Sabrina Carpenter is trading “Nonsense” for a trip down the rabbit hole. The pop powerhouse is set to star in and produce a new Alice in Wonderland movie musical at Universal Pictures, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The film will be written and directed by Lorene Scafaria, best known for Hustlers, while musical film heavyweight Marc Platt will produce alongside Leslie Morgenstein and Elysa Koplovitz Dutton of Alloy Entertainment.
Carpenter’s Vision Comes to Life
While details remain under wraps, the project stems from Carpenter’s own pitch. The singer reportedly approached Universal over a year ago with a vision and lookbook for a modern musical spin on Lewis Carroll’s beloved tale. This new version will draw from Carroll’s original text rather than the 1951 Disney classic or Tim Burton’s 2010 live-action take.
Carroll’s story follows Alice, a curious girl who tumbles into a fantastical world where logic gets flipped on its head. Carpenter’s enthusiasm for the project suggests a reimagined take that balances whimsy with a pop-forward sensibility, something the artist has mastered in her music career.
A New Role Behind the Scenes
This marks one of Carpenter’s first ventures as a producer, signaling her growing influence in Hollywood. Known for her sharp comedic timing and stage presence, the singer-actress is no stranger to storytelling. She made her Broadway debut as Cady Heron in Mean Girls before the pandemic halted its run.
In film and television, she’s appeared in The Hate U Give, Emergency, and Girl Meets World. Now, she’s taking control of the narrative, on screen and off.
The Team Behind the Curtain
Director Lorene Scafaria brings a strong mix of style and substance to the project. Her 2019 hit Hustlers earned critical acclaim and several award nominations. Scafaria has also directed episodes of Succession and I Love LA, showcasing her versatility across genres.
Platt’s involvement ensures musical pedigree. The veteran producer’s credits span from Legally Blonde to La La Land.
Carpenter’s Golden Era
Carpenter’s film news follows a massive year in music. The star recently earned six Grammy nominations, including Album of the Year and Best Pop Vocal Album for Man’s Best Friend, plus Song and Record of the Year nods for “Manchild.”
With her chart dominance and growing Hollywood clout, Carpenter seems ready to make Wonderland her stage.
