Thursday’s new music plans just got a little more exciting. Olivia Rodrigo is bringing Chappell Roan onto “Expectations,” giving the song from her third album, You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love, a new version and a music video. Oh, we’re so ready.

Mark your calendars, because both arrive Oct. 15 at 5 p.m. PT. Bardia Zeinali directed the video, while Dan Nigro, who has worked extensively with both singers, produced the remix.

Rodrigo made the announcement Tuesday, sharing a photo of herself and Roan with a yellow car whose “XPECT8NS” license plate did some of the promotional work for them.

“Beyond excited to announce ‘expectations’ featuring Chappell Roan!!! song and video out Thursday!!!!” she wrote on Instagram.

The Fans Always Know

Before Rodrigo revealed her collaborator, she offered a clue that fans quickly investigated. An Instagram Stories teaser included the line, “Ooh, Olivia does remixes now,” delivered by a voice listeners identified as Roan’s.

Now that the feature is official, attention turns to what the pair have planned for the track and its video. Their announcement image offers a first glimpse, but fans will have to wait until Thursday for the full reveal.

Back Together Again

Rodrigo and Roan already have plenty of shared musical history. Roan supported Rodrigo on her Sour and Guts tours, and their connection continued long after those opening sets.

In August, Roan joined the lineup at Daisy Chain Fields, Rodrigo’s inaugural festival in Irvine, California. The event brought together a women-led roster that included Doechii, Mitski, Garbage and the Breeders, raising $20 million for nonprofit organizations supporting women and girls.

Roan will soon host her own benefit. Her Super Graphic Spectacular events in Los Angeles on Oct. 21-22 will feature Tinashe, Muna, Lola Young and Caroline Polachek. Net proceeds from ticket sales will support the Midwest Princess Project’s work helping trans youth and LGBTQ+ communities.

Rodrigo is also keeping busy with her Unraveled tour, which supports her latest album. “Expectations” adds another release to that chapter, this time with a friend joining her on the recording.

For fans who have followed the two from tour performances to festival appearances, Thursday brings a chance to hear that musical connection in a new way.
