Vevo is rolling out a new original content series called Artist Portrait, designed to capture artists in settings that feel personal and alive. The franchise mixes interviews with live performances filmed in meaningful locations, offering fans a more unfiltered look at their favorite musicians.
The series opens with none other than Conan Gray, who brings his signature mix of vulnerability and storytelling to two performances set to release throughout October. The project will culminate in a short film weaving together both songs and narrative moments.
Conan’s Creative Connection with Vevo
This isn’t Gray’s first time collaborating with Vevo. His partnership with the music platform dates back to 2020, when he was featured in DSCVR Artists to Watch. Since then, he’s performed for multiple Live from Vevo Studios sessions and even appeared in Vevo Footnotes earlier this year.
Now, with Artist Portrait, Gray returns not as an emerging artist but as a fully formed storyteller ready to bring fans into his creative process.
Intimate Performance, Big Impact
Gray’s first Artist Portrait performance of “Actor” takes place in a cozy, wood-paneled space that highlights the warmth and closeness of the setting. Seated cross-legged on a bed, guitar in hand, he performs surrounded by his band as natural light filters in. The song, about a lover pretending their relationship never existed, feels raw and immediate, letting fans connect deeply with the heartbreak and longing woven into his lyrics.
The setting mirrors the themes of Wishbone, Gray’s sophomore album, which explores identity, love, and the vulnerability of sharing your story with the world.
A Fresh Take on Music Storytelling
Vevo’s Senior Vice President of Content, Programming & Marketing, JP Evangelista, said the new series builds on the success of Vevo’s Extended Play short films. “With Artist Portrait, we bring the set to the artist, wherever they are,” Evangelista said. “It’s about showing fans their favorite musicians in environments that mean something to them.”
Executive Producer Chris Pereira echoed the sentiment, describing the series as “a window into an artist’s current creative state.” For Gray, that means letting fans see the quieter moments between stages, where the music, and the person behind it, truly come alive.
