Kathryn Hahn is officially stepping in as MOTHER.
The Emmy-nominated actor confirmed she will portray Mother Gothel in Disney’s upcoming live-action adaptation of Tangled, the beloved animated fairy tale about a long-haired princess discovering life beyond the walls that raised her. The casting places Hahn opposite Teagan Croft as Rapunzel and Milo Manheim as the roguish Flynn Rider.
Fans had already been speculating about Hahn’s involvement earlier this year. Reports in January suggested the actor was in talks to take on the iconic Disney villain, but Hahn herself hadn’t publicly acknowledged the role until now.
Her confirmation arrived in a very Hahn-coded way: a tongue-in-cheek Instagram video.
An “OOTD” That Says It All
On Tuesday, March 11, Hahn posted a short clip revealing she had only recently learned that the internet abbreviation “OOTD” stands for “Outfit of the Day.” The joke landed alongside a visual hint that doubled as a casting announcement.
In the video, Hahn modeled a T-shirt covered in images of Mother Gothel, the manipulative antagonist who keeps Rapunzel locked away in a secluded tower to preserve the magical healing power of her hair.
“OOTD, Mother Gothel,” Hahn wrote in the caption.
The post also came with a meta detail longtime fans found amusing: Hahn’s Instagram username has been @motherhahn since she joined the platform, a coincidence that now feels suspiciously on-brand.
Mother knows best, and apparently, so does the handle.
From Rumor to Reality
Industry outlets first reported Hahn’s potential casting earlier this year. According to early coverage, Disney initially explored bringing in Scarlett Johansson for the role before scheduling conflicts derailed the plan.
Johansson had been linked to the project when development restarted in late 2025, but commitments to other productions reportedly made the timing impossible. That opened the door for Hahn, whose mix of sharp comedy and theatrical flair makes her a natural fit for a Disney villain who weaponizes charm.
The character was originally voiced in the 2010 animated film by Broadway star Donna Murphy, whose performance of “Mother Knows Best” helped define the movie’s theatrical tone (and also gave little gay boys some more singing material for their bedroom).
Hahn now inherits one of Disney animation’s most deliciously manipulative antagonists.
A New Generation of Rapunzel
The live-action film will center on Rapunzel, played by Croft, best known for her role in the DC series Titans. In the classic story, Rapunzel spends her life isolated in a tower after Gothel kidnaps her as a child to exploit the magical properties of her hair.
That isolation ends when Flynn Rider, a thief with a reputation and a dramatic smolder, stumbles upon the tower. Manheim will portray the character, who quickly becomes Rapunzel’s unlikely partner in escape.
The 2010 animated version became one of Disney’s modern hits, praised for its musical numbers and comedic energy. Songs like “I See the Light” and “Mother Knows Best” helped cement the film as a favorite among younger Disney fans and musical theater lovers alike.
The live-action adaptation will attempt to translate that animated world into a new format while keeping its central dynamic intact: a princess eager to explore, a con artist with charm, and a villain who insists she’s just being protective.
Why Hahn Makes Sense as Gothel
Hahn’s casting feels especially fitting given her reputation for playing characters who walk the line between warm and unsettling.
The actor has built a career shifting between comedy and drama, appearing in projects like Tiny Beautiful Things while also delivering scene-stealing turns in satire and fantasy. Her ability to pivot from nurturing to mischievous could add new layers to Mother Gothel’s manipulative parenting style.
And if the Instagram reveal is any indication, Hahn is already leaning into the character’s theatrical side.
Disney has not yet announced a release date for the film, but the project marks the studio’s latest effort to revisit its animated catalog with live-action retellings. With Hahn now confirmed in the villain role, the tower doors appear officially open.
And if Rapunzel’s new guardian has anything to say about it, she’ll be reminding everyone that, as always, Mother knows best.
