FX has officially canceled English Teacher, the Brian Jordan Alvarez–created comedy series that ran for two seasons.
The series starred Alvarez, best known for his viral queer comedy The Gay and Wondrous Life of Caleb Gallo, as Evan Marquez, a high school English teacher in Austin caught in a series of personal and political scandals at work. The cast also included Stephanie Koenig, Sean Patton, Carmen Christopher, Enrico Colantoni, and Jordan Firstman.
English Teacher premiered in September 2024 to positive critical attention, with its blend of offbeat humor and sharp cultural commentary. Season 1 aired weekly, while Season 2, which premiered in September 2025, was released all at once in a binge-ready format.
While Alvarez’s distinct comedic voice and the show’s queer sensibilities resonated with audiences online, English Teacher’s trajectory was complicated by controversy surrounding its creator.
Days before the series debut, Alvarez was accused of sexual assault by Jon Ebeling, his former friend and co-star from the 2015 cult web series The Gay and Wondrous Life of Caleb Gallo. Ebeling first made the allegations public via Instagram, later expanding on them in a December 2024 New York Magazine article.
Ebeling also accused Stephanie Koenig, Alvarez’s longtime collaborator and English Teacher co-star, of contributing to what he described as a harmful dynamic between himself and Alvarez.
Despite the controversy, FX moved forward with English Teacher’s second season, renewing the show just weeks after the New York Magazine story was published. At the time, the network issued a short statement:
“We reviewed the allegations presented to us by another media outlet prior to the show’s launch. Mr. Ebeling never reached out to us with any concerns. We will have no further comment at this time.”
In its Season 2 renewal press release, FX made no mention of the allegations. Instead, FX Entertainment president Nick Grad praised the creative team, calling English Teacher “one of the most critically acclaimed new shows of 2024.”
Produced by FX Productions, English Teacher was executive produced by Alvarez, Paul Simms, Jonathan Krisel, Dave King, Kathryn Dean, Jake Bender, and Zach Dunn.
While the cancellation ends Alvarez’s first major network project, the series remains notable for bringing queer humor and perspective into the mainstream FX lineup, even amid controversy and the challenges of navigating fame in the post-viral era.
