Two drag performers say they were assaulted while filming a promotional video on a late-night shoot in Cork. The incident has been described by the pair as an unprovoked homophobic attack.
What Happened
Drag artists Lucina Schynning and Krystal Queer were shooting a playful video on a public street when a man approached from behind and struck one of them, according to their social media post. When the performers confronted the initial assailant, others intervened and joined the attack.
The duo shared a recording of the incident on Instagram Monday, Oct. 27, and urged anyone with information or additional footage to come forward.
Victims Speak Out
In their post, Schynning and Queer called the incident “two unprovoked homophobic attacks.” They had been creating content to promote an upcoming live event when violence interrupted their plans.
Two days later, in a follow-up video, they said police have identified all the individuals involved and that reports have been filed with Gardaí Síochána. They thanked supporters for messages of solidarity and promised to respond to each one.
Police Response
A spokesperson for Ireland’s national police force confirmed they responded to a report of assault at about 12:30 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 26. A man in his 20s sustained injuries that were “non-life-threatening,” the spokesperson said. The case has been assigned to a Garda Diversity Officer, and investigations remain ongoing.
Aftermath & Moving Forward
Despite the attack, Schynning and Krystal Queer say they will proceed with their upcoming event. In their follow-up post they affirmed their intention to continue protesting hate by refusing to cancel their show.
The incident has raised alarm among LGBTQ+ communities in Ireland and underscored concerns about public safety for queer performers in everyday settings.
Authorities have appealed for witnesses or anyone with video evidence to share what they saw. The Garda Diversity Office is overseeing the case as it develops.
