Harry Styles is back on the dance floor, and his latest music video has fans talking about more than his waltz.
The singer released the video for “Coming Up Roses” on Oct. 26, bringing the ballad from his fourth album, Kiss All the Time. Disco, Occasionally, to an old-fashioned dance hall. Throughout the video, Styles moves between partners, sharing the floor with everyone from a bride to a man wearing a neck brace.
But a shift between light and darkness has caught some viewers’ attention, who are sharing their own interpretations of what the imagery could mean.
A Dance Between Light and Darkness
In one sequence, Styles dances with a woman in the light before the scene shifts to show him dancing with a man in the darkness. When the room becomes visible again, he lets go, and the man is hurt.
Some fans have read the contrast as a metaphor for a relationship that can only exist in private. In that interpretation, the darkness offers a place for connection, while the return to the light brings the pressure of being seen.
One viewer shared on Reddit that they kept thinking about Styles dancing with women in the light and men in the dark. Another suggested the darkness could represent the closet.
For some fans, the scene feels especially poignant alongside the lyric “It’s only me and you.” They see the moment as reflecting the vulnerability that comes with loving someone when being open about that love doesn’t feel possible.
Fans Are Also Reading Into the Ending
The video closes with Styles sitting alone and eating a cookie as the other guests leave. It’s a quiet moment, but some viewers have found an emotional meaning in it, too.
One possible reading asks whether his character ends up alone because there’s no one to love, or because he doesn’t feel free to stand publicly beside the person he would choose. Through that lens, the ending reflects the loneliness that can come with keeping a relationship hidden.
Other fans have interpreted the changing dance partners more broadly, seeing them as a reflection of the different connections people experience throughout their lives. Some relationships are comforting, some are uncertain and others can leave a lasting impression, even after the dance is over.
These are fan interpretations. Styles has not publicly confirmed that the video tells a specific queer love story, and viewers may connect with the imagery in different ways.
A Couple’s Love Story Makes a Cameo
The video also features a sweet real-life romance. Fans spotted a couple near the end who got engaged during Styles’ performance of “Coming Up Roses” at one of his Madison Square Garden shows earlier in October.
The appearance gives the couple another memory tied to the song, this time in its official music video.
How ‘Coming Up Roses’ Started
“Coming Up Roses” didn’t begin as a song about a dance hall. Styles told Zane Lowe he initially tried to write it as a Christmas song, but the idea lasted only a couple of lines before the track went in another direction.
He called the finished ballad “one of my favorite things I’ve ever done” and described writing it as a process of discovery.
Now, fans are finding their own meanings in it, too.
