The lines between sports fiction and real-world spectacle are blurring for Heated Rivalry stars Hudson Williams and Connor Storrie.

The breakout actors from HBO Max’s buzzy LGBTQ+ hockey drama have been selected as official torchbearers for the Olympic Torch Relay ahead of the 2026 Winter Games in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo, the streamer confirmed Thursday. While their characters once skated through a fictional Olympic storyline, Williams and Storrie are now headed for the real thing, just without the skates.

From Cult Adaptation to Streaming Standout

Heated Rivalry, adapted for television by Jacob Tierney from Rachel Reid’s popular Game Changers novels, has quietly become one of the most talked-about series of the 2025–26 TV season. The show centers on Shane Hollander (Williams), a Canadian hockey star, and Ilya Rozanov (Storrie), a Russian phenom navigating a secret relationship shaped by competition, fame, and fear of exposure.

Originally released on Canada’s Crave, the series surged into wider visibility after HBO Max acquired U.S. rights in late November. The move sent both the show and its previously low-profile leads into a much larger spotlight.

“I knew it was going to be something. I did not know it was going to be HBO,” Storrie said during a recent appearance on NBC’s TODAY. “That felt like a reach moment. HBO carries weight, and nothing about this industry is guaranteed.”

Olympic Symbolism, No Slap Shots Required

According to HBO Max, Williams and Storrie will carry the Olympic flame at some point during the relay’s Italian leg, though specific dates and locations have not yet been announced. The torch is currently traveling through northeastern Italy, with stops including Trieste and Udine, before continuing through 13 cities en route to Milan.

The opening ceremony for the Milano Cortina Games is scheduled for Feb. 6, though select events, including curling and skiing, begin earlier. Men’s ice hockey competition starts Feb. 11, with Team USA set to face Latvia the following day.

Latvia’s real-world hockey reputation even earned a nod within Heated Rivalry itself. In the show’s alternate take on the 2014 Sochi Olympics, Rozanov’s Team Russia suffers an upset loss to the Baltic nation, a detail that delighted hockey fans familiar with Latvia’s outsized presence in the sport.

Life After the Locker Room

The Olympic torch honor marks another milestone for Williams, 24, and Storrie, 25, whose careers have accelerated since the show’s HBO Max debut on Nov. 28. In the months that followed, the pair became frequent fixtures on red carpets, fashion events, and late-night talk shows.

Their rising profiles have mirrored the series’ cultural impact, particularly among LGBTQ+ audiences drawn to its unapologetic portrayal of queer athletes navigating hyper-masculine spaces.

The first season wrapped Dec. 26, with Crave confirming ahead of the finale that Tierney had begun early development on a second season. While plot details remain under wraps, the show’s momentum suggests that Hollander and Rozanov’s story is far from over.

This time, though, the actors portraying them will be carrying a flame instead of chasing a puck, proving that sometimes, sports romance really does stick the landing.
