Ten-time Grammy winner Billie Eilish is reportedly in talks to make her feature acting debut in a new film adaptation of Sylvia Plath’s iconic 1963 novel The Bell Jar. According to Deadline, the project is being developed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Sarah Polley, who will write and direct the film.
A Dark Literary Classic Gets a New Life
The Bell Jar is the only novel written by poet and author Sylvia Plath, and it remains one of the most influential works exploring mental health, identity, and societal expectations.
The story follows Esther Greenwood, a college student who lands a prestigious internship at a magazine but begins struggling with intense pressure, isolation, and depression as she tries to figure out who she is and what her future should look like.
If the deal goes through, Eilish would take on the lead role of Esther.
The film is being produced by Joy Gorman Wettels through her company Joy Coalition alongside Plan B Entertainment and StudioCanal. Focus Features has reportedly landed the project and will distribute the film in the United States.
Billie Eilish’s First Major Film Role
It’s no secret Eilish has been dominating the charts recently. Her most recent album, Hit Me Hard and Soft (2024), produced Grammy-winning hits like “Birds of a Feather” and “Wildflower.”
And while Eilish is primarily known for her music career, she has already dipped her toes into film.
She won two Academy Awards for Best Original Song: first for “No Time to Die” from the 2021 James Bond film and again for “What Was I Made For?” from the 2023 blockbuster Barbie. The latter helped cement her place as one of the most successful young artists working in Hollywood today.
She also appeared in the Prime Video thriller series Swarm and hosted an episode of Saturday Night Live in 2021. But The Bell Jar would mark her first leading role in a feature film.
Why This Role Feels Like a Perfect Fit
Eilish’s music often explores themes of anxiety, vulnerability, and identity — emotional territory that overlaps heavily with the themes at the heart of The Bell Jar.
That connection is part of why the casting has already sparked so much excitement online. Many fans see Eilish’s haunting artistic style as a natural match for the introspective tone of Plath’s novel.
And for audiences who have long connected with the book’s themes of feeling out of place in the world, the project has the potential to resonate deeply with a new generation.
For now, the project remains in development. But if this collaboration comes together, Billie Eilish might soon be stepping into one of literature’s most complex and unforgettable roles.
