Okay, who gave Heartstopper Forever permission to emotionally destroy us like this?
Netflix has officially released the first trailer for Heartstopper Forever, the feature-length finale that will bring one of television’s most beloved queer coming-of-age stories to a close, premiering globally on July 17, 2026.
And yes, we’re already crying.
The final chapter picks up with Nick Nelson (Kit Connor) and Charlie Spring (Joe Locke) entering a new phase of their relationship, one that’s arguably scarier than any exam, rugby match, or school dance they’ve faced before: growing up.
Nick is getting ready to head off to university while Charlie is finding his own independence back at school. Suddenly, they’re confronting a very real possibility that every young couple eventually has to navigate: what happens when life starts pulling you in different directions?
According to the official synopsis, the reality of a long-distance relationship begins to weigh on them as doubts creep in and their relationship faces its biggest challenge yet.
And the trailer wastes absolutely no time making that clear.
One particularly emotional moment sees Charlie explain, “Nick always thinks about the future. It’s like he’s there in his mind already trying to stop a mistake that hasn’t happened yet. I never used to think about the future at all.”
“That’s because you were too busy surviving.”
Yeah. That one hit us directly in the chest.
It’s Bigger Than a Love Story
If Heartstopper has taught us anything over the years, it’s that this series has never only been about romance.
Sure, Nick and Charlie are at the center of it all, but Heartstopper Forever looks like it’s asking a bigger question: who are you outside of your first love?
At one point, Nick vulnerably asks, “Who even am I if you don’t need me anymore?”
And Charlie offers what may end up being one of the defining lines of the entire film:
“I need you to be okay without me.”
Excuse us while we stare at a wall for a few minutes.
Because honestly? That’s such a beautiful and terrifying part of growing up. Learning that loving someone doesn’t mean holding onto them so tightly that neither of you can grow.
The trailer also leans heavily into the friendships that have always made Heartstopper feel so special. After all, this has never been a story about one couple. It’s about an entire group of people finding each other at exactly the right moment in their lives.
And thankfully, amidst all the anxiety and tears, the trailer also gives us one final reminder of what this story has always been about.
“It’s not as sad as you think. All of us, whether we’re together or not, the love that connects us all will never break. We built it, and it built us.”
Yeah… okay. We are absolutely unwell.
Olivia Rodrigo Is Here to Twist the Knife Even Further
As if the emotional damage wasn’t enough, the entire trailer is soundtracked by “Stupid Song,” marking the first-ever use of a track from Olivia Rodrigo’s upcoming album, You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love.
And honestly? It’s perfect.
There’s something about Olivia Rodrigo and teenage yearning that just makes sense. Pairing her music with Nick and Charlie navigating first love, growing pains, and uncertain futures feels almost too powerful.
By the time the trailer reaches its final moments, we’re fully in our feelings.
“We look after each other, don’t we?”
“Always.”
Created and written by Alice Oseman and directed by Wash Westmoreland, Heartstopper Forever stars Kit Connor, Joe Locke, William Gao, Yasmin Finney, Corinna Brown, Kizzy Edgell, Tobie Donovan, Jenny Walser, Rhea Norwood, and Leila Khan.
Produced by See-Saw Films, the finale arrives on Netflix July 17.
And if this trailer taught us anything, it’s this: maybe Heartstopper was never actually trying to answer whether first love lasts forever.
It was trying to show us that the people who help build us stay with us forever.
