Big Mistakes stars Dan Levy and Taylor Ortega have some advice for anyone debating whether to attend a Pride event this year.
Their biggest tip? Don’t overthink it.
How to Show Up During Pride Month:
When asked for their best Pride Month advice, Ortega encouraged people to push past the temptation to stay home.
“If you’re thinking of not going to something, ‘Oh, I’m not gonna go to a Pride event. I’m tired. I went to something yesterday…’ Just go. GO.”
The actress joked that skipping out often leads to immediate regret once the photos and videos start rolling in online.
“Then you’ll see Pride’s happening in other places and you’ll go, ‘I wish I went to Pride.'”
“Jealous,” Levy added.
Pride Month only comes around once a year (though we celebrate all year round, baby), bringing opportunities to celebrate community, make new connections, and create memories with friends, partners, and chosen family.
Of course, Ortega’s enthusiastic call to action came with one important addition from her co-star. Levy said “the dad” in him wants to make sure everyone is “safe and responsible.” We second that.
The advice arrives as the pair star in Netflix’s new comedy series Big Mistakes, which is now streaming.
About Big Mistakes
The series follows siblings Nicky and Morgan Dardano, two deeply unqualified people who suddenly find themselves entangled in the criminal underworld after being blackmailed into working for gangsters. What follows is a wildly chaotic chain of events as the pair attempt to navigate organized crime despite being spectacularly bad at it.
Levy stars as Nicky Dardano alongside Ortega as his sister Morgan. The ensemble cast also includes Laurie Metcalf, Elizabeth Perkins, Abby Quinn, Jacob Gutierrez, Mark Ivanir, Jack Innanen, Boran Kuzum, and Joe Barbara.
For Levy, the role offered an opportunity to play someone very different from the beloved David Rose in Schitt’s Creek.
“A lot of playing Nicky is in response to playing David,” Levy told Tudum. “Nicky is so concerned about what people think and how he shows up in a room. He’s making some really bad decisions, but they’re all rooted in well-intentioned action. He’s just trying his best.”
He continued, “It was really fun to play a character that was very antithetical to a character I had played before, and it offered a whole new set of challenges.”
While Nicky may spend much of Big Mistakes making questionable decisions, Levy’s real-life Pride Month advice is considerably more practical: get out there, celebrate your community, and make the most of the month.
Just remember to be safe while you’re doing it.
