Was Alexander The Great Bisexual Or Gay?

0

Alexander the Great, or Alexander III of Macedon, was one of the greatest generals in Ancient Greek history, known for having never lost a battle. Despite his memorable time as a leader, many have scrutinized Alexander the Great for his questionable love life and supposed homosexuality. While primarily known for his impressive conquests of Asia Minor and status as a classical hero, many still beg the question: was Alexander the Great gay? Here is what we know.

 Who Was Alexander The Great?

Alexander the Great was the previous king of the Ancient Greek kingdom of Macedon. Assuming the role at the age of twenty, Alexander eventually established the largest empire in the ancient world through lengthy and successful military campaigns. His influence also inspired the Hellenistic Period.

Reasons People Think Alexander The Great Was Gay

Modern historians and enthusiasts alike have questioned Alexander’s sexuality for years. While married to multiple women in his lifetime, the speculation regarding his true sexual preferences has always persisted.

Ancient Greeks Viewed Homosexual Relationships As Ordinary

In Ancient Greek times, homosexual experiences were nothing out of the ordinary, though they were most common amongst the upper classes. Instead of considering sexual orientation, Greeks assumed specific sexual roles, like “the dominator” and “the passive one”.

Because Alexander was king, he had the right to engage in sexual relations with anyone as long as he assumed the role of dominator. At the time, passive roles were considered effeminate.

While there is no concrete evidence that Alexander engaged in sexual relationships with men, the generally liberal approach Ancient Greeks had toward homosexuality has led many to assume he did.  But does that mean Alexander was gay?

Alexander’s Parents Bought Him A Courtesan

As a teenager, Alexander supposedly displayed very little interest in sexual relationships. Fearing that he was too “womanish”, Alexander’s parents purchased him a courtesan. However, they did not engage in a sexual relationship, which many historians have interpreted as a confirmation of his homosexuality.

Alexander Admired The Beauty Of Young Men

Alexander once beheld the beauty of a young enslaved man belonging to Charon of Chalcis at a gathering. However, when the boy was ordered to kiss Alexander, the latter firmly refused, supposedly to prevent Charon from embarrassment.

Before and after the event, Alexander had also sternly refused offers from men who attempted to pimp their male prostitutes to the king.

Hephaestion Was A Very Close Friend

While never proven, many assumed Alexander’s close friend Hephaestion was his lover. Alexander always maintained that his relationship with Hephaestion was purely platonic, though many thought it to be amorous. An ongoing quip was that Alexander abandoned the imperial administration due to “lusting over Hephaestion’s thighs”.

When Hephaestion suddenly died in 324 BC, Alexander was so grief-stricken that he clung to the body until companions dragged it away. Alexander was hysterical, ordering a state of mourning across his entire empire, banning music, and destroying the statue of Asclepios (the god of medicine). Because mortals were expected to respect and worship gods, many subjects took offense to Alexander’s actions, deeming him irrational.

Alexander Delayed The Bearing Of Offspring

While married thrice, Alexander the Great seemed to limit his relationships with women to friendships. Among his closest female friends were Ada of Caria and Sisygambis.

Alexander the Great had only two children with the women he wed: Alexander IV of Macedon and Heracles of Macedon. However, the king took ample time to produce an heir that his parents feared would never be born.

Eventually, Alexander the Great’s spouse, Princess Roxana of Bactria, bore heir Alexander IV at the end of the king’s life.

Alexander The Great’s Sexuality Portrayed In Pop Culture

Film, television, and music have hardly strayed from the “was Alexander the Great bi or gay” question. In fact, most pop culture takes on the king have focused on it.

Take Oliver Stone’s 2004 film Alexander. The film depicts Alexander as unafraid to be “feminine” as he stares longingly at his male subjects. Stone’s Alexander gives in to emotions – he whines, cries, and softens. However, Alexander mostly fetishizes the historical figure and even surrounds him with scantily clad, oversexualized women.
Instead of allowing Alexander some complexity, the film confuses him and fails to make him relatable.

Following the film’s premiere, 25 Greek lawyers threatened to sue Stone and Warner Bros for a “grossly inaccurate” depiction of Alexander the Great. They argued that the film’s approach to Alexander’s sexuality was highly disproportionate while maintaining, “We are not saying that we are against gays.”

The Bottom Line

While historians never confirmed Alexander the Great’s sexuality, many modern ones are reclaiming him as a “gay hero” of sorts. Ultimately, many of his subjects saw his aversion toward sexual interests as “not wishing to offend the Macedonians” and a respectful way to control “pleasures of the body”.

So, if you’re still scratching your head wondering, “Was Alexander the Great bi or gay?”, you might be left wondering – just like the rest of us!

Biden Administration Hosts First Bi Health Equity Roundtable

0

It’s Bisexual Awareness Week! A week to highlight the distinct inequities faced by the bisexual community. A community, by the way, that makes up more than half of the LGBTQ+ population. With this in mind, this year was marked by a historic occasion. Fifteen bi+ community leaders met with federal agency officials at the Department of Health and Human Services. For the first time, seven years after similar roundtables under Obama, The Biden Administration is stepping up for bisexual folks.

Before we move forward, a quick lesson on terminology. In this article, we will be using the term bi+. This is an umbrella term that includes bisexual, pansexual, omnisexual, multisexual, and other non-monosexual orientations.

Why Is This Important?

Despite the relative size of the bi+ community, folks that identify as such face shocking health disparities. These disparities include mental and physical health, intimate partner violence, and Monkeypox prevention, treatment, and care. There are many reasons for this. They include external stressors such as violence, isolation, and bi-erasure. Additionally, internalized stressors such as alienation, loneliness, and internalized stigma.

All of these can lead to, exasperate, or compound with health disparities such as physiological distress and disorders. When we consider the many gaps in funding and research around bi+ folks, in particular, we begin to get a sense of the scope of this issue. For this and many more reasons, action is desperately needed from the Biden Administration for bisexual folks.

A Call to Action

This week, fifteen bi+ community leaders presented the administration with a set of benchmarks, including the creation of a Federal Interagency Bisexual Liaison and a Federal Interagency Bisexual Working Group.

The leaders represent a diverse cross-section of the bi+ community from various backgrounds. They include parents, educators, academics, researchers, healthcare professionals, lawyers, media professionals, and activists. To better represent the bi+ community authentically, the leaders include nonbinary, trans, young, old, Black, Asian, and disabled folks as well as Muslim advocates and parents.

Meet the Leaders

Khafre Abif is a Black bisexual educator, father, and person living with HIV. “This meeting has been a long time coming for the bi+ community,” said Abif. “I’m looking forward to a dialogue with federal officials about solving some of the health issues we face.”

Blair Imani is a Black, bisexual, and Muslim educator that has made a name for herself online. Together with her book, Read This To Get Smarter, and her series Smarter In Seconds, Blair has been instrumental in shaping online discourse surrounding bisexuality. She also came out live on air to Tucker Carlon, which was iconic, to say the least. “Visibility alone won’t end oppression,” said Blair. “But building coalitions and working intergenerationally to demand that the government acknowledge and protect Bi+ people? That’s what it’s all about.”

Robyn Ochs is a pillar of bisexual and pansexual community organizing. “Research has made clear our health disparities and invisibility,” said Robyn. “It’s time for federal interventions to catch up with what we already know through research and lived experience.”

Protect Bi+ People

This historic moment represents a positive step toward equity for our bi+ siblings. We hope to see meaningful action from the Biden Administration for bisexual folks, rather than symbolic gestures. Although it would be nice for the White House to light up in pink, purple, and blue on purpose.

This Japanese Bodybuilder Stripped Down to Pitch

0

The universe keeps telling us to watch baseball, and it’s about time that we listen. This time we’re talking about Japanese baseball. If you didn’t already know, Japan takes baseball very seriously. The sport was introduced to Japan in 1872 and is the country’s most popular participatory and spectator sport. They also participate in the time-honored tradition of inviting a special guest to pitch. Sometimes that guest is extra special. Hunky bodybuilder Naotaka Yokokawa stripped down to throw the first pitch at a recent game between the Orix Buffaloes and the Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks.

Macho, Macho Man

Naotaka Yokokawa is a 28-year-old, Tokyo-born bodybuilder who even has some bodybuilding awards under his belt. Among these is his 2019 win at the JBBF All Japan Bodybuilding Championship. Yokokawa walked onto the field wearing an Orix Buffaloes jersey, shorts, and cap. He bowed to the crowd before jogging onto the pitching mound while holding gold-colored dumbbells. The lyrics to Macho Man by the Village People rang out throughout the stadium, so you just knew this was going to be good.

Yokokawa then proceeded to get his kit off, to the surprise of the audience. First his shirt, then his shorts, leaving only a dark purple thong and his Orix Buffaloes cap. He then took the opportunity to do what he does best and flex for the crowd, who responded by applauding respectfully.

A Dream Come True

When Yokokawa grabbed the mitt and chalked his hands, he was playing out a dream scenario. “I love baseball,” he wrote on Instagram saying it was “a dream come true.” The pitch itself went quite a bit wide, but luckily Yokokawa had fun regardless. “It would have been cool to have a strike,” said the 28-year-old, “but it would be Naotaka Yokokawa who would end up with a big wild pitch.”

Check out the video of the pitch below.

Was Jeffrey Dahmer Gay?

0

When cannibalistic serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer rose to infamy in the 1980s, his preference for young, gay men exacerbated issues like homophobia and racism, especially for Milwaukee’s gay community. Still, some people remain unsure about Dahmer’s sexuality, which begs the question: was Jeffrey Dahmer really gay? When we think about serial killers, the last thing we wonder about is their sexuality. However, some of the most infamous serial killers in history have profoundly impacted the LGBTQ+ community, especially in the 1970s and 80s.

Who Was Jeffrey Dahmer?

Dahmer, Revere High School yearbook, 1978

Jeffrey Dahmer, nicknamed the Milwaukee Cannibal, was a notorious serial killer, sex offender, and cannibal who murdered and dismembered 17 boys from 1978 to 1991. Dahmer also engaged in necrophilia with some of his victims and preserved some of their body parts. Though he was eventually diagnosed with various disorders, such as schizophrenia, borderline personality disorder, and psychotic disorder, Dahmer was deemed legally sane to stand trial. He was sentenced to fifteen terms of life imprisonment and beaten to death by an inmate in November of 1994.

The story of Jeffrey Dahmer is horrific. Through his hideous actions, Dahmer took these people from their families and their loved ones forever. His actions left a scar on their lives and struck a fear at the heart of Milwaukee’s gay community. As we explore this aspect of Dahmer, be careful not to lose sight of the fact that he was, first and foremost, a serial killer.

This was Dahmer’s true legacy. The victims and their communities that were left behind to pick up the pieces.

Why Do People Think Jeffrey Dahmer Was Gay?

Because Dahmer’s spree occurred during the AIDS epidemic in 1987, his actions impacted the LGBTQ+ community detrimentally. However, without explicit confirmation that Dahmer identified as homosexual, many turned to evidence from his childhood and actual killings to confirm the criminal’s sexual orientation.

He Had Relationships With Boys In His Adolescence

Dahmer had brief relationships with male classmates in his early teenage years, though he never engaged in intercourse. He hid this fact from his parents.  Though later admitted to police that he began fantasizing about dominating and manipulating male partners as early as thirteen. Dahmer also shared that his sexual fantasies evolved into violent ones, such as dissecting male chests and torsos.

The initial urge to harm a male peer happened when Dahmer was sixteen. The killer admitted to being tempted to knock a male jogger unconscious and engage in sexual intercourse with the body. Dahmer attempted to turn his fantasy into reality though his potential target did not pass by that day. Fortunately, the unsuspecting victim unknowingly dodged an attack.

His Behavior As A Mixer Was Suspicious

In 1985, Dahmer worked as a mixer at the Milwaukee Ambrosia Chocolate Factory, during which time many patrons described his behavior as sketchy or suspicious. During his employment, Dahmer received propositions from multiple men, and, though he didn’t accept any, he later admitted that it triggered many of his violent fantasies.

He Frequented Gay Bathhouses

In late 1985, Dahmer began to frequent gay bars and bathhouses, where he experienced his first sexual encounters. While consensual, Dahmer stated that his meetings were “frustrating” because of how his sexual partners engaged with him. When asked to elaborate, Dahmer told police, “I trained myself to view people as objects of pleasure instead of people.”

When Dahmer realized his twisted preferences, he began to drug men with sedatives, waiting for his partners to fall asleep before performing sexual acts on them.

He Stole A Male Mannequin

After being fired from his job at the chocolate factory, Dahmer became more reckless and impulsive, once stealing a male mannequin from a store. He then used it for sexual pleasure, and his grandmother eventually discovered the item and asked him to discard it.

He Was Arrested For Disorderly Conduct

Not only was Dahmer presumed gay by 1986, but he was also known to feel attraction toward male minors. In September 1986, Dahmer was arrested for publicly masturbating while watching two twelve-year-old boys. Police charged Dahmer with disorderly conduct, sentencing him to a year of probation and mental health counseling.

His Victims Were All Young Men

It’s no secret that Dahmer’s crimes were grisly and unthinkable. However, it remains relatively understated that all his victims were young men he seduced at gay bars. Dahmer would take his victims back to his grandmother’s house, engage in sexual activity, then drug them with triazolam or temazepam-laced drinks before strangling them.

Jeffrey Dahmer Victims

Dahmer’s Impact On The LGBTQ Community

Despite the darkness Dahmer cast on the LGBTQ community after his arrest, his crimes inspired significant systematic change, especially in Milwaukee. Over 400 people, including gay rights activists, attended the candlelight vigil for Dahmer’s victims in 1991.

The murders also turned Milwaukee’s underground gay scene even more transient, with many using aliases for protection. However, the killings also inspired sensitivity training within the Milwaukee Police Department and an even more aggressive fight toward acceptance.

Portrayals Of Dahmer’s Sexuality In Pop Culture

Film, television, and podcasts are no strangers to Dahmer-related content. In fact, Dahmer is a subject some critics will even describe as “overdone”. Yet, Dahmer-focused mini-series and documentaries continue to surface thanks to a fascination with his so-called repressed queerness.

In 2017, actor Ross Lynch portrayed the serial killer in My Friend Dahmer. In an interview, he said, “Maybe we can make better efforts with people who seem out of place. Maybe we can step in and avoid creating more Jeffrey Dahmers,” implying that repression of his sexuality led to such extreme violence.

Ryan Murphy’s upcoming mini-series Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story also portrays Dahmer as a “high-profile gay killer”. According to Murphy, the show aims to study the racial dynamics of queer men of color and how white privilege sustained Dahmer’s near-unstoppable spree.

The Bottom Line

From his later admissions and the evidence gathered over the years, we may be able to deduce that notorious serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer identified as gay. That said, Dahmer, himself never confirmed his sexuality, so we can’t say for sure. Ultimately, while Dahmer’s fantasies and actions were harmful to the LGBTQ community, they also inspired change within law enforcement groups and eventually led to safer spaces for marginalized groups.
