While attending the Palm Springs International Film Festival Creative Impact Awards, Kristen Stewart spoke with Entertainment Tonight about making her directorial debut with The Chronology of Water.

“Everything has been kind of building to this moment… it’s what I’ve wanted to do my whole life,” Stewart said.

While reflecting on how meaningful it was to be named one of Variety’s 10 Directors to Watch, Stewart also took a moment to look back, paying homage to one of her earliest roles that’s since grown into a full-blown cult classic. But is Stewart ready to go back to Forks and direct a reboot of the Twilight saga?

“I would love — look. I love what Catherine [Hardwicke] did, I love what Chris [Weitz] did, I love what all of the directors did with the movies,” Stewart said. “They were so themselves and weird and kind of like, squirrelly, and just so present in that time when they didn’t really know what they were yet, like before they blew up.”

She said in her dream scenario that she would have a “huge budget” and support from all the fans of the franchise. “Yeah, sure, I’ll do the remake,” she added. “I’m doing it! I’m committed!”

Honestly, it’s kind of fascinating to imagine what the actor would do with a new take on the project. In an interview with Variety in 2024, Stewart gushed about how gay the film really is. “I mean, Jesus Christ, Taylor and Rob and me, and it’s so hidden and not OK. I mean, a Mormon woman wrote this book. It’s all about oppression, about wanting what’s going to destroy you. That’s a very Gothic, gay inclination that I love.”

Maybe we can get Robert Pattinson to join the team. The actor who played Edward has previously said he had his own vision for the original film—but it ultimately didn’t align with what the creative team wanted. “I wanted to make it as arty as possible,” Pattinson told GQ. “We had this strange tension where the studio was scared to make things a little bit too emo and stuff. I thought that was the only way to play it. I spent so much time [on set] infuriated… I can’t believe the way I was acting half the time.”

Bring those ideas back and let’s get into a writer’s room!

The Chronology of Water stars Imogen Poots, Thora Birch, and Jim Belushi. It follows a woman navigating childhood trauma, finding release and survival through swimming and writing.
