Returning to Gayety after debuting their distinctive visual storytelling in an earlier feature, BATE CRUSH once again blurs the line between photography and narrative. This latest project trades spectacle for subtlety, inviting viewers into a deeply personal moment where attraction begins to evolve into something harder to define.
It’s that emotional tension that makes the series linger long after you’ve scrolled past the final frame.
A Story Told Between The Moments
According to BATE CRUSH, the concept began with a simple question.
What happens when two people who expected a casual night together wake up realizing they want something more, but neither wants to admit it first?
“The sex is the easy part,” BATE CRUSH explains. “The awkward part comes the next morning, when both people want the other to stay but neither wants to be the first person to admit it.”
Rather than centering the physical encounter, the series leans into everything surrounding it: lingering eye contact, nervous laughter, hesitation and the quiet hope that the feeling might be mutual.
The accompanying short film introduces that emotional crossroads before the story continues through a sequence of Instax photographs that reveal what unfolds after one person decides to stay just a little longer.
Photography That Pulls You Into The Room
What immediately stands out isn’t simply the chemistry between Phoenix and Marz, it’s the closeness and warmth BATE CRUSH captures through the lens.
The Polaroids feel less like posed photographs and more like memories someone accidentally left behind.
Each frame hones in on the closeness that exists behind closed doors, preserving fleeting moments that feel both personal and cinematic. There’s an honesty to the images that draws you in almost instantly. BATE CRUSH had photographed each creator individually in the past but intentionally paired them for this project because both brought confidence, openness and a willingness to trust the creative process.
That trust paid off almost immediately.
“What surprised me most was how easy it was to work with Marz,” Phoenix says. “Once we realized we were on the same wavelength, everything flowed naturally.”
The series was photographed inside Phoenix’s bedroom, adding another layer of authenticity to the visual story. While it’s an intimate setting, Phoenix says it didn’t fundamentally change the way he experiences the space.
“I’ve always been happy that my bedroom can also function as a workspace,” he says, adding that no audience will ever experience it quite the way he does.
Beyond The Fantasy
The conversation extends beyond the photographs themselves, touching on what audiences are really searching for online.
When asked why certain creators resonate, Phoenix admits there’s no easy answer.
“I want the appreciation for the content I make to come from me first and not just from the gratification of other people enjoying it,” he says, reflecting on the complicated relationship between creativity, validation and algorithms.
Marz echoes a similar sentiment, arguing that connection ultimately matters more than performance.
“I think people really respond when they can feel the personality behind the content,” he says. “For a second, it feels like we stop performing and just genuinely see each other.”
Those reflections mirror the heart of BATE CRUSH’s latest work. While the photographs are undeniably sensual, they also challenge the assumption that intimacy begins and ends with physical attraction. Instead, they suggest that sometimes the most vulnerable moment comes after everything else, when two strangers decide whether to remain strangers.
That’s what gives this series its staying power.
