MISTR and its sister platform SISTR are turning October 10 into a new holiday: National PrEP Day. The first-of-its-kind campaign arrives as federal HIV prevention funds face sharp cuts and infections remain stubbornly high in the United States. The initiative has an ambitious aim, enroll 10,000 new people on PrEP in just 10 days, without costing taxpayers a dime.
Why Now
Despite medical advances, more than 100 people in the U.S. are newly diagnosed with HIV each day. PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis), a once-daily pill or biannual injection, can reduce the risk of contracting HIV by up to 99%. Yet only one in four people eligible for the medication currently take it.
Disparities are stark. Black women make up over half of new HIV cases among women, but represent just 9% of PrEP users. LGBTQ+ men of color remain disproportionately impacted as well.
“MISTR and SISTR are filling a gap,” said founder and CEO Tristan Schukraft. “We already have the science, medication and technology to end HIV. What’s missing is access and equity. National PrEP Day is about changing that.”
What to Expect
From October 1–10, MISTR will release daily social media content featuring LGBTQ+ and allied celebrities, alongside local events in high-need areas such as New York, Miami, Atlanta and San Juan.
The biggest moment will come October 9 in West Hollywood, when The Abbey hosts a “Blue Carpet Countdown” packed with drag stars, pop icons and influencers, leading into the official launch of National PrEP Day at midnight.
Free and Accessible Care
MISTR is the country’s largest telehealth provider for sexual health. Together with SISTR, the platforms cover lab work, prescriptions, consultations and discreet home delivery, all free, regardless of insurance status. Even those with insurance are encouraged to sign up, since their participation helps fund services for uninsured patients.
Beyond PrEP, both platforms also offer DoxyPEP, a new antibiotic-based prevention method against STIs like chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis. Patients can also pre-enroll for injectable PrEP, marketed as Yeztugo, which provides protection with a single shot every six months.
