One of the year’s most celebrated LGBTQ films is adding another milestone before reaching audiences.
Netflix has announced that La Bola Negra (The Black Ball), the acclaimed Spanish-language drama from filmmakers Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi, will open in U.S. theaters on Oct. 16 before making its Netflix debut on Dec. 2. At the same time, the streamer confirmed it has acquired Canadian distribution rights as the film prepares to screen at the Toronto International Film Festival.
The latest announcement continues an extraordinary run for La Bola Negra, which emerged as one of the breakout titles at the Cannes Film Festival before Netflix won a competitive bidding war for U.S. distribution. Now, the film is headed to another major festival stage, where one of its stars will also receive special recognition.
Penélope Cruz, who appears in the film, will be honored with a Special Tribute Award during the TIFF Tribute Awards, adding another high-profile moment to the movie’s awards-season momentum.
From Cannes Darling to TIFF Spotlight
Directed, co-written and produced by Spanish duo Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi, better known as Los Javis, La Bola Negra has steadily built anticipation since its Cannes premiere.
The filmmakers tied for the festival’s Best Director prize after unveiling the sweeping drama on the Croisette, where it quickly became one of the event’s most talked-about titles. The recognition followed an enthusiastic response from critics, many of whom praised the film’s emotional storytelling and ambitious scope.
Netflix’s acquisition ensured the film would receive a broad release, and its selection for TIFF’s prestigious Special Presentations program further cements its place among this year’s leading international releases.
A Story That Spans Generations
Inspired by an unfinished work from legendary Spanish poet Federico García Lorca, La Bola Negra unfolds across nearly a century of Spanish history.
Rather than focusing on a single protagonist, the film follows three generations of men whose lives become intertwined through love, desire and loss. Across decades, their experiences reflect the enduring impact of family, memory and queer identity, creating a narrative that stretches from Spain’s past into the present.
The project has drawn praise for centering LGBTQ lives within a sweeping historical drama while exploring the sacrifices made by earlier generations whose struggles helped shape today’s freedoms.
In a previous statement following Netflix’s acquisition, Calvo and Ambrossi explained the inspiration behind the project.
“When we began writing La Bola Negra, we wanted to tell a story about freedom, legacy, and the importance of LGBTQ+ visibility. Above all, we wanted to honor the generations of people whose courage and sacrifice made our freedoms possible today.”
The directors also celebrated the opportunity to bring the film to a wider audience through Netflix, saying they hoped it would help carry Lorca’s legacy to viewers around the world.
An Ensemble Filled With International Talent
The film marks the feature acting debut of Spanish music star Guitarricadelafuente, who leads an international ensemble alongside Elite actor Miguel Bernardeau.
The cast also includes Carlos González, Milo Quifes, Lola Dueñas, Julio Torres, Penélope Cruz and Glenn Close, blending emerging performers with acclaimed screen veterans.
Calvo and Ambrossi co-wrote the screenplay with playwright Alberto Conejero.
The production is a Movistar Plus+ Original created in collaboration with Suma Content Films. It is produced by Telefónica Audiovisual Digital and Los Esquiadores AIE, co-produced by Pedro and Agustín Almodóvar’s El Deseo and French company Le Pacte, with participation from Atresmedia and CREA SGR. International sales are handled by Goodfellas.
