The gay royal love story that broke the internet is getting its happily-ever-after. Amazon MGM Studios just confirmed that Red, White & Royal Blue is getting its sequel, perfectly titled Red, White & Royal Wedding.
Nicholas Galitzine and Taylor Zakhar Perez are officially back as Prince Henry and First Son Alex Claremont-Diaz. Do you think they’ll eat the cake at this wedding or fall into it again?
A Queer Royal Comeback
According to Variety, Jamie Babbit, the iconic director behind But I’m a Cheerleader, is taking the helm for the sequel. The script comes from Gemma Burgess, Red, White & Royal Blue director Matthew López, and author Casey McQuiston, who will also executive produce.
Berlanti Schechter Films’ Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter are returning to produce alongside Michael McGrath, López, and Sullivan Street Productions’ Jennifer Salke. Basically, the dream team is back.
Why Fans Are Freaking Out
Julie Rapaport, Head of Film at Amazon MGM Studios, summed it up best: “After seeing the incredible outpouring of love for Red, White & Royal Blue, it’s clear Alex and Henry’s story truly resonated with audiences. We couldn’t be more excited to continue that journey with Jamie Babbit at the helm.”
Berlanti and Schechter added that Babbit’s “decades of championing queer stories” make her the perfect fit, while López said he’s thrilled to “pass the directing baton” to her.
And in what feels like a full-circle moment, Babbit herself shared: “After directing But I’m a Cheerleader in my 20s, I’m thrilled to be back in the queer love universe of Red, White & Royal Wedding. We all need this kind of optimism, fantasy, and gay joy.”
The Story Continues
Based on Casey McQuiston’s beloved novel, the first film followed Alex, the First Son of the U.S., and his enemies-to-lovers romance with Prince Henry of England. The new film promises to pick up after their whirlwind romance, and if the title’s any indication, we might finally get the royal wedding we’ve been dreaming of.
Time to make some more history!
