Nearly two decades after she first stepped into a blonde wig and secret pop-star persona, Miley Cyrus is revisiting the role that launched her career. A newly released trailer confirms the singer and actor will return as her iconic alter ego for a special celebrating 20 years of Hannah Montana.

The anniversary program, headed to Disney+, promises a nostalgic look back at the cultural phenomenon that helped define mid-2000s pop culture, and introduced Cyrus to audiences around the world.

A Walk Down Memory Lane

The trailer opens with Cyrus stepping back into familiar territory. Wearing Hannah’s signature blonde wig, she walks through recreated sets from the original series, including the halls of Seaview High School, where fictional teen Miley Stewart balanced homework with a secret life as a chart-topping pop star.

“Already getting emotional,” Cyrus says in the preview as she revisits the spaces that shaped the show’s story.

Premiering in 2006, the sitcom followed Miley Stewart as she navigated adolescence while hiding her celebrity identity from classmates. The series ran for four seasons and quickly became one of the most recognizable franchises in the Disney Channel catalog, spawning concert tours, chart-topping albums and a theatrical film.

Alex Cooper Leads the Conversation

The special will be hosted by podcast personality Alex Cooper, known for the hit show Call Her Daddy. In the trailer, Cooper reflects on the series’ impact.

“This show defined a generation,” she tells Cyrus.

The program is structured around a long-form interview between the two, filmed in front of a live audience. According to Disney, the conversation will explore the creation of the series, Cyrus’ rise to fame and how the character still resonates with fans today.

The special will also feature previously unseen behind-the-scenes footage from the making of the series, offering viewers a glimpse at the early days of the franchise.

Family Moments Return

The preview also highlights appearances from Cyrus’ family, who were integral to the show both on and off screen.

Cyrus is seen dancing with her father, country star Billy Ray Cyrus, who played Robby Ray Stewart, Miley’s on-screen dad and manager. Another moment shows Cyrus flipping through photo albums with her mother, Tish Cyrus, reflecting on memories from the series’ production.

For longtime viewers, those appearances reinforce the show’s roots in Cyrus’ real-life family dynamic, something that contributed to its charm during its original run.

A “Love Letter” to Fans

The special arrives as Hannah Montana approaches its 20th anniversary, and Disney executives say the goal is to honor the audience that helped turn the show into a global success.

Ayo Davis, president of Disney Branded Television, described the project as a tribute to the series’ lasting influence.

“Hannah Montana opened the door for fans to dream big, sing loud and embrace every side of themselves,” Davis said in a statement announcing the project. “Partnering with Miley on this special is a dream, and we want it to be a love letter to the fans who remain passionate today.”

The show’s blend of sitcom storytelling and pop music created a blueprint Disney would later repeat with other stars. For many viewers who grew up during the 2000s, the character’s double life, regular teenager by day, superstar by night, became an enduring part of childhood nostalgia.

Cyrus Reflects on the Legacy

For Cyrus, revisiting the character carries personal meaning. The Grammy-winning artist has spent years evolving her sound and public image, but she has repeatedly acknowledged the role Hannah Montana played in shaping her career.

“Hannah Montana will always be a part of who I am,” Cyrus said in a statement about the anniversary celebration. “What started as a TV show became a shared experience that shaped my life and the lives of so many fans.”

She added that the continued affection for the series has been humbling.

“The fact that it still means so much to people all these years later is something I’m very proud of,” she said. “This ‘Hannahversary’ is my way of celebrating and thanking the fans who’ve stood by me for 20 years.”

With nostalgia culture thriving and a generation of viewers now adults, Disney is betting the return of Hannah Montana, wig and all, will strike a chord once again.

And if the trailer is any indication, Cyrus might be just as emotional about the reunion as the fans waiting to watch it.
