was Wicked and Francesca share while John is still alive.”

“And even though their relationship does later become incredibly passionate, I think like Pen and Colin, having a relationship start in friendship is a great place to start.”

However, Brownell teased that their relationship may already be heading into complicated territory.

“I don’t know that that friendship will necessarily continue now that Michaela has bailed on her,” she added.

“But at least they were able to find some common ground before that happened.”

A Major Shift From Julia Quinn’s Books

The Francesca and Michaela storyline represents one of the most significant changes the series has made from Julia Quinn’s original Bridgerton novels.

In the books, Francesca ultimately falls in love with Michael Stirling, John’s cousin, after years of shared grief and friendship following John’s death.

The show reimagines that character as Michaela, creating a same-sex romance that will become the franchise’s first leading queer love story.

The creative team has already begun exploring queer identity elsewhere in the series, including Benedict Bridgerton’s evolving self-understanding.

As Brownell explained, the goal is to show characters embracing their full identities without making queerness a source of tragedy.

“Across the series, we make a point of the idea that true love requires people to be their true selves,” Brownell said.

“And I think that’s really true in life.”

A Love Story Still to Come

While Francesca and Michaela’s eventual romance is still unfolding, Bridgerton is clearly laying the emotional groundwork now.

The series is introducing the characters to one another, allowing tensions to simmer, and building the foundation for a story that could redefine the Ton.

For Baduza, the most exciting part is still ahead.

“Meeting Hannah, I was just like, ‘Oh, this is going to be really special,’” she said. “It’s going to be so easy. She’s so wonderful to work with.

“And yeah, I’m really looking forward to it.”
