Target Continues to Faces Backlash After Scaling Back Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Programs

0

Retail giant Target is facing mounting criticism, including calls for a boycott, after announcing it would scale back some of its diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs. The backlash comes after the company revealed plans to eliminate hiring goals for minority employees and disband an executive committee dedicated to racial justice.

The announcement, made just four days after President Donald Trump’s inauguration, has ignited anger, particularly from civil rights leaders and activists. The company emphasized the importance of “staying in step with the evolving external landscape,” a reference to the shifting political environment under the new Republican administration, which has frequently criticized DEI initiatives.

Since taking office, Trump has signed several executive orders aimed at curbing DEI efforts across the country. Among the most notable was an order to remove DEI training from the U.S. military. On January 25, Trump also publicly declared that he had eliminated “the woke crap” from government, including policies that support marginalized groups in the workplace.

Despite these broader trends, few companies have experienced the level of public outcry that Target is currently facing. The company’s stance on DEI initiatives has been a major part of its public identity, especially since the 2020 murder of George Floyd, which occurred in Minneapolis, where Target is headquartered. The company has long positioned itself as a progressive brand, supporting various social justice causes, including LGBTQ+ rights.

In 2014, Target publicly supported the legalization of gay marriage before it became law nationwide. Additionally, it became one of the first major retailers to allow transgender employees and customers to use the bathroom that corresponds with their gender identity. In recent years, Target has also been known for its extensive Pride merchandise collections.

However, the company faced significant backlash over its Pride merchandise in 2023, and it subsequently scaled back its 2024 Pride collection in response. Despite these challenges, the announcement to curtail DEI programs has sparked an even more intense backlash, with some accusing the company of abandoning its progressive values.

Among the critics are Anne and Lucy Dayton, the daughters of one of Target’s co-founders. The sisters publicly expressed their disappointment with the decision, calling it a “betrayal.” In a letter published in the Los Angeles Times, they expressed their shock and dismay at the company’s retreat from DEI initiatives. “By cowering, Target and others are undermining the very principles that have made their companies a success,” they wrote.

Dr. Jamal Bryant, a prominent Atlanta-based pastor and civil rights leader, has called for a 40-day boycott of Target, scheduled to begin in March. Bryant, an activist and author, has also launched an online petition urging Black consumers to join the boycott. The petition highlights the recent retreat from DEI initiatives by major corporations, singling out Target for its decision.

“Target’s actions have been the greatest insult to our community,” the petition reads. “We cannot stand idly by while they erase years of progress in the fight for equality.”

In addition to the boycott, Dr. Bryant’s petition encourages Black consumers to refrain from making purchases at Target and to divest from any Target stock holdings. The petition draws on the philosophy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who advocated for economic restraint as a means of protest. Bryant’s campaign seeks to remind companies that social justice efforts and DEI programs are vital to the well-being of marginalized communities.

Target’s move to scale back its DEI initiatives is part of a broader trend among major corporations, many of which have faced pressure from conservative groups and lawmakers to reduce or eliminate diversity programs. These programs have become a point of contention in the political culture wars, with opponents accusing them of being divisive or “woke.”

While Target has stated that it remains committed to fostering an inclusive environment, the company’s decision to modify its DEI programs has left many questioning its commitment to social justice. Critics argue that the company is sacrificing the values it once championed in an effort to appease political forces that oppose diversity efforts.

As the debate over DEI intensifies, Target will likely continue to face scrutiny from both its supporters and detractors. The company’s actions could have long-lasting effects on its brand image, especially as it navigates a politically charged environment that is increasingly dividing public opinion on issues of race, equity, and inclusion.

The ongoing backlash serves as a reminder of the powerful role that consumer sentiment and activism play in shaping corporate policies, especially when it comes to issues of social justice and equality. With calls for boycotts and petitions circulating, Target will need to carefully consider how it moves forward in its DEI efforts to balance its business interests with the expectations of its diverse customer base.

Crunch Fitness West Hollywood Closes Men’s Steam Room for Good After Sexual Misconduct Complaints

0

Crunch Fitness West Hollywood has permanently closed its men’s steam room following ongoing complaints about inappropriate sexual conduct by members.

The announcement came this morning, when the general manager posted a sign reading: “Steam Room is Permanently Closed,” directing members to the front desk for further inquiries.

The gym, located in the city of Los Angeles, first attracted attention in late January when it posted a sign stating that the steam room was temporarily closed due to “inappropriate conduct” and that its reopening would be reviewed the week of January 27. By January 31, the sign was updated, noting that no reopening date had been set.

The steam room reopened on February 3 after being closed for nearly two weeks. However, the decision to resume service followed pressure from members who threatened to cancel their memberships and demanded discounts, claiming the steam room was a key feature that led them to join the gym.

“We do not tolerate inappropriate behavior in our facility, and we will enforce our policy,” stated a sign posted at the gym warning that anyone caught engaging in sexual activity would face immediate membership termination.

Sean Renzetti, the manager of Crunch West Hollywood, did not provide a formal statement, but he addressed the issue on social media, saying, “If you are participating in sexual activity in our public space, which is illegal, I will terminate your membership immediately. I am gay, so let’s not make it OK because it’s a ‘gay thing.’”

The closure has sparked criticism from members, particularly those who viewed the steam room as an essential part of their gym experience. Jason Thompson, the founder of a health retreat called Authenticity, expressed concerns over a perceived double standard, pointing out that similar inappropriate behavior occurs in the men’s shower area but has not been treated the same way.

Thompson said gym management had responded by explaining that the showers were required for hygiene purposes and were a necessary facility for members. He also noted that the closure impacted the value of his membership, as he had specifically joined the gym for access to the steam room, which he regularly used after yoga, stretching, and cardio.

“I signed up for this gym because of their steam room and have not been able to use it for a week. I’m now not getting what I paid for,” Thompson said.

This isn’t the first time Crunch Fitness West Hollywood has addressed inappropriate behavior in its steam room. In January 2022, the gym posted a similar warning in the men’s locker room, humorously telling members to choose “literally anywhere else” for sexual activity.

As of the time of publication, Crunch Fitness’ corporate office has not responded to requests for comment on the closure or its policies.

The gym’s handling of the steam room issue has raised questions about how such spaces are managed in gyms that cater to diverse communities. Despite these challenges, Crunch Fitness continues to operate in the highly competitive Los Angeles fitness market.

New Report Claims Russia Allegedly Creating Database to Track LGBTQ+ Citizens

0

Russia’s government is reportedly building a sweeping electronic database to track LGBTQ+ citizens, a claim made by an independent Russian news outlet. According to Meduza, a Latvia-based independent news organization that reports in Russian, sources from Russia’s Interior Ministry say the government has been planning the system for some time.

The report claims that the database is being designed to register and monitor LGBTQ+ individuals, particularly those associated with the “international LGBT movement,” which was officially labeled as “extremist” by Russian authorities in 2023. Sources told Meduza that the planned database would be a “large-scale” system aimed at collecting and storing personal data on members of the LGBTQ+ community.

This development follows a recent surge in the enforcement of Russia’s anti-propaganda laws targeting LGBTQ+ people. In the past few months, the government has escalated its crackdown on LGBTQ+ rights, resulting in various incidents where individuals and groups have faced legal repercussions. Notably, bar staff and venue owners have been jailed, and over 50 club-goers were detained during one event. The government has also forced platforms like Duolingo to remove inclusive content, and even children’s media like My Little Pony has been reclassified as 18+ due to its perceived promotion of LGBTQ+ themes.

In one high-profile case, a man was fined for making a joke about “starting” the international LGBTQ+ rights movement in January. In December, another man accused of operating an LGBTQ+ travel agency was found dead in his jail cell under suspicious circumstances.

Meduza’s sources also indicated that police records have been maintained since the Russian Supreme Court ruled in favor of treating LGBTQ+ advocacy as extremist. Dmitry Chukreev, a member of the ruling United Russia party, confirmed that police records are being kept on members of the LGBTQ+ community. “Everyone is being recorded and put on record,” he said.

In addition to the LGBTQ+ database, Russian officials are reportedly considering the creation of a public registry for sex workers, which would allow individuals to “check” others, such as friends or potential partners. The registry would also include administrative violations, such as fines for “gay propaganda,” which has been criminalized under recent laws.

While the database plans are said to be moving forward, there are reports that the Russian government may lack the necessary resources, such as funds and personnel, to fully implement and maintain the system due to the financial strain caused by the ongoing war in Ukraine.

Meduza’s report also cited statements from Russian officials who view the LGBTQ+ community in a highly negative light. According to the sources, officials have referred to the LGBTQ+ movement as a “network of paramilitary groups” and accused them of promoting an “open gender war.” In this narrative, LGBTQ+ activists are described as engaging in “dehumanization” and even “devil worship.”

Venues catering to the LGBTQ+ community have reportedly faced increased scrutiny from Russian security forces. One queer venue told Meduza that security personnel had copied the entire database from their computer system, which was used to track reservations. Other venues have reported that police have taken mouth swabs and fingerprints from event attendees and demanded that they state their registered address on camera.

The creation of such a database, if true, marks a significant escalation in the Russian government’s efforts to suppress LGBTQ+ rights and monitor individuals in the community. It also comes amid broader concerns about increasing state surveillance and the erosion of civil liberties in Russia.

The situation highlights the continuing challenges faced by LGBTQ+ people in Russia, where discrimination and persecution are common due to the government’s strict stance on LGBTQ+ issues. Many activists and international human rights groups have condemned Russia’s actions, calling them a violation of fundamental human rights.

As the situation unfolds, it remains unclear how the government plans to execute and enforce the proposed LGBTQ+ database. However, the implications for privacy, freedom of expression, and the safety of LGBTQ+ individuals in Russia are deeply concerning.

International watchdogs and advocates continue to monitor the situation closely, urging Russia to respect the rights and dignity of its LGBTQ+ citizens. The global community has expressed growing alarm at the increasing repression of LGBTQ+ rights in Russia, with many calling for further sanctions and diplomatic pressure on the Kremlin to halt its discriminatory practices.

The report from Meduza adds to the mounting evidence of systemic discrimination against LGBTQ+ individuals in Russia, underscoring the urgency of continued international efforts to address these human rights violations.

Andrew McCaskill’s Career Hacks for Queer BIPOC Navigating DEI Rollbacks

0

As diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives face cutbacks at major companies like Amazon, Meta, and McDonald’s, (via Axios) professionals from marginalized communities are increasingly anxious about their career futures.

The wave of rollbacks has left many queer individuals, Black professionals, and people of color questioning their job security and opportunities. Recent LinkedIn studies show that 69% of LGBTQIA+ professionals feel limited by the current political and economic climate, with one in five fearing job instability if they change positions. The data also reveals that 70% of LGBTQ+ professionals and 64% of Black professionals plan to seek new jobs in 2025, but over half say the job market has become significantly more difficult in the past year.

Networking remains a key strategy for overcoming these challenges. LinkedIn research indicates that professionals are four times more likely to secure a job at a company where they have an existing connection. However, nearly 45% of Black professionals and 50% of LGBTQ+ professionals wish they had better tools to assess how their skills match potential roles.

With companies scaling back DEI programs, marginalized professionals are left to navigate these difficulties on their own. This situation underscores the need for strategic career planning and resourcefulness, says Andrew McCaskill, a LinkedIn career expert and communications executive focused on empowering marginalized communities.

McCaskill, the creator of the newsletter The Black Guy in Marketing, provides tailored career advice to professionals of color, women, and LGBTQ+ individuals. His advocacy for diversity in media and marketing helped bring LGBTQ+ audience measurement to Nielsen, ensuring better representation in TV, radio, and streaming analytics. Recognized as a diversity leader by Fortune magazine, McCaskill has also served as a global executive sponsor for Nielsen’s LGBTQ+ employee business groups. In 2023, Nike named him a #BeTrue Brand Ambassador to foster discussions about LGBTQ+ inclusion in sports.

In light of the uncertainty in today’s job market, McCaskill urges professionals to take charge of their careers. “For gay folks, the cavalry is not coming for you,” he says. “That’s a tough statement, but once you accept that truth, the next step is taking your career progression into your own hands.”

As DEI programs and employee resource groups disappear, McCaskill encourages professionals to create a personalized career strategy that prioritizes stability, growth, and alignment with personal values. “Your network, your skills, and using technology are going to be the pathways for people — especially from marginalized groups — not just to survive but to thrive,” he explains.

McCaskill highlights LinkedIn as a vital tool for navigating the changing job market. He advises job seekers to maximize their profiles by listing all their skills, even those they might not enjoy but that enhance marketability. Tools like LinkedIn’s Job Collections can help professionals filter companies based on diversity commitments, paid leave policies, and work-life balance — as long as those companies still uphold those values.

Additionally, McCaskill encourages users to turn on LinkedIn’s “Open to Work” feature in stealth mode, making them visible to recruiters without notifying their current employers. “Sixty nine million companies use LinkedIn as their primary tool to source talent — don’t sleep on that,” he says. He also recommends setting Job Alerts to target specific industries, roles, and locations, helping to streamline the job search process.

Outside of LinkedIn, McCaskill emphasizes the importance of building a diverse support network. “Our non-Hispanic white counterparts can be great resources for decoding workplace culture, and straight colleagues can offer valuable insights,” he notes. A diverse network provides confidence, course correction, and context, especially when preparing for interviews, salary negotiations, or understanding industry norms.

Despite the opposition to DEI initiatives, McCaskill’s advice offers a roadmap for marginalized professionals to not only survive but also thrive in an evolving job market. By honing their skills, leveraging technology, and developing strategic networks, professionals can take control of their careers and continue to grow amid these challenges.

McCaskill also points to emerging job sectors that professionals should consider as they seek new opportunities, with further details available through LinkedIn News.

Sit Down For This One, Lady Gaga May Have a Sequel to The ‘Telephone’ Music Video with Beyoncé

0

Little monsters everywhere, Lady Gaga just took a lie detector test and said there may finally be a continuation to the iconic music video with Beyoncé.

Sitting down with Vanity Fair for the lie detector test, the musician hinted that there may be a potential follow up music video with the “Crazy in Love” songstress. When asked directly during the interview if it also involved queen herself, Gaga played coy with a simple ‘maybe.’

However, when prompted on when this follow up may come up, she stated simply ‘I don’t know” all while being truthful.

While celebrating the premiere of Gaga: The Chromatica Ball in Los Angeles in May of 2024, Lady Gaga was asked if she would consider creating a sequel to her iconic 2009 duet with Beyoncé, “Telephone,” after fans widely expressed their desire for a follow-up.

In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, the 38-year-old singer responded, “Whenever Beyoncé calls, I’d like to pick up the phone.” The comment has reignited speculation about the possibility of a sequel to the collaboration, which debuted on Gaga’s The Fame Monster album.

The song, which earned widespread acclaim, won an MTV Video Music Award for Best Collaboration and was nominated for a Grammy. Since its release, “Telephone” has remained a fan favorite, and earlier this year, rumors about a possible sequel began circulating when Beyoncé teased a new project. In February of that same year, the 42-year-old singer shared a trailer for her album Cowboy Carter, which featured visual similarities to the music video for “Telephone.” Fans quickly noticed the connection, including an introduction where Beyoncé is shown driving a yellow cab through the desert, with the passenger seat not fully visible.

This imagery immediately reminded fans of the iconic scene in the Telephone video, where Beyoncé drives a bright yellow P–y Wagon (a reference to Kill Bill: Volume 1) through the desert while picking up Lady Gaga, who had just been released from prison. The video famously ends with the phrase “to be continued,” leaving the door open for speculation about a potential sequel.

Though Gaga didn’t confirm a follow-up to the song, her playful response to the question suggests she remains open to the idea. As for the rest of her music career, Gaga shared that she’s constantly working on new material. “I truly live and breathe it,” she told Entertainment Tonight. “I just can’t wait to give it to the fans.”

As fans eagerly await her upcoming seventh studio album ‘Mayhem’, fans are bopping out to the single ‘Abracadabra’ nonstop.

Five Arrested in Death of Transgender Man in New York; Investigation Ongoing

0

New York State Police have arrested five individuals in connection with the disappearance and death of a 24-year-old transgender man from Minnesota, authorities said. The victim, identified as Sam Nordquist, was reported missing earlier this week.

The investigation began Sunday after police received a welfare check request from Nordquist’s family. Officials confirmed Thursday that human remains believed to be those of Nordquist were discovered in a field in Yates County, New York, approximately 50 miles south of Rochester.

The case is being treated as a homicide, with evidence suggesting Nordquist was the victim of a criminal act, according to Lynnea Crane, a spokesperson for the New York State Police. During a press conference on Friday, Crane said that authorities have not ruled out the possibility that the case could be a hate crime.

“Our investigation has revealed a deeply disturbing pattern of abuse that ultimately resulted in Sam’s tragic death,” said Capt. Kelly Swift of the New York State Police. Swift, who has served in law enforcement for over two decades, described the crime as “one of the most horrific” she had ever encountered.

Investigators indicated that Nordquist endured prolonged physical and psychological abuse at the hands of multiple individuals, though specific details have not been released due to the ongoing investigation.

Authorities learned that Nordquist had been staying at Patty’s Lodge in Hopewell, New York, with one of the suspects. According to police, evidence suggests that Nordquist was subjected to continuous physical abuse between December 2024 and February 2025.

The five suspects arrested in connection with the case are identified as Precious Arzuaga, 38; Jennifer A. Quijano, 30; Kyle Sage, 33; Patrick A. Goodwin, 30; and Emily Motyka, 19. All have been charged with second-degree murder with depraved indifference. The suspects were arraigned and remanded to the Ontario County Jail on Friday.

Ontario County District Attorney James Ritts confirmed that the suspects are being held without bail. He also stated that a preliminary hearing is scheduled, and he anticipates grand jury action in the near future.

The relationship between the suspects and Nordquist is still under investigation. Police indicated that Nordquist’s body was transported to Yates County in an attempt to conceal the crime. The Monroe County Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct an autopsy to determine the exact cause and manner of death.

Nordquist, originally from Minnesota, had last been in contact with his family at the end of January. He had traveled to New York in September 2024 and was last seen in early February. Investigators executed multiple search warrants at Patty’s Lodge during the investigation.

Police described the circumstances surrounding Nordquist’s death as “beyond depraved,” with Ritts calling it the worst homicide investigation his office has ever handled. “No human being should have to endure what Sam endured,” he said during a press conference on Friday.

Several members of the Rochester City Council expressed their condolences to Nordquist’s family and affirmed their commitment to supporting the transgender and LGBTQIA+ community. “Our Trans and LGBTQIA+ residents are, and have always been, integral to the fabric of our communities,” the council members stated. “We reaffirm our commitment to protecting Trans rights, ensuring safety for all, and wish to make clear that you belong—fully, openly, and without fear.”

BBC Dismisses Rumors That ‘Doctor Who’ and Ncuti Gatwa Are Facing Cancellation Over ‘Woke’ Backlash

0

The BBC has firmly denied rumors suggesting that Doctor Who and its lead star, Ncuti Gatwa, are facing cancellation due to alleged “wokery” in its storylines. The broadcaster called recent tabloid reports “incorrect,” dismissing claims that the long-running sci-fi series is in danger of being axed.

The speculation arose following an article published by The Sun on 17 February, which claimed that Gatwa, who made his debut as the 15th Doctor in December 2023, was planning to quit the show after two seasons. The report also suggested that fans were upset over the inclusion of progressive themes in the storylines, which it referred to as “wokery.”

Despite these claims, the BBC emphasized that Doctor Who remains a key part of its programming. In response to the article, a BBC spokesperson said: “This story is incorrect, Doctor Who has not been shelved. As we have previously stated, the decision on season 3 will be made after season 2 airs. The deal with Disney+ was for 26 episodes, and exactly half of those still have to transmit. And as for the rest, we never comment on the Doctor and future storylines.”

The tabloid article also asserted that the show was facing “abysmal ratings” and that there was backlash regarding the show’s inclusive themes, despite Doctor Who’s longstanding commitment to showcasing queer and diverse storylines. However, in an interview from 2024, the BBC revealed that Doctor Who remains one of the most-watched programs on the BBC iPlayer, and the show continues to be the top drama for viewers under 35.

Gatwa’s Resilience Amid Backlash

Gatwa, 32, has faced some vocal criticism since assuming the role of the Doctor. In particular, some fans have expressed disappointment with the series’ emphasis on inclusivity, a feature that has been a part of the show’s DNA long before Gatwa’s tenure. However, the actor, who made history as the first Black and openly queer Doctor, has been open about his experience with both support and backlash.

Despite facing homophobic and racist attacks, Gatwa has consistently praised the warmth and love he has received from fans, sharing how they’ve made him feel embraced by the Doctor Who community.

“I wouldn’t be the only Black lead that’s taken over a sci-fi franchise that would have received that sort of treatment,” Gatwa told Vanity Fair in November 2024. “Unfortunately, those are voices that exist in sci-fi fandoms – but they’re not the only voices.”

Gatwa further described how Doctor Who fans have made him feel like part of a “big nerd family” since stepping into the role. He highlighted how, even during difficult circumstances—such as shooting in extreme weather conditions—there are always dedicated fans waiting outside the studio.

“I just remember feeling a lot of warmth and love, being embraced into a big nerd family. When we’re shooting Doctor Who, there are fans outside the studio or on location every single time, be it at 4am, be it minus-12 degrees,” he said.

Looking Past the Negativity

While acknowledging that racism and homophobia are still real issues, Gatwa expressed his focus on the positives that have come from his time on Doctor Who. He’s used to navigating criticism, but he chooses to concentrate on the love and support that surrounds him.

“I don’t want to invalidate the very real thing that is racism, homophobia. I don’t act as if they don’t exist or they don’t affect me. They do. But I try to pay it no mind and look at the many, many positives that came from joining the Whoniverse,” Gatwa said.

The actor’s resilience and positivity seem to be paying off, as Doctor Who continues to captivate audiences worldwide with its inclusive storytelling and bold new direction under Gatwa’s leadership. The show remains a symbol of diversity, creativity, and inclusion, resonating with a new generation of viewers.

As the BBC continues to champion Doctor Who and its future, fans can look forward to more thrilling adventures with Gatwa as the Doctor, exploring new stories, characters, and galaxies.

Potential Gay Scenes and Incest? What’s Going On With ‘The White Lotus’ Season 3?

0

The White Lotus is back with a shocking season three that has many wondering how much of a gay storyline viewers will be getting this time around.

Looking at the cast for this new installation for the franchise on HBO, cast members Carrie Coon and Aimee Lou Wood grace the screens alongside others like Natasha Rothwell as Belinda back for another stay at the infamous resort chain.

As far as other members of the cast, many are focused in on none other than Saxon played by Patrick Schwarzenegger and Lochlan played by Sam Nivola.

The two brothers, one of the many dysfunctional groups staying at the hotel, are rich, with the older one with a bit of an arrogant attitude.

Trying to impress his younger brother Lochlan by showing him how to flirt to even teaching him how to embrace his manhood, viewers get a glimpse on how far this character is willing to go to assert his dominance.

While initially going to share a room with his sister, Saxon declares that they should instead share a room together as the boys of the family.

Later in the episode while the two are getting ready for bed in their room, Saxon can be seen shirtless proclaiming to his brother on how to get what he wants in life. From there after a brief pause, Saxon grabs a tablet and ponders on how he will be jerking off in the room next to his younger brother.

After the awkward and long, dramatic pause while the two look at each other, fans sensed the sexual tension between the two brothers.

Fans are in shock over the sexual tension in the scene and people are now assuming that there will be an incest storyline between Saxon and Lochlan. One person tweeted: “Please tell me there’s not an incest storyline.” Another wrote: “what the hell is happening with these brothers on the white lotus.”

However, others praised the TV show for exploring uncomfortable themes. A fan tweeted: “White Lotus season 3 starting with gay incest, bitter middle aged white women and British people oh I’m LIVING.”

Patrick Schwarzenegger, who plays Saxon, has teased that things get even more “uncomfortable” and Sam Nivola, who plays Lochlan, has confirmed that he has a nude scene.

Speaking at The White Lotus press conference, Patrick said: “There are some uncomfortable conversations between us in the bed that are a little weird to show in front of your family. Episodes 5 and 6, there will be some times that I take some bathroom breaks from the family, or maybe I won’t watch that episode.”

Meanwhile, Sam spoke about his first nude scene and on screen kiss. He said: “Of course, that comes along with a lot of fear and anxiety [but] there’s a few people that I would trust more with footage of my buttocks [than creator Mike White]. He made us feel so comfortable.”

It’s not clear how far the series will be pushing not only the gay agenda this season, but we will see how family dynamics play out.
