Miles Heizer is speaking candidly about the cancellation of Boots, the Netflix series he hoped would be part of his life for years to come.

In a recent interview with Gayety at the premiere of the latest project from Heizer, The People We Meet on Vacation, the actor shared his disappointment over the streamer’s decision to end the show after one season, while also expressing gratitude for the experience and the audience response it received.

“I’m devastated, to be honest,” Heizer said. “I was hoping to do that show for the rest of my life. I was planning on turning 40 on the set of Boots, but that’s not going to happen, unfortunately.”

Despite the cancellation, Heizer emphasized how meaningful the project remains to him. “I’m so grateful, truly, coming away from it with lifelong friends, and it was like the best experience of my life,” he said. “So I’m super proud of it. It’s one of the things I’ve done where I know I’ll look back and be like, ‘I’m very proud of that.’”

Boots debuted on Netflix to strong word-of-mouth, particularly among younger and queer audiences. The series centered on two vastly different worlds colliding, a contrast Heizer initially worried might limit the show’s reach. While Netflix has not publicly detailed its reasons for canceling the series, the decision surprised fans who praised the show’s originality, performances and emotional depth.

“Honestly, I was so blown away,” Heizer said. “I know on paper, the show is about two worlds that don’t typically go together. And I was sort of like, ‘I wonder if people will actually watch this. Who is this going to reach?’”

Those concerns quickly faded once the show premiered. According to Heizer, the response exceeded anything he expected. “I was so shocked and blown away by the overwhelming response to it,” he said. “It was way more than I was expecting.”

The actor, best known for his work on 13 Reasons Why and Love, Simon, has long been a familiar face to LGBTQ audiences. With Boots, he found himself once again part of a project that resonated deeply with viewers, many of whom took to social media to express their disappointment over its abrupt end.

While Netflix cancellations have become increasingly common amid shifting streaming strategies, Boots stood out for its ambition and the loyalty of its fan base. For Heizer, the show’s legacy is not defined by its short run but by the connections it created.

“Ultimately, it’s like grateful,” he said. “I’m disappointed, but I’m just grateful it happened in the first place.”

Though Boots will not continue, Heizer said the experience remains one of the highlights of his career — a project he will carry with him long after its final episode.

“It was just so incredible,” he said. “I appreciate it. It was a pleasure to be a part of.”
