When Michelle Buteau learned that Survival of the Thickest had been renewed for a third season, the excitement came with bittersweet news: it would also be the show’s last.
Rather than leaving Mavis Beaumont’s future open-ended, the creative team had the rare opportunity to intentionally bring her journey to a satisfying close.
“It was really a gift knowing that it was going to be the last season,” Buteau tells Gayety. “Oftentimes in television, you try to make the best season possible for a pickup, and then it’s impossible not to think, ‘Oh man, did I do a good enough job? Is that why it wasn’t picked up?’ But truly that wasn’t this.”
Instead, Buteau and her writers were able to ask one important question: What does Mavis truly want next?
Mavis faces her biggest decisions yet
As the final season begins, Mavis is thriving professionally. New opportunities continue to open doors in the fashion world, but success at work forces her to think more seriously about the life she wants beyond her career.
Without giving away where the season ultimately lands, the final episodes find Mavis confronting deeply personal questions about family, commitment and the future she hopes to build. Those choices ripple through her relationships, leading to some of the series’ most emotional conversations yet.
For Buteau, those storylines were never meant to be solely about one life milestone.
“One of the themes that I love… the way you do one thing is the way you do everything,” she says. “If you’re going to stick up for yourself in this work environment, then you also have to advocate for yourself with your friends, with your doctor, with your partner.”
That philosophy carries through Mavis’ journey as she begins exploring what starting a family could look like.
“I feel like there’s this thing that happens when we say we want something in life, that we’re afraid to stand 10 toes down in our power of what we want because we leave ourselves vulnerable to opinions,” Buteau says.
She hopes audiences see themselves in Mavis, even if her specific circumstances differ from their own.
“You can take Mavis wanting kids out of it and then put literally anything else in there,” she says. “‘I want to live in this body. I want to live in this neighborhood. I want to have this job. I want to date this person. I don’t want to date this person.’ Whatever that is, whatever you want, whatever you need to feed your soul in this lifetime, it’s important for you to at least try so you know.”
The season also touches on the realities of navigating health care and the barriers many people encounter as they try to build the lives they envision.
“How come access is so limited for very basic wants and needs for us?” Buteau says. “At the end of the day, especially in this show, all we have is each other, so love on each other.”
Chosen family remains the heart of the series
Even as Mavis’ world expands, Survival of the Thickest never loses sight of the friendships that have anchored the series from the beginning.
Her chosen family continues to show up through life’s biggest milestones, celebrations and difficult decisions, reminding viewers that support doesn’t have to come from traditional places.
“It feels like sometimes my friends feel like a Cindy Lauper video in the ’80s where she’s just like going down the street and grabbing people from stores,” Buteau says. “I don’t know in what world would Khalil be friends with Jade, but we all come together in this moment and we hold each other down and lift each other up.”
That sense of community, she says, reflects the best parts of New York City itself.
A farewell packed with memorable guest stars
The final season also welcomes an impressive lineup of guest stars, with returning favorite Peppermint joined by Wanda Sykes, Ashley Graham, Jenna Lyons, Kandi Burruss, LaQuan Smith and more.
“So many people were like, ‘I love your show. I’d love to do your show,'” Buteau says. “I’m like, ‘The time is now, honey. The time is now. We’re not coming back. Please, can we make this work?'”
Their appearances also reflect how much Mavis’ own world has grown over three seasons.
“Mavis is upgrading,” Buteau says. “She’s upgrading her game. She’s in different spaces. She’s meeting different people.”
Michelle Buteau’s Pride message
As Survival of the Thickest wraps up during Pride Month, Buteau hopes viewers leave with the same feeling that has guided the series all along: believe in yourself, embrace your community and don’t let fear stop you from asking for the life you want.
“You are enough,” she says. “You are always enough.”
She also encourages people not to let perfection get in the way of growth.
“Don’t be afraid to get it wrong. That’s okay.”
Ultimately, she hopes the show’s legacy inspires more people to tell stories rooted in their own experiences.
“I’m making the show for me and for other people that I never had growing up,” Buteau says. “You do the same because it should only get better and better and better and more specific and fun and inclusive.”
