Why Survival of the Thickest Resonates with LGBTQ+ Audiences
Since its debut, Survival of the Thickesthas carved out its own lane by centering joy rather than struggle.
The series follows Mavis Beaumont, a stylist determined to build the life she deserves while navigating friendships, romance, and an evolving career. Rather than chasing perfection, the show embraces the messy reality of figuring things out in real time.
That perspective has helped the series build a devoted following, particularly among LGBTQ+ audiences who have connected with its emphasis on chosen family and authentic self-expression.
The comedy, inspired by Buteau’s essay collection, has consistently delivered heartfelt moments alongside its humor, all while celebrating a diverse group of characters who support one another through life’s biggest transitions.
The upcoming third season will mark the end of the beloved Netflix series.
Buteau serves as creator, executive producer and writer alongside creator and executive producer Danielle Sanchez-Witzel, while Amy Aniobi steps in as showrunner and executive producer for the final chapter.
Returning cast members include Buteau, Tone Bell and Marouane Zotti, while season three welcomes a robust lineup of guest stars, including Peppermint, Liza Treyger, Garcelle Beauvais, Wanda Sykes, D.L. Hughley, Ashley Graham, Ronny Chieng, Ice-T, Wyatt Cenac, Jenna Lyons, LaQuan Smith, Charles Harbison, Ashley Romans, Anthony Michael Lopez, Alecsys Proctor-Turner, Jonathan Higginbotham, Dan Amboyer and RonReaco Lee.
