“It’s not lie or truth, it’s PTSD!” That’s how Wicked: For Good star Ariana Grande summed up her state of mind in Vanity Fair’s latest lie detector test.
The pop icon and her co-star Bowen Yang sat down to interrogate each other about everything from the moon landing and Disney rides to kissing on SNL and who they’d actually pull strings for. Spoiler: it’s somehow both wholesome and completely unhinged.
“Can we worry about Earth for five minutes?”
If you thought Ariana would dodge the moon landing question this time around, think again. Before the test even started, she brought it up herself. Last time, when Cynthia Erivo asked if she believed we have landed on the moon, the machine picked up some deception. Here’s her update:
“The truth is I don’t give a rat’s ass! I’m worried about Earth, goddamnit. We’re burning alive. We’re killing each other. Can we worry about Earth for five minutes? Who cares about the moon and the flag. How did you get me here again? You guys! Please God, help.”
The pop star’s passionate plea turned the conspiracy conversation into a climate-change sermon — and honestly, she’s got a point. When the examiner later asked if she’d ever want to go to space, her answer was an immediate no.
The things Ariana will pull strings for
While she might not care about the moon, Ariana does care about a few earthly pleasures. She admitted she’d pull strings for:
- Bowen landing a role in Wicked (mission accomplished).
- Her dear friend Aaron Simon Gross’ favorite ice cream flavors at Salt & Straw
- The Tower of Terror at Disney World
“See? When it matters,” she teased.
Bowen’s “straight skits” confession
Bowen didn’t escape the test unscathed either. When asked about his straight characters on Saturday Night Live, he joked about how his “Bowen is Straight” sketches could turn gay women straight. At first, he said he could picture a lesbian barista somewhere wanting to hook up with him, but then quickly backtracked:
“There’s so many other options.”
On kisses and chemistry
Of course, no Vanity Fair lie detector is complete without a little awkward intimacy. Bowen revisited his and Ariana’s infamous SNL kiss — and when asked who’s the better kisser, Ariana or Sydney Sweeney, he had to think. (We’ll let you guess what the machine said.) Ariana also snuck in a question about being a good kisser. But he’s gay!
“Wicked” chemistry — and pure chaos
Between their teasing friendship and rapid-fire banter, it’s clear these two have genuine chemistry — not just as co-stars, but as chaotic kindred spirits. But the real chemistry of the interview is between Grande and Stephanie, the polygraph operator. Is it just me or was there something between them? Anyway…
Final verdict
Between Ariana’s moon-landing meltdown, Bowen’s lesbian barista fantasy, and all the Wicked love, this might be the funniest (and most chaotic) Vanity Fair lie detector yet.
Wicked: For Good will fly into theaters on November 21.
