A24 is giving the pop-music world a supernatural twist, and Anne Hathaway is front and center. The studio unveiled the first trailer for Mother Mary, a drama that blends celebrity mythology with a creeping sense of dread, and Hathaway takes the stage as a performer who’s lost her footing.

The film arrives in theaters this April and brings together a cast stacked with queer-favorite talent, plus original songs from FKA twigs, Charli XCX and Jack Antonoff.

A Pop Icon in Crisis

Hathaway plays Mother Mary, a chart-topping musician who attempts to revive her glow by reconnecting with Sam, her former creative partner played by Michaela Coel. What begins as a reunion slowly tilts into something far stranger, as old wounds and industry pressures collide with Mary’s growing paranoia.

A24 describes the story as one where long-silent fractures between the two women resurface right as Mary prepares for her big return. Coel’s Sam, once the designer behind Mary’s most iconic looks, becomes both anchor and spark, pulling the singer back into the memories she’s tried to outrun.

A Cast With Style and Edge

The film is directed by David Lowery, known for The Green Knight, and features a lineup that feels made for queer cinephiles: Hunter Schafer, Atheena Frizzell, Kaia Gerber, Jessica Brown Findlay, Alba Baptista, Isaura Barbé-Brown, and Sian Clifford all make appearances. FKA twigs not only acts but also contributes original music alongside Charli XCX and Jack Antonoff, a trio with enough range to soundtrack mania, heartbreak and everything in between.

Hathaway’s Pop Boot Camp

Hathaway has spoken openly about how far outside her comfort zone she had to travel for the role. In a Vogue profile earlier this year, she said she approached pop-star training the way someone might approach a beginners’ dance class — with discomfort, surrender and a willingness to look foolish.

She described the transition as a necessary ego-strip: a reset that allowed her to find the physicality and headspace of someone living under the hot lights of fandom.

From Strike Waiver to Big Screen

The project first made headlines in 2023 when it received a SAG-AFTRA waiver that allowed filming to continue during the actors’ strike. Hathaway shared a behind-the-scenes photo last summer, calling the experience one of the most meaningful of her career.

The actor has a packed calendar ahead. After Mother Mary lands this spring, she’ll roll into a trio of major 2026 releases: The Devil Wears Prada 2, The Odyssey and Verity.

Mother Mary opens in theaters in April.
