As violence against transgender and gender-diverse people continues to rise worldwide, communities across the globe are preparing to observe Trans Day of Remembrance (TDOR) on Nov. 20, a solemn annual memorial honoring trans lives lost to violence, suicide and systemic neglect. This year, more than 365 names have been reported, a staggering number advocates fear represents only a fraction of the true total.
A Day Rooted in Community Grief and Resistance
TDOR was founded in 1999 following the murders of three Black transgender women in Massachusetts: Rita Hester, Chanelle Pickett and Monique Thomas. In response, trans advocates including Gwendolyn Ann Smith, Nancy Nangeroni and Jahaira DeAlto launched the “Remembering Our Dead” project and organized vigils to prevent their deaths from being erased.
What began as a local act of remembrance has since become an international day of mourning, solidarity and activism. Today, events take place globally in cities large and small. Vigils often include candle lighting, reading the names of victims, marches, art installations, worship services and community discussions focused on education and healing. Many schools, community centers, faith groups and LGBTQ+ organizations also integrate TDOR into Transgender Awareness Week programming each November.
Violence Continues to Escalate Worldwide
Despite broader awareness and increased visibility of trans lives, transgender and gender-diverse people continue to face disproportionate violence. The risk increases in regions where anti-trans rhetoric is politically, socially or religiously sanctioned. According to community reports and data collected by Remembering Our Dead, Trans Murder Monitoring, and TGEU, more than 365 trans, nonbinary and gender-diverse people have been killed or lost to suicide since TDOR 2024.
Advocates stress that the number is likely far higher. Many deaths remain unreported or are misgendered by law enforcement, media or families, limiting accurate documentation and erasing victims’ identities in the process.
TGEU reports that 68% of murders occurred in Latin America and the Caribbean, with Brazil leading for the 18th consecutive year. Globally, 90% of reported victims were trans women or transfeminine people, 88% were Black or Brown, 34% were sex workers, and 44% were killed with firearms.
The data reflects persistent inequities: non-cisgender people are over four times more likely than cisgender people to experience violent victimization, including sexual assault. Additionally, an estimated 63% of trans people report discrimination that affects work, housing, healthcare access and overall quality of life, conditions that increase exposure to violence and undermine safety.

A Call to Collective Action and Care
TDOR is not only a memorial; it is a rallying cry. Advocates emphasize that anti-trans legislation, political hostility and demonizing rhetoric fuel societal stigma and increase vulnerability to violence. These systems create conditions that push trans people into unsafe housing, unstable employment and inadequate access to medical care, heightening risk at every level.
As communities gather worldwide, TDOR remains both a moment of grief and a demand for justice. It honors loved ones lost, strengthens collective resolve and urges society to protect the dignity, safety and future of transgender and gender-diverse people everywhere.
For many, commemorating Trans Day of Remembrance is an act of resistance, a commitment to remember, uplift and fight for a world where every trans life is safe, valued and celebrated.
