Demi Lovato is officially bringing back one of the internet’s most beloved memes, Poot. The “Fast” singer, 34, posted a Halloween photo on Instagram channeling the eerie alter ego that first went viral nearly a decade ago.
Decked out in pale makeup and moody lighting, Demi recreated the infamous angle that made Poot Lovato a Tumblr legend. “happy halloween and happy one week of intd!!! been so locked in this era thought i’d let pootvato out 🔒🤍,” she captioned the post, nodding to her new album, It’s Not That Deep.
The Rise of Poot
For those unfamiliar, Poot Lovato emerged in 2015 when a fan shared a washed-out photo online, joking it was Demi’s secret twin sister “locked in a basement her whole life.” The internet ran wild, and the meme quickly became a pop culture touchstone.
“At first, it actually sucked because I thought it was a real picture of me,” Demi told Harper’s BAZAAR. “I was like, ‘Oh, no. That’s a really bad angle.’ But Poot was photoshopped. Later, I felt better about it because I realized that wasn’t my face.”
Over time, she’s grown to see the humor. “It was definitely weird when it went viral,” Demi admitted. “It’s really funny to look back on.”

This Halloween moment coincides with a creative surge for Demi, who recently released her ninth studio album, It’s Not That Deep. Demi credited her husband, Jordan Lutes, whom she married in May, for shaping the album’s upbeat vibe. “Falling in love with him changed my sound,” she said. “I was like, I’m gonna go make another rock album and as I was making it I was like, wait, I’m really happy.”
