Fashion’s most fearsome editor is back, and she’s not easing into retirement. The first full-length trailer for The Devil Wears Prada 2 has arrived, reuniting the film’s original power players and signaling that Runway magazine is once again the center of couture chaos.
Meryl Streep returns as Miranda Priestly, the icy editor whose influence once dictated hemlines and careers alike. Anne Hathaway reprises her role as Andy Sachs, now older, sharper, and no longer pretending she doesn’t know the difference between cerulean and cobalt. Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci are also back, completing a reunion that feels less nostalgic and more like a calculated power move.
Miranda Priestly Never Misses a Deadline
The trailer opens with Tucci’s Nigel providing voiceover gravitas as Miranda commands attention at a lavish public event, swathed in a striking red gown and surrounded by flashing cameras. His narration frames Runway not merely as a publication, but as an institution, one that pulls its former players back into orbit whether they like it or not.
The mood shifts as Madonna’s “Vogue” kicks in, signaling Andy’s return to the magazine that once chewed her up and reshaped her. She steps into the Runway offices to find a familiar mix of judgment and affection. Nigel greets her with a pointed joke, while Miranda appears genuinely unsettled by Andy’s presence, an unusual crack in her controlled exterior.
A Changed Andy, a New Battlefield
It’s soon revealed that Andy is no longer an assistant scrambling for approval. She’s now a features editor at Runway, a role that places her directly in Miranda’s line of fire once again. The reason for their reunion remains deliberately vague, but the trailer suggests that shared ambition, and shared history, may be driving the alliance.
Standing on the opposite side of the boardroom table is Emily, played by Blunt, who has built a fashion empire of her own. No longer fetching lattes or suffering through flu season, she’s positioned as a formidable rival. Their clash is teased during a tense meeting scene, capped with Emily delivering a pointed jab about Andy’s eyebrows, reminding viewers that old grudges age beautifully in designer packaging.
Returning Creators, Expanded Cast
Director David Frankel is back behind the camera, joined once again by writer Aline Brosh McKenna and producer Wendy Finerman. Their return signals continuity with the 2006 original while leaving room for a broader, more modern take on fashion media’s shifting power structures.
The sequel also expands its ensemble. New cast members include Kenneth Branagh, Simone Ashley, Justin Theroux, Lucy Liu, Caleb Hearon, Helen J. Shen, Pauline Chalamet, B.J. Novak, and Conrad Ricamora. Lady Gaga is set to appear in a smaller role, while Adrian Grenier will not return as Andy’s former boyfriend, Nate.
A Legacy Worth Revisiting
Based on Lauren Weisberger’s novel inspired by her time at Vogue, The Devil Wears Prada became a cultural touchstone, earning nearly $327 million worldwide and securing two Oscar nominations. Nearly two decades later, its sequel appears less interested in rehashing old lessons and more focused on who controls the narrative now.
The Devil Wears Prada 2 opens in theaters May 1 via 20th Century Studios.
