Nearly three decades after the release of the beloved 1997 comedy, Hulu has officially started production on a sequel to Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion, bringing back fan favorites Lisa Kudrow and Mira Sorvino as the iconic best friends.
The upcoming Hulu original film is currently shooting in Los Angeles and will see Kudrow and Sorvino reprise their roles as Romy White and Michele Weinberger, the fashionable duo whose unforgettable high school reunion became a cult classic.
Several familiar faces from the original film are also returning. Alan Cumming will once again play Sandy Frink, while Janeane Garofalo returns as Heather, Camryn Manheim reprises Toby, and Julia Campbell is back as Christie Masters.

The sequel is also adding a handful of new faces to the mix. Keegan-Michael Key, Rob Huebel, Breckin Meyer, Patrick Warburton, and Nathan Lee Graham have joined the ensemble cast in undisclosed roles.
Behind the scenes, the creative team is also bringing together many of the people who helped make the original film such a fan favorite. Robin Schiff, who created the characters and wrote the 1997 movie, returns to pen the sequel. Veteran producer Laurence Mark is also back, having produced the original film.
The movie will be directed and produced by Tim Federle, best known for creating and executive producing High School Musical: The Musical: The Series. Fans of the original’s colorful fashion can also celebrate the return of legendary costume designer Mona May, whose work helped define Romy and Michele’s instantly recognizable style.
While plot details remain under wraps, excitement for a sequel has been building for years. Interest reached a fever pitch in 2022 when Kudrow and Sorvino reunited onstage at the SAG Awards to present an award together, reigniting hopes that the pair would eventually return to their beloved characters.
The stars celebrated the production announcement on Instagram by sharing a playful teaser photo with fans. In the image, Kudrow and Sorvino sit side by side in director’s chairs wearing outfits that appear to nod to their iconic looks from the original film. With the camera positioned behind them, the photo keeps their full costumes and any story clues under wraps, leaving fans to speculate about what adventures Romy and Michele might find themselves in this time around.
Unlike the original film, which received a theatrical release in 1997, the sequel will debut as a Hulu original.
No release date has been announced yet, but with production officially underway, fans are one step closer to seeing Romy and Michele back together again.
