Country music star Kacey Musgraves had fans in stitches at her Sydney show last week when she shared a surprisingly candid, and hilarious, story about accidentally walking into a gay sauna.
During her Deeper Well World Tour stop on Nov. 20, the Grammy-winning singer explained that she had been searching for an infrared sauna to relax after travel when she stumbled across the famous Sydney Sauna, known as a hotspot in the gay community.
“This is very gay… this is not meant for me,” Musgraves joked to the crowd. “They said wet rooms. What? They said there are 23 serviceable wet rooms. Plenty of cruising areas. I stayed… I wanted to make some friends, I was nosy. What if I could learn a thing or two in there?”
Fans cheered as Musgraves leaned into the story. “They said it’s 24 hours, so we’re going back after the show!” she added, poking fun at herself while embracing the LGBTQ+ scene in Sydney.
Fans quickly took to social media to celebrate the moment. One commented, “Kacey is such a fabulous ally!” while another called her a “She’s such an icon for this.”
Musgraves’ connection with LGBTQ+ audiences is longstanding. She first opened up about regretting past behavior in 2018, recalling her small-town Texas upbringing. “At 18, I was a lot more redneck than I am now,” she told Billboard, reflecting on times when she laughed at gay classmates being bullied. Meeting someone close to her who came out changed her perspective, and she now actively champions queer fans.
The Sydney concert also featured Musgraves’ usual cheeky engagement with her audience. She recalled a staff member warning her, “Get ready, because the best gays are going to be there,” prompting a wave of cheers. “I’m not trying to out anyone, damn. Raise your hand if you’re gay! I kind of feel like everyone’s a little bit gay,” she quipped.
Her humor and openness come as Musgraves continues to recover from a June injury in Mexico that broke her sixth rib, which delayed a Nashville concert. Despite the setback, the singer’s playful energy and commitment to LGBTQ+ fans remain undimmed, especially when it comes to stumbling into unexpected adventures like Sydney Sauna.
