Prime Video still hasn’t set a release date for “Red, White & Royal Wedding,” the sequel to its 2023 rom-com “Red, White & Royal Blue,” even though the movie is fully shot, Deadline reported Wednesday, Nov. 4. Princess Beatrice is getting married. Alex Claremont-Diaz and Prince Henry are there as a couple.
When does ‘Red, White & Royal Wedding’ come out?
Cameras rolled in January, as Gayety reported at the time, and the shoot was done by March.
“Yeah, I think end of the year,” Lena Headey, who plays Henry’s mother, Princess Catherine, told ScreenRant in April. She offered her guess while promoting Ballistic, her April 17 theatrical release. Amazon hasn’t announced a date for Prime Video.
Casey McQuiston’s novella Red, White & Royal Blue: The Private Correspondence does have a date, December 1, according to its publisher. Alex and Henry eventually miss writing to each other after the email leak. They switch to pen and paper. Their letters, postcards and diary entries span the next 20 years.
Whose wedding is it? Princess Beatrice’s, says Casey McQuiston
McQuiston, who wrote the 2019 novel, co-wrote the script with Gemma Burgess and Matthew López, the first film’s director, according to Amazon. “It’s definitely Bea’s wedding. I have literally seen Ellie Bamber in the wedding dress,” McQuiston told Swooon at BookCon in April.
Nobody has said who plays Beatrice’s fiancé. “I think people are really gonna like him,” McQuiston said.
McQuiston said the film’s story picks up a little after the last one ends. If you remember the author saying Alex and Henry settle down in Texas with daughters, that was about the books. Even the royal family tree differs. The first film made Henry the middle child, whereas readers met him as the youngest.
“Alex is in a committed, real relationship with Henry, he’s graduated from law school,” Zakhar Perez told VMAN during filming. He and Uma Thurman, who plays Alex’s mother, became friends off set between the two movies. Back on set with Galitzine and Rachel Hilson, he said, “we’re in lockstep.”
‘Red, White & Royal Wedding’ cast: Who’s back and who’s new?
Taylor Zakhar Perez and Nicholas Galitzine lead again as Alex Claremont-Diaz and Prince Henry. Amazon’s cast list, updated in January, brings back nine more actors from the first film. Uma Thurman returns as President Ellen Claremont and Stephen Fry as King James III, the roles they played in 2023, per the original credits. TheWrap’s character guide identifies the faces on both sides of the Atlantic in the first film.
Two 2023 cast members, Akshay Khanna and Juan Castano, don’t appear on Amazon’s list. Headey, Fineman, Ashton and Andersen are the four newcomers. Headey called Catherine “a little uptight, I would say, and quite funny.” Amazon hasn’t said whom the other three play.

Taylor Zakhar Perez as Alex Claremont-Diaz
Alex has graduated from law school. He can walk into Bea’s wedding as Henry’s boyfriend, a luxury neither man had at the last royal wedding. Getting that first invitation took some work. Matthew López told TV Insider that hundreds of young Latino actors auditioned for Alex. Galitzine had already landed Henry when Zakhar Perez got the call.
Nicholas Galitzine as Prince Henry
Henry is the bride’s older brother in the movies. He once faced a choice between Alex and the palace. This time, he brings Alex into a family celebration. Galitzine previously played another prince, Robert, in the 2021 musical Cinderella.
Galitzine came to the sequel from five months on “The Mosquito Bowl,” and he told Variety at AFI Fest in October that the change felt good, as Gayety reported. “It was a nice reset going onto that film set after having bombs blow up in my face for five months,” he said.
Ellie Bamber as Princess Beatrice
Bea gets the wedding in the title. Henry’s younger sister was one of the few people he could confide in during the first film. Her fiancé’s identity is still under wraps. Bamber also played Elora Danan in Willow.
Lena Headey as Princess Catherine
Catherine is Henry, Bea and Philip’s mother. She was absent from the first film, which left her father, King James, to speak for the crown. Headey, who played Cersei Lannister in Game of Thrones, joins a different royal family for her first film in this series.
Thomas Flynn as Prince Philip
Bea’s wedding makes Philip the brother of the bride. He was the groom when Alex and Henry knocked over the cake in the first movie. As Henry’s older brother, Philip has spent his life closer to the throne. Flynn’s other credits include Riot Women.
Stephen Fry as King James III
James is the grandfather Henry faced after his private emails with Alex went public. He tried to protect the monarchy by talking Henry out of acknowledging their relationship. Fry returns as king for his granddaughter’s wedding. His other screen credits include The Dropout.
Uma Thurman as President Ellen Claremont
Ellen is the president of the United States and Alex’s mother. In the first film she managed a reelection campaign while making time to talk to Alex about Henry. Thurman, known for Kill Bill and Pulp Fiction, returns opposite her on-screen son.
Clifton Collins Jr. as Oscar Diaz
Oscar is Alex’s dad, the first gentleman who welcomes Henry to the family’s Texas lake house. Making the kitchen conversation between father and son look easy took a little acting. “Cliff does not know how to chop vegetables!” López recalled in The Credits. Keep an eye on Collins and that red pepper next time.
Rachel Hilson as Nora Holleran
Alex goes to Nora when he needs to talk through his first kiss with Henry. Some of those confidences belonged to June, Alex’s sister, on the page. López told TV Insider that giving June’s scenes to Nora let him offer Hilson one substantial part. You may also know her as Mia Brooks from Love, Victor.
Malcolm Atobrah as Percy “Pez” Okonjo
Pez is Henry’s best friend and his partner in charity work. He met Nora during the first film, connecting the prince’s small circle with Alex’s. Atobrah’s other films include Rye Lane and The Running Man.
Sarah Shahi as Zahra Bankston
Zahra, the White House deputy chief of staff, opens a hotel closet and finds an actual prince. Shahi had a particular rhythm in mind for the first film. She told /Film she heard echoes of Cary Grant and Katharine Hepburn in its screwball comedy. Watch her try to get a straight answer out of Alex about that hotel room.
Aneesh Sheth as Amy Gupta
The woman keeping an eye on Alex aboard the plane in the photo above is Amy Gupta, his Secret Service agent. She gets to see the first son with his guard down. Before she took that job on screen, Sheth played Gillian, the assistant who ran interference for Jessica Jones in the Marvel series.
Chloe Fineman (role undisclosed)
Fineman’s casting came out in January alongside Headey’s. Only one of them got a character name in the announcement. Fineman spent seven seasons doing impressions on Saturday Night Live, including Drew Barrymore. Her recent comedies include Freakier Friday and Jillian Bell’s Summer of 69.
Henry Ashton (role undisclosed)
Ashton has already done a little romancing in a palace for Prime Video. As Stan Dudley in My Lady Jane, he played the lute by torchlight in the courtyard of Hampton Court Palace, he told The Rakish Gent. That’s also him in the photo above as Max Hastings, the much less charming local in A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder.
Alex Høgh Andersen (role undisclosed)
Andersen came to English-language television as Ivar, one of Ragnar’s sons in Vikings. Look for him at the front of the boat above, between his screen brothers. The Danish actor also worked with Pedro Almodóvar on The Room Next Door. He and Ashton appeared together in Amazon’s first announcement of the sequel’s new cast.
Is there a ‘Red, White & Royal Wedding’ trailer?
Prime Video hasn’t released a full trailer. The January announcement that filming had begun opens with a welcome from Galitzine. Zakhar Perez’s next order of business is clearing up that title. “We’re not getting married,” he says. Galitzine gets the last word on that prospect: “That’s a long ways off at this point.”

Why is ‘Red, White & Royal Wedding’ rated R?
The Motion Picture Association rates the sequel R for “sexual content/nudity and language.” The listing names Amazon MGM Studios and gives certificate number 56231. The first film’s R rating had a different description, specifying “some sexual content, partial nudity and language.”
At Prime Video’s Obsessed Fest in June, McQuiston told a panel the new movie is “a couple degrees spicier than the first,” Marie Claire reported. Fans also get something Alex and Henry had precious little of before their relationship became public. McQuiston said the sequel follows them home and lets us see them living together.
Where can I watch the first movie?
You can watch Red, White & Royal Blue on Prime Video. Matthew López directed the cake disaster that brought Alex and Henry together. He co-wrote the next wedding with McQuiston and Gemma Burgess. This time he’s handing the camera to Jamie Babbit, the director of But I’m a Cheerleader.
“We all need this kind of optimism, fantasy, and gay joy,” Babbit said when Amazon announced the movie.
