Disney Star Karan Brar Comes Out as Bisexual – Talks Mental Health & Growth

Karan Brar – known for his roles in Disney Channel projects like Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Jessie, and Bunk’d – came out as bisexual in an emotional essay for Teen Vogue.

The latest article strives to unite Brar’s “public and personal personas,” shedding light on mental health and grief awareness. He also shares the story of moving out at 20 and ultimately coming out to his best friends one drunken night.

In 2019, the young actor moved in with fellow Jessie star Cameron Boyce and Sophie Reynolds. Brar describes how the move affected his Indian-American family, and how the freedom impacted him.

“It all came to a head while I was drunkenly hunched over a toilet bowl, watching my tacos from lunch and several White Claws come back out,” he wrote. “I decided that was the best time to come out to Cameron and Sophie.

“The moment the words left my mouth, I regretted it. I could barely see straight, but I ended up trying to do some damage control anyway. Brar offered to move out, but his roommates would not have it. “They interrupted me by hugging me from behind. Again, I told them I should move out. They told me I was being stupid. I told them I’d cover for them if people asked why we didn’t live together anymore. They said to shut the f*ck up. I told them that they probably hated me. They said my bisexuality changed nothing for them.”

It took a while for Brar to come to terms with the idea that his sexuality did not change how his loved ones saw him.

“This was the first time in years that I wasn’t hiding anything from them; instead, they were seeing the most authentic version of me. I finally gave up and accepted that they loved me as I am, as I’ve been, and as I’m going to be. This was a crisp picture of what unconditional love looked like: my two best friends sitting across from me on a discount couch, waiting to hear me describe my type so they could take on their new roles as matchmakers. They weren’t going anywhere.”

Brar’s Journey: From Grief to Growth

Tragically, Boyce passed away that same year. Brar vividly describes the impact of losing his friend and the toll it took on his mental health.

“I refused to acknowledge how much pain I was in and isolated myself in a deeply unhealthy relationship with alcohol. Almost every night was spent getting drunk by myself in order to cope.”

Eventually, Brar faced thoughts of suicide, leading him to seek help at a treatment center.”While in treatment, I was diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Major Depressive Disorder.” Three years later, he is doing much better. “I’m finding my emotions to be much more manageable. I’m no longer drowning in the grief of losing Cameron. Rather, I’m in acceptance of grief being an ever changing experience I just have to see through.”

Bella Ramsey is Ready to Bring Lesbian Romance to ‘The Last of Us’

After a delightfully queer first season, Bella Ramsey is excited to return to The Last of Us and play out the story of Ellie and Dina in season two.

The HBO’s series, inspired by the Naughty Dog game, earned acclaim in one season. For those unfamiliar, the story follows two characters, Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey), attempting to survive in a post-apocalyptic world.

Pascal and Ramsey swiftly became the unexpected powerhouse duo, delivering both on and off the screen in a way we never knew we needed. Enthusiasm is building (ours included) for the return of the two actors to their roles, particularly with the prospect of a beautiful love story unfolding between Ellie’s character and newcomer Dina. And we are not the only ones!

“I’m really excited,” Ramsey told PinkNews. They went on to share their discovery of this role and recounted their introduction to the game, initially drawn in by its historic status as the first to feature a lesbian kiss in video game history.

The Last of Us Tells Queer Stories in Apocalyptic Drama

“It was awesome. I remember when I was researching The Last of Us, I saw that this ‘Left Behind’ story from the game, so [I was like]: ‘I really hope that’s in the show’,” they said.

Alongside the heartbreaking love story between survivors Bill and Frank, the narrative takes a nostalgic turn, delving into Ellie’s teenage romance with her friend Riley (played by Storm Reid).

“When the script came through of Riley and Ellie’s story, I was very pleased. What was cool about it as well is that it was really relevant to the story – it wasn’t just saying: ‘We’re going to make a queer episode’.

“Same with the Bill and Frank story. It was relevant and really fed into Ellie’s story and how she is now.” They continued, “It helped to piece together people’s back story. It felt justified and very beautiful.”

The 20-year-old nonbinary actor is taking Hollywood by storm. They are up for a Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series. However, their nomination has sparked controversy and reminded many about the need for non-gendered award categories.

‘Twilight’ Director Talks Her Dream Reboot Cast

Would you watch it?

Catherine Hardwicke recasts Twilight with a new generation of actors, and we have some thoughts…

In a recent interview on Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast, Catherine Hardwicke, the director behind the 2008 supernatural drama film Twilight, hinted at the possibility of recasting the iconic roles with a fresh set of actors.

As the beloved cult classic celebrates its 15th anniversary, the filmmaker took a nostalgic trip down memory lane during a rewatch of the movie.

The conversation naturally turned towards the idea of a reboot, prompting Hardwicke and Horowitz to brainstorm a dream cast for the potential reimagination. The question arose: “Is Jacob Elordi Edward Cullen today?” Hardwicke responded enthusiastically, “Oh yeah, that would be perfect.” The prospect of Jenna Ortega stepping into the role of Bella Swan was also discussed, sparking curiosity among fans about the direction a reboot might take.

Both Elordi and Ortega have been making waves in Hollywood, with Elordi actively promoting his latest films, Saltburn and Priscilla, and Ortega gaining recognition for her roles in the Scream franchise and Wednesday series, with an upcoming starring role in the Beetlejuice sequel. Their diverse talents and ability to capture the weird and fantastic essence of Twilight have ignited speculation about what a 2.0 version of the franchise could entail.

Is a Twilight Series In the Works?

Interestingly, Variety reports that a Twilight TV series is already in the works at Lionsgate. When asked about her insights into the adaptation, Hardwicke admitted she is just as clueless as anyone else. “Maybe they don’t even know,” she mused during the podcast interview, leaving fans eager for more details about the anticipated project.

As discussions around a potential Twilight reboot continue to gain traction, fans are left wondering if a new generation of stars will bring a fresh perspective to the vampire-human love story that captured the hearts of millions. Only time will tell if Edward Cullen and Bella Swan will find new life on screen, but one thing is for sure – the Twilight universe continues to captivate audiences, old and new alike.

Russell T Davies on Game-Changing Trans Character

In a clip shared by Doctor Who online, Finney described Rose as a “young, youthful queer person with so much confidence.”

“It’s the representation that I never had and a lot of younger generations are going to have, so it’s really exciting,” she continued.

Doctor Who‘s returning maestro, Russell T Davies, also spoke on why featuring a trans character in the upcoming season is a game-changer, shedding light on the crucial significance it adds to the show.

“It’s not just a Doctor Who thing for me, it’s something I and a lot of other writers are very keen to do, to be progressive and to reflect more of society.

“And it’s funny in casting Yasmin, [Rose] was a 15-year-old of mixed race there’s very few people we could have and it’s like she came down from heaven and there she was, before Heartstopper actually.

“It was just so powerfully meant to me, and I think she does the most amazing job, and it’s an absolute privilege to work with her, to get her on screen.”

“The Star Beast” is the first of three specials celebrating the 60th anniversary of the BBC show. The next episode will air on BBC One on Saturday, December 2 at 6:30 pm.

“We knew we had something special on our hands, but I think we were all flabbergasted by the reception,” Hahn said about WandaVision in a new video. The Disney+ series aired in 2021 and told the story of Wanda Maximoff and Vision as they live an idyllic suburban life in the town of Westview. However, not everything is as it appears. It Was Agatha All Along

“People were hungry for something that felt nostalgic and something that everybody could sit around and watch and wait for on Friday nights,” Hahn continued. “Friday nights! Like who stays at home on Friday nights and watches something with their family?”

Though WandaVision was a limited series, the creators at Marvel said they knew they wanted to continue the story of one of the series lead characters. “I remember Kevin saying to me, like, ‘We really should think about having an actual Agatha show,’” said head writer Jac Schaeffer. “And I was like, ‘Where do I sign for that job?”

Exclusive: Trans Football Star Jaiyah Saelua Brings ‘Fa’afafine’ Identity to ‘Next Goal Wins’

Searchlight Picture’s Next Goal Wins tells the true story of the American Samoa men’s football team as they try to recover from being named the worst team in the league.

Since the 2011 FIFA World Cup defeat, the American Samoa team has yet to net a single goal. But with the appointment of their new coach, Thomas Rongen, hopes are high for a triumphant turnaround.

This heartwarming film delves into the team members’ lives, including Jaiyah Saelua. A 2014 documentary previously captured her story, and now Taika Waititi directs its compelling retelling in a Searchlight Pictures film.

Saelua talks fa’afafine identity & trans representation in sports

Ahead of Next Goal Wins‘ release, we connected with Saelua to capture her immediate response to the movie.

“So many different emotions because I did understand that a Hollywood feature film has the power to amplify our story,” she told Gayety. “So anxiety, even just having people opening up our story to a much wider audience in the world where we could go either way, we could be criticized, joked about, or we can be celebrated, all those wonderful things. But I was prepared for the experience that this movie was going to take me on.”

Saelua’s role in the game is also a groundbreaking moment in LGBTQ+ athlete history. FIFA considers her the first out transgender woman to compete in a World Cup qualifier. The film also dives into her fa’afafine identity, which is a well-recognised third gender in Samoa. Fa’afafine means “in the way of a woman.”

Credit: Searchlight Pictures

The Truth Behind the Movie

Saelua was stunned by the pivotal role her story played in shaping the film’s overarching narrative. Though the movie is a dramatization, she said many of the experiences seen on screen are experiences she too went through. They are just being recreated by Kaimana.

“[I was] pleasantly surprised by the fact that Kaimana, who plays Jaiyah, was given one of the more lead roles and is highlighted even. And the fa’afafine identity, the sensitivities of the fa’afafine identity is highlighted and portrayed so beautifully as said by one of the coaches, fa’afafine, the Flowers of the World and things like that. Those are nice little surprises of the film that I really appreciated. And then also the harsh realities of the trans identity and trans experiences that we face.”

Saelua, now a coach and FIFA ambassador for equality and LGBTQ athletes, said she hopes this representation will help encourage equality in the sports world.

“There was such groundbreaking progress over the past few years, and then all of a sudden the conservative narrative started to get brave and aggressive and took over.

“It feels like we take one step forward to take two back. And the bad thing about that is that it becomes intergenerational. And by the time we take two steps forward or one step forward, a whole generation would’ve already felt the effects of the mistakes of the past. It just feels like an uphill climb… to just exist in spaces that are sports.”

A Love For the Sport

Saelua first played football at 11 years old in her private school and cannot imagine her life without the sport.

“We took the championship title that first year in competition. I was named the most island wide, most valuable player of the league,” she recalled. “Also at that grassroots level, it’s a mixed team. It’s a boys and girls team versus the boys and girls team. So the innocence of it, the purity of football at that level resonated with me at a young age, and I just immediately was so drawn to it. And from that point on, I just couldn’t see myself not being involved in football.

“Even up until now, after playing for the national team for more than 20 years and thinking of retiring, I already have a plan to still be involved in football.”

The 35-year-old athlete has taken courses with FIFA to continue to coach a women’s national team after she retires.

“I feel like all these sports organizations can take a look at if they just take a look at FIFA and the steps that they’re making to be more inclusive of more diverse groups of people around the world, making sure that football is more accessible, more available to different demographics, and the steps that they’re taking to make it more diverse, just simply makes it more of an appealing sport. And all the sports have the opportunity to grow in the world if they would just be more diverse.”

Next Goal Wins is now playing in theaters.

Next Goal Wins has also partnered with creative studio Accompany: The Fa’atasi Collection, which celebrates the Samoan spirit of community and the fa’afafine.

The assortment showcases exquisite pieces adorned with original artwork by fa’afafine artist Yuki Kihara. Highlight items comprise a hand-painted soccer ball and a set of athletic socks, commemorating the third gender. Shop the items here.

In the teaser, Cassandra faces impending death, whether her own or others’, with the power to change destiny. However, a perennial nemesis emerges in the form of Ezekiel Sims, played by Tahar Rahim. Despite his Spider-Man-like appearance, Sims deviates from the hero’s ethos. The synopsis hints at all four women possessing spider-like abilities, setting the stage for Sims’ relentless pursuit to eliminate them.

“Madame Web tells the standalone origin story of one of Marvel publishing’s most enigmatic heroines,” reads the synopsis. “Forced to confront revelations about her past, [Casandra] forges a relationship with three young women destined for powerful futures…if they can all survive a deadly present.”

The film also stars Emma Roberts and Adam Scott and is directed by S.J. Clarkson (Life on Mars).
