Toronto got a serious dose of Spanish star power last night. Directors Javier Ambrossi and Javier Calvo, the creative duo affectionately known as Los Javis, walked the red carpet at the Toronto International Film Festival for the Canadian premiere of La Bola Negra. Joining them was an enviable lineup of talent, including Carlos González, Guitarricadelafuente, Miguel Bernardeau, Milo Quifes, and Oscar winner Penélope Cruz.
The film, known in English as The Black Ball, arrives in North America carrying major momentum from its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in May. Ambrossi and Calvo took home the Best Director prize at Cannes, sparking a competitive bidding war that ended with Netflix nabbing U.S. distribution rights.
González leads the contemporary storyline, while musician-turned-actor Guitarricadelafuente and Quifes anchor the historical chapters. The narrative bridges three gay men across distinct eras: 1932, 1937, and 2017. Their lives connect across generations through shared experiences of desire, pain, and romance against the backdrop of the Spanish Civil War and modern times.
The production boasts a massive team effort behind the camera. Movistar Plus+ produced the original film alongside Suma Content Films, Telefónica Audiovisual Digital, and Los Esquiadores AIE. Co-producers include Pedro Almodóvar’s El Deseo and Le Pacte, with backing from Atresmedia and CREA SGR. World sales are being handled by Goodfellas.
Inspiration From A Spanish Literary Legend
The title La Bola Negra draws directly from an unfinished play by celebrated Spanish poet Federico García Lorca, who was assassinated in 1936. The script also borrows elements from Alberto Conejero’s stage play La Piedra Oscura (The Dark Stone). Conejero co-wrote the screenplay alongside Los Javis, with actor Alberto Cortés stepping into the role of Lorca on screen.
Speaking about their vision for the project, Calvo and Ambrossi previously shared what drove them to tackle the historical narrative:
“When we began writing La Bola Negra, we wanted to tell a story about freedom, legacy, and the importance of LGBTQ+ visibility,” Calvo and Ambrossi said. “Above all, we wanted to honor the generations of people whose courage and sacrifice made our freedoms possible today.”
Star-Studded Ensemble And Original Soundtrack
Beyond its central trio, the film features an eclectic international cast. Élite star Miguel Bernardeau plays Rafael Rodríguez Rapún, alongside comedian and filmmaker Julio Torres as Juan Pablo. Screen icons Lola Dueñas, Penélope Cruz, and Glenn Close complete the high-profile ensemble.
Music plays an equally crucial role in building the film’s mood. Spanish musical sensation Guitarricadelafuente makes his feature acting debut as Sebastián and contributed the original song “La Nieve” to the soundtrack. Renowned composer Raül Refree crafted the rest of the score, matching the story’s historical scale.
Following its festival run, La Bola Negra will open in select theaters on October 16, 2026, before heading to streaming.
